NBC wants more from "Life"Yesterday you put up with my rant about the possibility of an untimely end to Battlestar Galactica. Today I have decided to grace you with a whiff of positivity. The same folks at NBC/Universal who are messing with my Starbuck fix have granted me more of Sarah Shahi, much to my pleasant surprise.
Recent news of a scheduling shift for Shahi's freshman series Life had me concerned about the ultimate fate of the show. (OK, Shahi isn't the "central" character, but she's close.) My original thought was, "Great, they're trying to wrap up what's left in the can so they can move on to other things." See, usually when I get sucked into a new show early in its run, I end up bemoaning its death after half a season or less. It happened to me last year with Studio 60, and it's happening again with Bionic Woman. At least in the case of Bionic Woman, it didn't take me long to jump off the bandwagon. Well, as it happens, the decision by NBC seems to be a move for future ratings gain behind the Heroes juggernaught. The news was announced this week that NBC has placed a full season order for Life. Journeyman, the show currently occupying the post-Heroes slot, did not get the same happy news. Perhaps the powers that be are at last smiling upon one of my new program obsessions. What has me and others so obsessed? Shahi is only part of the reason, though I must say she is a good portion of the reason. Much as I liked Carmen, I love Dani Reese. This is a rich character with so many facets for Shahi to explore, I find myself drooling at what may lie ahead. And as I mentioned before, the central story doesn't even revolve around her. (Though we have learned that anyone and everyone may have been involved in poor Charlie's frame job.)
One of the other things that has me hooked is the dry wit of these characters. The wit is so subtle that sometimes I don't laugh until three sentences later, but that's what I love about it. It's funny without trying too hard to be funny. These characters see the absurd in their lives, and rather than be frustrated by things beyond their control, they laugh at it and themselves. In Damien Lewis' portrayal of Charlie Crews, you understand that he could have spent his time in prison growing angry or growing wise. He chose to grow wise. Doesn't mean he isn't plotting his revenge, but he's doing it patiently and with a sardonic smile that makes you wonder what he's thinking.
But the real fun for me has been watching Robin Weigert as Lt. Karen Davis.
Recognize her? Niether did I, and it bugged the heck out of me. So I looked her up after the pilot.
Cleans up good, don't she? I loved her in Deadwood and am enjoying the chance to see her with less goodirt on her face. Submitted by on November 28, 2007 - 3:00pm. |

I love Life...
...for all the reasons you stated...plus others that are harder to explain.
Some might watch 5 minutes of the show and see it as another cop drama...but it is so much more.
I guess the best thing to say about it is...that between the smart writing and the smart cast...it has quietly sucked me in and made me a fan.
oh sarah
I love this show
I'm so happy it got a full-season pick-up! Seems like the shows I like are always the ones that get canceled, so this is a nice surprise.
I love the subtly of the show, and also the Buddhist element. Sarah and Robin don't hurt, either. :)
Same here.
The shows I love canceled mid-season(even if they were only going to be a half season to begin with). The ones I like yet could miss get one season. The shows I can't stand go on for what seems like forever.
I'm glad one of my favorites of this season is going the distance.

Calamity Jane
After the pilot, I wasn't
After the pilot, I wasn't sure I was going to like Life. Damien is ... well, not to be mean, but he's just weird looking, and it was distracting to me. (I'm shallow, shoot me.) But, he grew on me. And Danni is beautiful, wonderfully complex, and I love that. The fact is I LIKE these characters, and that is such a refreshing change from all the scumbags on Damages, and the flawed hearts of gold that are littered all over the tv screen these days.
This show, is the quintessential reason to support the writers in their strike. This is first class, A+ writing, and they deserved to be recognized and compensated for it.

Life Is Good
So happy about this news. This is my only must see drama. Sarah, of course, is the reason I started to watch in the first place. But the show is very good and the cast is top flight. Adam Arkin, I have enjoyed for years, even when he started acting back in the day. Good gene pool.
Yes, Damian Lewis is an odd looking sort but he is perfect. Watch him in the Forsythe Saga and then tell me he isn't amazing.
Weigert is great in a role that, in my opinion, hasn't been fleshed out properly yet. I'm sure that will change now that the show has life, so to speak. She reminds me of Diane Neal from SVU.
This is a fantastic show. And what about the red headed woman from Mad Men (forget her name...Christine Hendricks?) as Ted's dream girl and Charlie's new step mom? She's got more curves than that crooked street in San Francisco!
Yes!
I've been waiting for this! A full season of Sarah Shahi! Well sorta. I really missed the show last week so I'm excited about tonight. YAY LIFE!
I Love Life!
This show is great! I love it. I'm not often hooked on shows this fast, but I love the story, I love the characters, I even like Charlie Crews (I still have trouble remembering the character's and actor's names, though).

