"10 Things I Hate About You" promises hot "girl-on-girl action"

There were so many things to love about the 1999 movie 10 Things I Hate About You. In the same way Amy Heckerling turned Jane Austen's Emma into the masterpiece that is Clueless, Karen Lutz and Kirsten Smith turned Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew into 10 Things.

To start with, Julia Stiles is a babe. I'm sad to not have seen her in anything good lately, but at least I have fond memories of her pouty-face wearing overalls.

Then we had Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt working side by side to ultimately win the affections of the Stratford sisters. Heath was and Joseph still is worthy of my lesbian attraction.

I can't say it was a surprise to hear that this movie was being made into a TV show — most things are being reduced, reused and recycled these days. I will be surprised if this ends up being any good.

The folks over at E! seem overly-amped about the upcoming ABC Family program and had this to say:

Jen here: I don't want to speak for my compatriots, but the Valley girl in me must say this: OMG, you guys, it's so awesome. 10 Thing I Hate About You the TV show is hella funny (thanks to the likes of original movie castmember Larry Miller, who played/plays the dad), the show runner talks openly about being inspired by teen TV greats Buffy the Vampire Slayer and My So-Called Life, and Ethan Peck (who plays Patrick Verona, the Heath Ledger part) is at the beginning of a superstar arc that will knock us all back like we were hit with the blast wave of an asteroid hitting Earth.

Watch this show so you can say you knew him when. Meanwhile, check out the promo music video now (because "I Want You to Want Me" is never not good tunes) and then swing back here after the July 7 premiere for more scoop on the season-one kisses, including some hot girl-on-girl action.

Yes, they said "hot girl-on-girl action." When that's touted in advance, it rarely turns out well.

This of course prompted me to think of the 2 Things I Hate and 2 Things I Like about The Idea of The "10 Things I Hate About You" TV Show.

Hate: How long can the dynamic of the characters really last as a television show? The movie worked because it doesn't take too long for Patrick and Kat to get together. How many seasons of the TV show will it take for their eventual coupling to take place?

Hate: OK, so the most obviously annoying part of E!'s description comes from the "hot girl-on-girl action" comment. Somehow I'm not too confident in ABC Family giving us some real "hot" anything, much less a hot lesbian scene. I’m very curious to see how they play this out. Will there actually be a gal pal storyline that is treated with respect? Or (more likely the case) will there be a flexo-sexual storyline or (almost worse) the stereotypically written aggressive, angsty lesbian character?

Like: Lary Miller reprising his role as Kat and Bianca’s dad. You may not know the name but Larry Miller is always funny. He's one of the recurring characters in all of Christopher Guest's movies (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show (and more, but those are really the only two you need to watch).

Like: Lindsey Shaw as lead shrew, Kat Stratford. Hot stuff alert! Sure, I just looked up her age on IMDB to make sure I'm not a perv and it turns out I am totally a perv, but I'm ok with it. She's got the look and the attitude to take over where Julia Stiles left off.

So, let's be honest here, I'm not going to be watching this show; I'm not even sure if I have the ABC Family channel. I have young siblings though, and I’d like to think they will be given a show with some characters that will do both the original story, and their older gay sister some justice.

What do you think? Will you be watching this show when it premieres in July?

    Maybe

I'll probably watch and see if I like it or not

    10 Things>>

I won't be watching (I still haven't even seen the movie but I did read' Taming...' years ago in high school).

I just wanted to say that 'Waiting for Guffman' and 'Best in Show' are NOT the only Christopher Guest movies you need to see: 'A Mighty Wind' was freakin' hilarious and brilliant! Jane's Lynch's segment on WINC alone is worth it!

    Lame!

I hate the trend of re-using everything because nothing is ever as good as the original (except for Joan Jett's cover of "I Love Rock and Roll").

Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger totally made that movie. The tv show will pale in comparison.

    I agree

i think they are doing this because Heath Ledger died, but surley fans of Heath Ledger will hate this anyway? I know i do!

The whole 'Lesbian Action' thing made me lol, i hate to say it but ABC are only putting that in to get more views.

    ughhh!!

The movie came out when I was in fifth grade. I wanted to be Kat Stratford!!!  I don't think ABC family is capable of making anything close to what the movie was.
    EggFace's picture

    eeeehh

I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to watch it. I love the movie, and I don't think my brain could take a 10 Things I Hate About You with no Julia Stiles or Heath Ledger. Seriously, I could not decide which of them I was crushing on harder, and although I crack up every time Larry Miller opens his mouth or even pulls a face... I just don't think I can do it.

I soooo agree.  I can't watch this show.  I love love loved the movie and can't comprehend this without Health & Julia and being able to crush on both!! :)

Hate:  Ethan Peck.  Seriously?  This dweeb is going to try to fill Heath Ledger's shoes?  I don't think so.

