'80s ladies videopalooza

As you are all aware, my satellite dish is dead. Many of you have been kind enough to offer suggestions on how to pass the time and deal with the withdrawal symptoms. For that I am grateful.

One such suggestion led me to my closet and the collection of old junior high and high school memorabilia kept in old Adidas boxes. I thought it might be fun to reminisce about a time when I was still convinced boys were worth dating but couldn't figure out why I got butterflies in my belly when I talked to some of my female friends. It was a time of parachute pants and big hair. Yes, ladies, I'm talking about the 1980s.

Going through my pile of '80s junk could only be complete with some tunes to help me through the process. Naturally, I picked some of my favorite ladies. Some of these women are still selling records and concert tickets; some can't escape their one-hit-wonder status. But they all brought a smile to my face while I sifted through memories in my basement. So I couldn't help but send a little '80s nostalgia your way. Here are the rockin' women who have helped me stave off my TV withdrawal for yet another day.

Cyndi Lauper — I'm a girl. I just wanna have fun! No matter how many hair color transformations she goes through, to me she will always be that girl dancing through her house, happily rebelling against all things parental. You've gotta love the fact that Cyndi's definition of fun includes cool shades and conga lines through town.

Bananarama — What could be better than women in overalls working on cars? OK, they could lose the '80s hair, but really. I think my love for this video should have been a clue to my sexual identity. It is just one of many clues I seem to have missed in my younger days.

The Bangles — Big hair, mini dresses, and a full-body leotard — these are the things I remember of the Bangles. That and the fact that I wandered around for weeks looking like an idiot trying to walk like some ancient dead Pharaoh. Something tells me ancient Egyptians didn't walk any differently than we do.

Sheila E — Widely recognized as one of the best female percussionists around, Sheila E has lived a glamorous life bouncing around with everyone from Prince to Stevie Wonder. Best line of the song? "Boys with small talk and small minds really don't impress me in bed." I feel the same way, oddly enough.

Toni Basil — The quintessential one-hit wonder lives on. In my world, Mickey was always a girl. Again with the clues I should clearly have paid more attention to.

Of course, now it is no longer this video that comes to mind whenever I hear the song. Instead, visions of Eliza Dushku and Gabrielle Union dance in my head.

So where are these '80s ladies now? Funny you should ask. There's a nice little photo spread over here that will help clue you in on this bunch and many more. Check it out, then come back and tell me who your favorite '80s ladies are.

    Bangles!

I still own a couple of cassette tapes, and I'm pretty sure I still know all the words to "Eternal Flame." (Close your eyes, give me your hand . . .)

    Belinda Carlisle

With the GoGo's but mostly after she went solo.  Every time the video for Heaven on Earth came on MTV I would turn it way up and sit thisclose to the screen.  If anyone would dare speak they would feel my wrath!  Oh how I loved her.  And she is still hot!!!   Then there was Joan Jett (she looked liked such trouble - I loved it) and Pat Benatar!  I was also a HUGE Madonna fan.

    Looking back, I'd have to

Looking back, I'd have to say that Belinda Carlisle was my first crush. Granted, I didn't know it at the time, seeing as I was just a little kid... but still. I was/am (=P) all about the video for "I Get Weak", though. And you're totally right; she is still hot!

    Age Appropriate

Well, this made me feel slightly better about being a 40 year old woman downloading Cruel Summer to my iPod. Thanks!

    Yummy! Gabrielle Union

Did she make the After Ellen Top 100. Because if she didn't that justs a crime.  But I agree, every since see Bring It On, whenever I hear this song I always have visions of Eliza and Gabrielle, and occasionally Kirsten. But mostly Gabrielle and Eliza. Mmhhhhmmm.

    Bangles!

Oh God, I loved the Bangles when I was a kid. Looking back I had a monumental crush on Susanna Hoffs. I remember watching the Eternal Flame vid when I was knee high to a grasshopper and thinking 'ooo'. And from that photo spread of 'where are they now' Ms Hoffs is still smoking hot. *fans self*

    Mickey

I didn't even know there was an original in English of Mickey, it sounds so strange... For me that song will always belong to Carola, I used to listen to it all the time when I was little. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcOQMnd1ZkU ) And what was up with translating songs, it hasn't really been done in the last 15 years, has it? It's disturbing, it's not the first time I realize that a song I used to love as a kid was actually just a bad translation to Swedish of an original in English sung by someone else entirely...

    I absolutely love the

I absolutely love the Go-Go's!!! Each and every one of them was cute, and I really like the way that they weren't as obviously sexy and 'for the boys' in their looks and style as the Bangles. They seemed more aware of their female audience, and the impact that they had for teenage girls. They also had really excellent top-notch music and  the musical chops to top it all off. Plus, Gina Schock is obviously 'one of the family', although she has never confirmed it.... I heart the Go-Go's!

What about your mother- your mother earth?

    I heart the Go-Go's too

Loved their music and style. The gal that formed our college intramural flag football team gave us the moniker "The Go-Go's". Some of us complained that we should have a more intimidating name, like "Sharks" or "Cougars", but the captain held firm, and said that what could be more intimidating than the image of smokin' hot women with guitars (and drums) playing kick ass music.  She was right.

    Oh my, Wendy & Lisa...

    Swoon...

And then, for the Dutch folks here, I was a HUGE Dolly Dots fan... I loved Angela Groothuizen! (still think she's pretty amazing)

Terrible shame that all the ladies in the link posted above have clearly felt the need to have plastic enhancements, or at least botox. They all look quite freakish if you ask me.

    But of course

Joan Jett the prototypical badass rocker.

Am I the only one who found it sad how many of those faces looked all plastic like now?

    Grace Jones!

Warm Leatherette! Nightclubbing! oooooooh pull up to the bumper baby! in your long black limousine ... A hot summer night sweatin' at the disco in Durham NC ... pullin' up to some hot girl's bumper ... uh oh -- having a hot flash! gotta go!

I love and still love Debbie

I love and still love Debbie Harry. I can't really choose though. Oh of my only fond memories with my really father is him putting me on his shoulders so we could dance to Madonna's Lucky star. Wow, I know I just admitted how young I am.

I just notice that most my memories of my parents involve music. My mother was always singing Escape club's wild wild west to me. "She's so mean but I don't care I love her eyes and her wild wild hair." For the record, I am not that mean but I do have wild hair.