Exactly!! =D
This is great news! Thanks

Life Has Never Looked Bettter
I'm a huge fan of Life and was thrilled to hear about full season pick-up. It's been one of the few highlights of the Fall 2007 schedule that I've been able to keep watching (ahem, Bionic Woman).
I watched the latest episode earlier and I just love the partnership between Dani and Crews...it's been fun to watch their comradie build over the first half of the season. And, as for the Lieutenant...well, she proved once again tonight that she's deliciously bad.
But do I love Dani Reese more than Carmen de la Pica Morales? Well, that might be taking things just a little too far. I know it's been a while, but need I remind you of the lapdance?! The lapdance.
Detective Reese has got a ways to go before she can top that.
I love this
Ranks up there with
I love this show and I am so happy that it got picked up for a full season. I think it ranks up there with Bones as far as character development. They are developing the characters to be just different enough from the rest of the smattering of faces on tv that we the boob tube watchers really are beginning to care about these people's lives and how they interact.
This is what makes it so much more than a cop show and this is why I love it. Keep it coming thats what I have to say.
Hallelujah!!!
so it's not just me?
I only started watching Life for Robin Weigert (now I'm hooked.) She caught my eye way back in the beginning of Cold Case-- she had one or two "walk-on" appearances on that show and it was like the hair stood up on my arms... I went WOW, she's got something special. At first I thought (I swear this is what I thought) that it was because, as an actor myself, I could tell she was the real thing, even just with the one or two lines they gave her on Cold Case.
When I found out she was cast as Calamity Jane, I couldn't think of anyone else who could have done that role. (I have a sneaking suspicion the role was written for her, just my hunch.le was written for her.) Soon I was checking IMDB.com regularly to see what she might be in next so I could mark my calendar...
At some point, it started to dawn on me that my reaction to Ms. Weigert was not just, um... aesthetic appreciation. Yes, I think she's an extraordinary actor. And yes, I am new to this site. Let me be very brave here, go out on a little limb here, and say, my "funny feelings" when I saw Robin Weigert work was the catalyst for me to come out. Only to myself so far... and anyone reading this! For that she'll always have a very special place in my heart. Thank you Robin-- I owe ya.
P.S. I had never even heard of much less seen the actor who plays Dani Reese. As I say, I am brand-spanking new to this beautiful new world I've stumbled upon...
Welcome
To this "new" world I trust that you will feel at home and like it here. As for Sarah Shahi, look her up on IMDB and pay particular attention to her role in The L Word (and keep an eye out for it, if you've got Showtime - Season 5 starts in 37 days and we all are counting down the days!). Shahi totally heated up that show in Seasons 2 and (especially) 3 and had us all pining for her in Season 3 (but alas, it was not to be) probably because she had Life in the pipeline. So her adoring/doting/drooling/etc... etc... fans were very happy when Life came about.
Peace.

Loved Deadwood---now I have to watch this!
I will go wherever anyone from the cast of Deadwood has landed---especially Calamity Jane---she was the best. If you never caught Deadwood I would suggest netflix-ing all three seasons. Great writing.... I only own 4 DVD collections: Buffy, Xena, The Office UK version, and Deadwood ---- to give you an idea of how great i think that show was! (if anyone cares...)

You Can Take the Girl out of The L Word...
But you can't take the L word out of the girl.
Was just watching Life, and Sarah got a nice "hello" from another female character. And by hello I mean, a pulled her in by the coat lapels and planted a nice hard kiss on her. And by the looks of it, she reciprocated. Nice smirk too.
Hello indeed.
(I assume this was a new episode, but not sure. Apologies if a re-run)

"I'm not sorry for what I did. I'm sorry for what I didn't do."
Gads!
This is a really old thread, but I don't see any recent articles on 'Life'.
CAN YOU BELIEVE Dani actually allowed herself to start an affair with her slimeball fat hairy boss?????
It's so gross it's funny.
Talk about from the sublime (Shane) to the rediculous (whatever this dude's name is.) Oh, and he calls her 'dude'. Funny stuff.
A couple eps ago, Dani had this exchange with a cop in a bar during an investigation:
Cop: 'Come here often?' *or some lame pickup line*
Dani: (flashes her badge)
Cop: 'So you're a girl cop?'
Dani: 'Did you just say girl cop?'
Cop: 'Oh, so you're a lesbo cop?'
Dani: 'Did you just say lesbo cop?' (Walks back to Crews)
Dani: 'Do birds mate for life?'
Crews:'Yeah, like geese and stuff'
Dani: 'I hate birds.'
The writers are very aware of Sarah's L Word past, no? Too funny!!