That "dweeb" is actually quite charming, and you could at least give him a chance before you write him off.  He does have Gregory Peck's genes afterall ; )

Ahh, If ABC Family does decide to deliever on their promise of "girl-on-girl action" I really hope Lindsey is involved! She is hot and as an added bonus, from my city! Yay for Lincoln!! (Practically the only good thing about it.)

    Big shoes to fill...

10 things came out during my first year of uni, and it's tied with Mean Girls in my view for the title of best teen comedy ever made. It was just perfect, Julia Stiles is hwat! Heath Ledger was gorgeous and Joey Gordon-Levitt has always been a cutey pie (and a great actor to boot)...even Alison Janney as the porn-writing headmistress!!! The jokes were great and still make me laugh when I re-watch it on dvd...

Obviously a winning formula...but can it be re-used? And I'm not so confident with a channel called 'ABC Family' giving us hot girl on girl action...I'm not in the US so I don't know what kind of stuff they usually play...not that hot girl on girl action is the key to a sucessful show (it just helps!)

Oh noes! It's the bird from 'Neds Declassified School Survival Guide'! LOL

I used to love watching that show a year or so back. And I would think to myself, 'dang she is gonna be hot when she grows up'

But hey! She's 20 now. Free game! :D

Ha, she was great in that show, and a really sweet lil actress. I hope this is the start of big things for her.

I wonder if this is why they've started showing Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide again on Nickelodeon...

    If my friend's little sister

has ANY "hot scene" in this show, I think I'll barf. She's always going to be my friend's little sister, and that makes me feel weird.

P.S. - She plays the younger sister.

but i'm kind of offended that they are remaking a film that's not even 20 years old. It's a freaking classic teen movie and THEY ARE REMAKING IT. WHAT? NO.

    I don't like it...

    I don't think this show

I don't think this show will be very good.  No one can fill Heath Ledger's shoes in that part.  However, I will watch because Lindsey Shaw is extremely cute.  I somehow got sucked into watching ned's declassified because she was in it :P.  (P.S. I'm not a creeper she's two years older than me)

I love the movie so much which makes me really scared this will be a distaster, but I don't know if I can just ignore it lol. Knowing me, I think I'll have to at least check it out once to see what it's like.

    Just can't

I just can't watch this.  The movie was far too incredible for me to consider viewing this, for fear of it just killing the wonder that is 10 Things.  Plus I mean no Julia Stiles?  And these girls are jailbait so it's a little pervy for me to ogle them.

In the fifth picture the lead looks like the lead from the once Canadian TV series, featuring lesbian lead actress, Alienated. That casting would have been the only thing that could have got me to tune into this show. Hopefully it's as good as the movie. My little cousins need something positive to watch on TV.

    hot lesbian action?

By that, when it comes from the lips of an associate of ABC Family, key word being Family, I would first assume that "hot lesbian action" would mean some lead character or even friend of a female character hooking up with another girl after drinking then denying it or apologizing for it the next day using drunkenness as an excuse, as always.

Idk how i feel about the show. They're trying to recreate a classic. We shall see, I suppose.

    jt4702's picture

    Not really

More than likely no. I have yet to see a successful remake of a movie into a tv show. Take for example Ferris Bueller's (sp) day off. I love that movie. They tried to make it into a sitcom, and it flopped big time. Same with My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Love the movie, show flopped big time as well. As for 10 things, I love that movie as well. I just can't see it turned into a tv show successfully. We all know what the outcome will be, and trying to stretch that out for who knows how many seasons... well. As for the hot girl-on-girl action? Please. How many years did it take ABC to even have a credible relationship for Bianca on AMC? And this will be aired on ABC Family? It will probably be soemthing like an experiment on someone's part and she will realize her moment of "confusion" and end up in the arms of the nearest jock or something like that.

    WILL WATCH!

Yep, I'll definitely be watching, if only b/c I'm a sucker for high school comedies...but this is one of my favorite movies, so that also is pulling me in.

As for girl on girl action, didn't anyone see Greek this past season? Greek is a great example of a show on ABC Family that has gay characters with depth and pretty awesome storylines. So I wouldn't dismiss it just because this is on ABCF.

    Anyhoo, can't wait for July 7! :)

    Will watch it, but...

I'm not TOO excited about this because I love the original and I'm afraid this will kinda ruin it.

I'll still watch it though. Mostly because of Meaghan Jette Martin, the blonde that will play Bianca. I kinda disliked the character in the original but I <3 Meaghan. Yes, I'm a 21 year old that likes the Disney Channel. Sue me! lol

Can't wait to see her in it. :)

    One Reason

And one reason alone for me watching this, Lindsey Shaw. End of story. I loved her as Moze in Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, and she's wicked as Kat.

If only she didn't get together with the guy in the end...He seems like a bit of a deck.
