More "Serenity" for Whedon?

After learning of the Sci Fi Channel's Firefly marathon yesterday, I decided I could think of no better way to spend a Friday than by reminding myself how much I like Joss Whedon and the characters he creates.

So I spent the day reacquainting myself with Firefly. The only wrench in this system came when all the episodes had aiered. I was left wanting more. I simply cannot get enough of quirky mechanic Kaylee, cool-as-ice-but-vulnerable consort Inara, weird and wacky River, or tough-as-nails and second-in-command Zoe. And, yeah, the boys aren't bad either.

What I want, ultimately, is a sequel to Serenity, Whedon's big-screen wrap-up to the TV series. Seems Mr. Whedon is not against the idea. Talk of a sequel has been ongoing since the movie was released. And while such talk has cooled, it's never really disappeared entirely. We sci-fi fans don't tend to let go easily. With the new and improved DVD edition scheduled for release in the not-too-distant future, the sequel talk has resurfaced. Comments made by Joss in the newest round of chatter indicate that getting all of his actors back together for such a sequel might prove difficult, based on their current workload. Now, I consider myself a TV-phile, but I can't recall seeing his troops in any starring roles lately. So I decided to check in to see what they've all been up to.

Let's start with the leader of the pack, Capatin Malcolm Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion. Since the 2005 release of Serenity, Fillion has made a guest appearance on Desperate Housewives and had one of the leads in the canceled TV series Drive. He's also starred in some movies I've never heard of, most notably White Noise 2: The Light, which also boasted Katee Sackhoff and Teryl Rothery of Battlestar Galactica and Stargate: SG-1, respectively. So, Fillion is clearly working, but I'd wager he could be pulled away for more Serenity.

What about Adam Baldwin, who played Serenity's muscleman, Jayne Cobb? He's been a bit busier, with a guest spot on Bones and a regular spot on Taye Diggs' canceled series Day Break. He's also completed filming on a new Mathew Modine flick, Little Fish, Strange Pond, which is slated for a 2008 release. He provided the voice for Superman in the new animated Superman: Doomsday, which is slated for release in September. (Anne Heche provided the voice of Lois Lane, and James Marsters gave voice to Lex Luther.) Plus, Baldwin started filming a new project called Gospel Hill in June of this year. That film also includes Julia Stiles, Danny Glover and Angela Basset. All right: It might take a bit more persuading to get Baldwin on board.

Sean Maher played the protective older brother and doctor, Simon Tam. He looks to have some time on his hands. Other than a guest appearance on Ghost Whisperer and a TV movie called Wedding Wars, he's been surprisingly absent. I'm going to guess he would be willing to fill Simon's shoes again.

The secretive Shepherd Book, as portrayed by Ron Glass, gets the next look. And the answer here? He's free. Unless he's doing a ton of work on the stage rather than in film, which is entirely possible, he's been awfully quiet since Serenity. He had a guest spot on Shark as a judge, but that's about it.

I know. Those of you who have seen the movie are squirming right now. Wash met an unfortunate and untimely end in the flick, but we all know how well Joss brings people back from the dead. But Alan Tudyk, who played Wash, has been a bit busy. He had a role in Knocked Up, and he's in a new western starring Russell Crowe, 3:10 to Yuma, set to open in September. The likelihood of Wash's resurrection isn't great.

So, the boys appear mostly free and clear. Sign 'em up, Joss! But what about the ladies?

Morena Baccarin played the lovable consort to perfection, and she's had steady gigs since Serenity flew away.

She's appeared on everything from Stargate: SG-1 to How I Met Your Mother. She's also a series regular on Heartland, a medical drama starring Treat Williams that films in Canada. Maybe we can convince Joss to fly north to film the sequel.

Gina Torres is one busy lady.

Since playing Zoe Washburne, she's appeared all over the place, including The Shield, Without a Trace and Alias. She also had a regular role in the now canceled Standoff. (Am I sensing a theme here? That's three series regulars from Firefly, and all three of their new series have been canceled.) She played opposite Chris Rock in I Think I Love My Wife and has a role in the upcoming South of Pico, which sounds an awful lot like a Crash wannabe. Here's the thing, though: Torres was just as busy when Serenity was filmed. So I'm going to say she's gettable.

My favorite mechanic, played by Jewel Staite, must be back in order to keep the rusty old bucket of bolts Mal calls a ship from crashing.

