Revenge movies are sweet

The holidays are supposed to be about love, joy and forgiveness. The holidays are supposed to bring us together. They remind us to give to those who are less fortunate. We are supposed to set aside our family feuds, our petty disagreements, our bitterness at perceived wrongs. (Heck, we should do that all year long.)

Revenge is not a part of the holiday season. No matter: Every season is the right time to watch a good tale of revenge on the screen. Revenge tales allow us to live vicariously through the fictional heroes who exact their righteous revenge in ways we never could.

So what are the best revenge movies of all time? EW.com has compiled a list. As you might expect, this list is primarily populated with testosterone-fueled action epics like The Godfather, Gladiator, Death Wish and Payback. But the girls do get in on the action, sometimes in surprising ways.

Let's start with the most obvious films. First, and most recent, we have Jodie Foster. Yes, The Brave One made the list. Such a shame for me to be forced into posting yet another shot of the lovely Ms. Foster.

The second obvious choice comes in the form of Kill Bill. Someone should have told Lucy Liu not to mess with Uma Thurman.

Another easy choice is V for Vendetta.

Then come the curious choices, starting with She-Devil. The fact that this movie makes a best of anything list is nothing short of disconcerting. I call this the film that Meryl Streep should have skipped — or maybe it was rehearsal for The Devil Wears Prada.

Then there's 9 to 5, the perfect revenge comedy full of tricks I've often considered using on my own boss. This, ladies, is what might have happened to Kelly, Kris and Sabrina had they not gone to work for Charlie.

Finally, we have my personal favorite, The Princess Bride. What's a rom-com/fairy tale that I never viewed as a revenge movie doing on this list? Well, the more I think about it, the more I can see the validity of this characterization. After all, true love only wins in the end because Inigo needs the man in black to fulfill his revenge plot. Had he not been needed to fulfill Inigo's revenge mission, poor Westley would have stayed mostly dead.

Luckily, Westley is restored to life and utters one of the best movie lines of all time. "There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours."

Would these films make your list of best revenge flicks? Which ones did EW.com miss?

    "The Girl Most Likely to..."

This is a TV movie from 1973 starring Stockard Channing. It was constantly shown on TV when I was growing up. Here is the IMDB description:

An ugly girl undergoes plastic surgery and becomes beautiful. She then takes revenge on all the people who mistreated her when she was ugly.

I used to love watching it. I haven't seen it in years and wonder if it's as good as I remember...lol.

and so began my lifelong adoration of one Ms Stockard Channing...

    The Business Of Strangers

A different kind of revenge movie.  Stockard Channing and Julia Stiles basically take out their anger towards men on one guy.  It's all twisty.  From IMDB:

Two businesswomen bond and reveal their inner natures while getting carried away on a revenge attack against an accused rapist.

The other interesting part of this movie, and if anyone else has seen it, please chime in, is that there is some AMAZING unresolved sexual tension between Channing and Stiles.  At times it hurts to watch.

    Or maybe it's just me.

    gypsywee's picture

    Yes!

I watched it ages ago, and just caught a bit of it again in the last couple of weeks. I particularly love the part where they are scrawling words all over his unconscious body!

And I agree about the sexual tension...painful.

    OutToLunch's picture

    ...and yes

Really interesting movie.  Beautifully acted.  Sexual tension, for sure.

    Extremities...

with Farrah Fawcett. This is a difficult film to watch, but it is a true revenge film. I remember seeing this in the movie theater and having the woman in back of me screaming "yes! yes! yes!" when Farrah was getting her "revenge." It elicits a lot of emotion...

    Theatre version

Helen Mirren actually performed that part in the play sometime in the mid 80s.....now that would have been a lovely production to see!

    A Different Kind Of Revenge

How about FIRST WIVES CLUB with Bette Midler, Diane Keaton & Goldie Hawn seeking revenge on their husbands who dumped them for younger women. This film also had Stockard Channing in it. Not quite the same kind of revenge seeking movie as the others, but I enjoyed it.
    wwxd's picture

    OOO I love that!

First Wives Club has to be one of my all time favorite movies! I must have seen it 100 times by now. Bette Middler is always a crack up and Goldie Hawn with her lips. Sadly my mom's lips are like that as well...

    Heathers

Ok, I know I'm starting to sound like a revenge-movie freak, but I can't believe I haven't mentioned one of my favorite movies *ever*, Heathers!

So Veronica didn't really mean to help kill anyone, but she definitely helped cover up the murders. And the final revenge scene is priceless!

    MIrrenFan's picture

    OMG!

I can't believe I forgot that either!  I can't tell you how many times I watched this when I was...younger.  Spike her TAB with Draino!  Priceless!!!!

    Hang 'Em High

My revenge movie is a western, Hang 'em High with Clint Eastwood. One by one he tracks down the cowboys that hung him.

There's something about revenge that gets the blood boiling.

    Revenge Movies

I never realized that I am such a huge fan of revenge movies, but my affinity for strong female characters should have tipped me off! Plus, who can resist lines like "As you wiiiiiiiiiiish" and "I'm not a witch, I'm your wife, but after what you just said, I'm not even sure I want to be that any more"? Gotta love "Princess Bride!!!"

As for one I would add, "The Quick and the Dead." I just love the last shoot out scene where she comes back from "the dead" and chucks her dad's star at the mayor.... Classic Revenge Enacted!

    REVENGE!!!

I just saw "Sweeney Todd" yesterday...

    Talk about a REVENGE movie!!!
I love Stephen Sondheim's musicals (with such intricate/clever music and lyrics), but if you see this film...keep in mind that it is literally a "bloody" musical (set in London)...

The script was definitely suited to Tim Burton's style...and I thought the casting was excellent...

You can almost read the character's thoughts by watching Johnny Depp's face...
