WTA stands behind Hingis — tentatively

In an update of the Martina Hingis testing-positive-for-cocaine-then-retiring story, the World Tennis Association is standing by its star this week.

Guardedly.

Last week, it was revealed that Hingis came up positive for cocaine in a test conducted last summer at Wimbledon. She followed up that disclosure by calling a press conference and tearfully announcing her retirement from pro tennis. She stated that since fighting the charges would totally consume her life, she decided instead to retire, despite declaring her innocence.

On Sunday, WTA Tour president Stacy Allaster was at the Sony Ericsson Championships, and expressed support for Hingis:

“I personally haven’t seen her, but she’s part of our tennis family, and I’m glad she joined us here,” Allaster said, noting Hingis’ surprise appearance at the event, which she won twice in her career. “Martina was a great champion, a very accomplished athlete. Our sport has been very fortunate to have Ms. Hingis.”

Allaster also stated, however, that the women’s tour would only get involved after doping authorities issue a report on the matter.

“We’ll let that process happen independently, and then, depending on the findings of the tennis anti-doping committee, we’ll be there to support Martina.”

Talk about driving on both sides of the street.

Meanwhile, Justin Henin won the tournament, downing Maria Sharapova 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, in what was the longest three-set final in tourney history. It was Henin’s 10th title of the year and earned her another $1 million, as she became the first woman to pass $5 million in a year’s earnings.

The victory was also Henin’s 25th straight. After losing in the Wimbledon semifinals to Marion Bartoli, she closed the season by winning her last 25 matches. Henin is, ironically, the first player since Hingis to record double-digit victories in a season. Hingis achieved the feat back in 1997.

The Henin-Sharapova championship match took 3 hours and 24 minutes to complete. It was also an impressive performance for Sharapova, who competed in the tournament after a nearly two-month layoff due to a shoulder injury.

    all my support

to Ms. Hingis. She's a living part of the history of tennis. Im not trying to exonerate nor justify her for supposedly taking drugs, if she really did that. The only thing i want to say is that i'll always remember when she first appeared on professional tennis and marvelled everyone and everybody in the 90s with her flawless tennis. That's the Martina i want to remember.

    one never knows

very weird, seems out of character, but if true, extremely sad.

    I agree

There was no one before her with her game and there hasn't been anyone since. I remember watching her in my early teens and to see her win and win and win and win every match and tournament she played was so amazing. Haven't we all got that one person who we idolized in our teens, the one who could do no wrong? Well, that's Martina for me (even though she did do wrong).

Now, if someone writes something and posts a pic. of a 16 year old Martina, bawling her eyes out after losing the French Open final to Steffi Graff, I just may have to start crying too. Worst. Tennis. Moment. Ever.

    Chain of custody

The good news for Hingis is the fact that Wimbledon (as of a few weeks ago) still wasn't able to give evidence of chain of custody. I mean, her B sample came up positive for cocaine, too, but still, no evidence of perfect chain of custody? She still has a chance...

Well good. However, WTA stands for: women's tennis association not world tennis association.

I wish the season ending championships would go back to b/5.

    Nooo...

God, i can't believe she's talking about retiring... She's been such an entertaining figure as i was growing up.

I remember talking to my brother about female tennis and he'd ask "who won?", i'd just snort and say "the usual." She was just unbeatable, it wasn't even funny. She'd throw that ball to impossible places around the court, i'd just sit on my couch laughing.

And her screams and moans as she was getting tired or frustrated made the game a lot more interesting. No, i never lusted after her, she was just entertaining to watch.

The most memorable tennis match of her for me, was the one she played with Steffi Graf, i think it was Steffi's very last game of her career. And Steffi won. It was so incredible that i still have it on a vcr tape. It was just like a movie, it had drama, comedy, action... And that crowd backing up Steffi... Hingis couldn't handle it, she became such a mess that she left the court crying on her mother's shoulder. Crying uncontrolably. Wow.

Personally i think she was so spoiled that losing wasnt what hurt her the most, it was that crowd against her. Booing her, cheering Steffi.

Please don't retired Hingis!!! : \ I still want to see more of your drama on the tennis court!

EDIT: Christ... The one time i don't read the previous posts... I just noticed IfOnly mentioned that Hingis/Steffi match. I won't post a picture but i've gotta tell you "worst moment" for some "best moment" for others. :P

Hmm... Sorry about the long post, i'm used to forums, not comments pages. Think i got carried away.

    I've despised Martina Hingis

ever since her comments about Amelie Mauresmo being "half a man."

Martina Hingis, on the other hand, might well be half a human, but she's all mad bitch.

She does, however, get my total support for a kick up her crazy arse.