Based on what I found, Staite should be available. She had a multi-episode guest spot on Stargate: Atlantis, but not much else. She is currently filming some action horror thing called The Tribe with a whole bunch of people I've never heard of before. I say when The Tribe is wrapped, Joss needs to snap her up.

Houston, we have a problem. Summer Glau is otherwise occupied at the moment.

Seems she managed to land herself a role opposite Lena Headey in The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She plays the newest version of the Terminator, named Cameron — ugh. Name aside, I would like to see this series last a while, rather than succumb to the apparent Firefly curse.

We can always hope for more of Joss Whedon's wit and wisdom via new creations. I, for one, hope he also finds time to revisit his old stomping ground aboard a failing spaceship whose crew never failed to entertain me.

    Shepherd Book

Shepherd Book also bought the farm and unless he too is resurrected, Ron Glass wont be needed.

    You are absolutely right.

I think I was so traumatized by Wash's death I completely blanked on Book.  Thanks for setting me straight.

    River

Summer Glau is soooo preettttyyyy.  *ahem*

Seriously, though, if Firefly somehow managed to get started up again I would be so very happy.  I'm going to be spoiled as it is this year, what with Bionic Woman and the Sarah Conner Chronicles (which, in my head means: SummerGlauLenaHeadyKateeSackhoffandMichelleRyan and Sci-Fi kickassedness).

And yes, "kickassedness" is a completely bastardized word.

I thought I was the only Firefly fan

It's nice to see a couple more. I absolutely loved this show and the movie. I want more, but the big question is whether Joss has the time.

Morena Baccarin. I put her on my most hottest top 10 list, but she didn't make the 100 list.  That's why I thought I was the only fan.

Not only is she hot, but her character Inera had me panting. The fact that Inera had women as well as men as her clients was another reason Joss is such a great writer. He really includes everyone he can.

    Enjoy your day

    Some nitpicking ;)Nathan

    Some nitpicking ;)

Nathan Fillion run on Desperate Housewives has not started (he will play half of a new couple moving into Westeria Lane)

Jewel Staite role on Stargate is not over. She will be in several other episodes as the new doctor in charge of everything.

    Nathan Fillion was also in

Nathan Fillion was also in Waitress. Which granted, isn't a current project, but I think its worth mentioning.

    WAITRESS!

It's definitely worth mentioning! I think I fell in love with him just a little bit when I saw that movie...

I'd rather have River than Cameron

I'm all for more Firefly/Serenity. It still escapes me why a great show like Firefly got cancelled to begin with. In my humble opinion, it should've had at least seven seasons, just like Buffy.

I have to say though that I'd completely prefer Summer Glau as River rather than as that Cameron terminator in the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Maybe I'm biased because somehow Lena Headey simply doesn't work for me as Sarah Connor. I thought she was great in "Imagine Me & You" and she was pretty much the only pleasant thing about "300", but I don't think she pulls off "psychotic" or "troubled" quite as well as Linda Hamilton does. Judging from the pilot episode, I believe "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" is a mediocre show, so why waste Summer Glau's talent on this rather than have her be River again? Get on it, Joss. Pretty please. :)

    deathbyblonde's picture

    Or better yet

Just have her do both.  Twice the Summer = Twice the glee.  (But yeah, she's far better as River.  I also like her as Tess on the 4400, because she is basically just River again).

    Serenity/Firefly...Wishful thinkin'???

As much as I would rather dive face first than every give Joss("Tara Murderer")Whedon credit for anything...And, I'm still feeling the sting of losing "Dark Angel" because Fox decided to go with "Firefly", and then ran it less than a dozen eps before pulling it...The prospect of a "Serenity 2" is highly unlike cause all the actors of the surviving characters plates, save Sean Maher, are pretty much full...Which disappoints me because, I too, would like to see the continuing adventures of the Serenity crew...

I think it's time to move on...And wait for a Serenity comic instead...

    Josy's picture

    I definitely think that it's

I definitely think that it's much more likely that we'll see a firefly comic than a sequel to serenity. We've already begun to get Buffy season 8, season 9 has been promised, and Angel season six is now I think being planned. Hopefully firefly will follow!

Did anyone else here read the firefly comics that were released to explain some of what happened between the end of the TV series and the movie?

    Serenity: Those Left Behind

Firefly Comics? Were there any other than the "Serenity: Those Left Behind" comic book? That's the only one I've read.

Speaking of TV continuing in comics

Don't forget Star Trek Year Four. So with all this TV continuing after being cancelled don't you think the powers that be would reconsider some of those shows now gone from our TV?

