Diablo Cody signs on to pen "Sweet Valley High" movieWhen I was too
Hubba and hubba. Now, much like all good things from my childhood, Sweet Valley High is being made into a movie. What makes this special news fit for someone way too
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Cody's formative years were informed by the books, which centered on the lives of two teenage girls, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, who lived in the fictional town of Sweet Valley, Calif. Jessica was the more conniving and materialistic of the sisters, and usually needed help from the more practical Elizabeth when her schemes went awry.”
With Cody’s name attached, I can only assume this will be filled with pop-culture kitsch, an entire new list of verbiage to add to the urban dictionary and, with any luck, some super smokin’ hot twin eye candy. Hmm, maybe Sweet Valley can take place in Australia and Elizabeth and Jessica can be played by Lisa and Jess Origliasso of The Veronicas. Schwing!
I’m having issues thinking of any other hot twin sisters who could play the Wakefields. Before you even think about saying, “What about the Olsen twins?” save your breath because I am not the slightest bit interested.
Is it weird that I’m kind of excited for this to go into production? Perhaps I’m jumping the gun a bit, but I can’t help feeling as though this might just pick up where Popular left off. (Early Tammy Lynn Michaels anyone?) Please tell me I’m not the only one. Submitted by on September 24, 2009 - 11:00am. |

ha!
I'm one of the many, many girls who read sweet valley as a teenager. I think I outgrew them at the embarassingly old age of 14 or 15, though I do remember some rather adult content in some of the SVU books. And I cannot believe I just typed out "SVU".
I just have one thing about twins. Why do twins always do that whole touchy thing with each other? The Origliasso twins have always freaked me out because of that, as have the Olsen twins. Stop it! It's no wonder people feel either turned on, or grossed out about lesbian twins (um, cf the Ikki twins). I would never, ever touch my sister that way, it's way too disgusting. Take a leaf from Tegan and Sara Quin, who talk publicly about not wanting to stand too close to each other.
Going back to Sweet Valley, I would kind of like to see it (who didn't have a crush on Elizabeth?) but if it ever did come out here, I probably wouldn't, out of sheer embarassment. And this coming from a person who went to watch HSM3 on her own in the middle of the day.
I realize they never would
I realize they never would because they are too busy with fashion... but I will watch and support anything Mary Kate Olsen does as I think she is a goddess. Albeit and drugged up one ;)
SO glad that they picked Diablo to write this. I cant wait for all the new slang, and to see who plays Elizabeth!

oh my god, i loved sweet valley high. i think i read every book Francine Pascal had written by the age of 12. And i might have been mildly obsessed with the show, too. The daniels sisters were gorgeous (though at the time i think i was more enamored with the Todd character), and i recall writing the kid who played Winston some fan mail back in 3rd grade (i figured that as the nerdy character, he'd be most likely to respond, and he did!! super nice guy.). Oh and those totally adult college and alternative universe / horror novels in the series? fantastic. especially as an impressionable 5th grader.
not sure i like the idea of Diablo Cody tackling this, but maybe it'll turn into something fantastic. and i for one actually wouldnt mind seeing the Olsen twins on the big screen again (it takes two! billboard dad! siggghhh).
oh and as a twin myself - i dont think it's freaky that twins are all touchy and close. we shared a womb, for god's sake. it's just family.

Yuck!
...is Hollywood really this desperate?!? I like Diablo but i wouldn't pay to see this...
By the way, why have we not had a blog post about the box office disaster that is Jennifer's Body...and hows-about that sexy ass kiss between the two leads?!?!? Step your game up, AE!
"Close your legs, bitch; i can see your Spanx!"
I just wanna know who's playing the brunette friends!
Not a huge fan of blondes.
I didn't read the books, but I played the board game and I was always "Lily" I think that was her name- she was the sultry bitch of the crew - who I aspired to be at 10 (and now....)
Perhaps straight-laced Elizabeth and sultry bitch, "Lily" could have a secret Sweet Valley affair. It would be so much more interesting than shopping at the mall.