Here's hoping for more Firefly [even if only in comic book form --- other than the TPB of course].

    The Curse

I've noticed the curse, but it applies to all Whedon alumni. The only way I have seen to counter it is to have Leonard Roberts guest star on the first season. It will get a second season order, but may get canceled before it premieres. *cough*Tru Calling*cough*

    Firefly

I loved the marathon.  It was the perfect distraction to this long awaited night.

I also loved Morena's guest appearance on HIMYM as the "crazy eyed" girl.

Eight hours of Firefly does strange things to you....

Since I have nothing better to do until school starts (am i the only under-eighteener here? no offense ladies) I sat and watched nearly the entire marathon. by the end of it, i swearing in whatever language they speak.....it was quite amusing...to me.

mmmmmm.....Inara and Zoe.....two of my favorite characters...ever. this show basically reminded of why i loved joss whedon. gripping drama, witty humor, incredible dialogue.

i haven't seen Serenity yet, (though I'm planning to) but i'm not usually a fan of sequels unless the movie's planned that way. for me, they have to be REALLY good in order to work. and as much as i love joss, i don't a sequel would be a great idea....

    gardenia1786's picture

    The marathon was great, and

The marathon was great, and I even got my parents to watch a few episodes *gasp*

One note though, presuming that they're going to be filming close together, or they film the movie during the TV show off season, so Summer can do both at the same time. I would love to see Summer on a weekly basis, as well as Lena Headey (Can we say femslash fics, anyone? Anyone?) :)

Don't forget that the sequel to "Serenity" pretty much rests on the sales of the collector's edition! Here is a link to find out how to help make the sequel(s?) happen!

Also, didn't Book die too in the Serenity movie? One of my friends pointed out that you mentioned Wash's death, but not Book's ;)

Thank you, nogoal4u, for posting this! I'm really enjoying all the Firefly/Serenity talk that's been going on around here recently!

    Yes!

I would looooooooove to have more Firefly/Serenity. I, like most people, got hooked by the DVDs and that only happened recently. Still - I can't keep the DVDs out of my DVD player... I am completely enthralled by the characters, just like I was with Buffy. Still - I can not even begin to imagine another movie (or whatever) without the gorgeous Gina Torres! She would need to be able to play a major role - that said, I would love Alan Tudyk to be able to return in some form as well... b/c he's funny and one of my favorite actors and I think Joss should try to redeem himself after all the hell he puts us through killing beloved characters in horrible ways (*cough*Tara*cough*). He knows how to cue the water works.

I read something that said if Joss does another movie, he would have Ron and Alan back... I don't know if that was just something made up, but I like to believe it. I think it would be fun for him to do an "Out of Gas"-type movie... show background stories of all the characters. We'd find out about Shepard's past... see some loverly Zoe/Wash... maybe Mal on Shadow with his mother... find out why Inara had that vile thingy in the first episode...

Now that I've rambled on about my love of Firefly, I'll stop... Joss is God and I'll watch anything he puts in front of me. I just hope it has Gina Torres in it *grin*

    Summer Glau as Cameron

I saw the pilot for The Sarah Connor Chronicles at Comic-Con this year and also had a seat for the panel discussion that followed.

Summer Glau rocked the house as a terminator. She got the loudest applause of any cast member just for appearing on screen. (Her character is named "Cameron" as a nod to James Cameron who directed the first two movies).

I also miss Firefly. I bought the DVDs after I rented them from Netflix and decided I needed to own them.

Based on the commentaries and interviews that came out after Serenity was released, I believe that as far as a sequel, every one of those actors would do whatever it took to appear in anthing Joss did (even the dead ones). Perosnally, I would love his next project to be writing and directing an episode of The L Word. That herd could stand a little "thinning out."

    I love Firefly but hated

I love Firefly but hated Serenity more than I can explain. I felt angry and cheated and physically sick by the end of it because of the unremitting and unnecessary horribleness. The characters were all reduced to stereotypes of themselves -- especially Inara, whom I adored -- and their development was shoved aside to accommodate the massive central storyline that had nothing to do with anything. Plus, where was Inara's story that they talked about on the DVDs? Where was Shepherd Book's? And the way Mal asked if he was ever going to tell him and he said "No" and then died -- ha ha Joss, how very meta of you, fuck off.

    I have Serenity rage.

    Nathan Fillion on Soap Opera

I saw Nathan Fillion on a soap opera today.  Not sure which one, but it was on ABC.  It made me sad for him, but it was also really surprising.  I wonder if he's having a hard time getting work.
