Five TV series that were cut down too soon

Occasionally when I'm bored, I start wandering the web looking for lists. Lists of things to like. Lists of things to hate. Lists of things to lament. Lists of things to applaud. Of late, I've been seeking out lists that help me counteract my negativity about all this "reality" I'm being asked to consume on TV. One recent list praises five television shows whose runs were cut short because the masses simply weren't bright enough to catch on. (Bionic Woman does not fall into this category.)

I expected the list to be an homage to one-hit wonders of the television world. Instead, I found a couple of one-and-done examples of sheer brilliance, but also a few shows that got more than one shot at gaining an audience. For example, I agree that Arrested Development was brilliant, but it did get a three-season run. That's a far cry from a 12-episode complete series DVD box set. So I came up with my own list of TV shows that the throngs missed out on, thus depriving the rest of us of the opportunity to see these story lines play out over more than a single season.

1. My So-Called Life

In my opinion, this was the best teen drama ever to grace the airwaves. There was no shrinking away from so-called adult issues. Those of us who did catch on to this show got a chance to watch Claire Danes develop her craft while her character, Angela Chase, and friends dealt with teenage romance, alcohol abuse, homosexuality and midterms. Oh, and despite the series' all-too-brief 19-episode run, Time magazine found a spot for MSCL on its list of the 100 best television shows of all time.

2. Firefly

Joss Whedon. Gina Torres. Space travel. 'Nuff said. This show deserved far more than 14 episodes. The big-screen movie was a nice consolation prize, but I would've preferred a longer life for the series.

3. Dead Like Me

Ellen Muth is my favorite grim reaper. A mere 29 episodes was simply not enough time for me to spend with her. I hope that when I kick the bucket, she's there to meet me with her sardonic grin and soft, occasionally gravelly voice. I can think of no better way to ease into the afterlife than with the biting humor and bitterness of Georgia Lass. Yes, I'm twisted. You should know this by now.

4. Freaks and Geeks

Here's another one that made Time's list of the 100 best shows, and rightfully so. I remember watching this show and seeing myself in almost every character on the screen. This was That 80's Show done as a dramedy, and I loved every minute of its 18 episodes.

5. Wonderfalls

I must begin by admitting that I was one of the unfortunate masses who missed this show the first time around. But now, thanks to its resurrection by Logo, I've become hooked. Watching Caroline Dhavernas Jaye Tyler discuss life, love and the pursuit of happiness with inanimate objects is must-see TV for me. Plus, the absurdity of Katie Finneran's successful lawyer Sharon trying to avoid being caught necking with her girlfriend makes me laugh out loud. And it's a grand reminder of the talent of Lee Pace, who was brilliant in Soldier's Girl and makes me laugh and cry as Ned in Pushing Daisies. For his sake, I hope there's no Wonderfalls curse.

I know there are more of these brief flashes of television genius lying dormant in the cancellation graveyard. So, tell me, which of television's one-season wonders would make your list?

    Whoopi was brilliant.

It was a clever and funny show and it got one season. WTF?

    I agree with your list...

and would just like to add...from the same team who gave us My So-Called Life...Relativity.  I think it had the same quality as all the other Zwick and Herskovitz television series...though it wasn't given much of a chance.

If you liked My So-Called Life...

you should check out the latest Zwick/Herskovitz show "Quarterlife."  So far, it's just web-based mini-episodes, but it's supposed to be on tv this February.  Good stuff.

    Shows...

I agree whole-heartedly with MSL, Firefly, and Wonderfalls. It's disappointing that these ridiculously brilliant shows are no more, while others somehow survive.

I wish that the show, "The Days" had a while longer to continue. I think there were only six
episodes, but I really enjoyed them. Another that comes to mind (athough reruns are still
shown), is Futurama. I still don't understand why Fox opted to cancel that and keep "King of the Hill."

    Witchblade

I was absolutely hooked at the time, and not just because of Yancy Butler!

Another show that deserved a better fate was the L&O spin-off, Conviction, from a couple of years ago, and not just because of Julianne Nicholson.

And very recently - our dearly departed Journeyman.

    ackat's picture

    Totally with you...

On "Witchblade," I freakin loved that show! I keep my fingers crossed that one day I'm going to see an announcement for a box set pop up on Amazon.

    Yancy

Butler is my goddess. Something about those husky voiced brunette bad ass girls...paging Faith. Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls were awesome as well. I think both were better than Pushing Daisies, but all three were created by Brian Fuller if I'm remembering correctly. I really miss Popular too. I know it got two seasons, but I was dying to see the third and not just because of all the rumors that Sam was gonna come out in season three.

    Lets not forget

    Carnivale.

The series was cancelled before you could find out what happened because it cost way too much to make but the money was well spent. It was beautifully shot and really sucked you in. There have been rumors about a mini-series for years. I can only hope its true.

I've learned since then to not actually watch anything I like for fear it will immeditely get cancelled.

    Carnivale was gorgeous

I can't believe they didn't even allow for a wrap-up episode or something for Carnivale.

And an amen from the choir on these great shows that didn't get the audiences and seasons they so richly deserved.

How many seasons of that Paris on a farm crap were there? There's no justice in TV land.

    Yes

    Yes to Carnivale AND Deadwood.

    Deadwood

Deadwood (2004-2006) definitely has my vote. Not living in the USA, I didn't even found out about this series untill a couple months ago, when Robin Weigert showed up on "Life".

Two weeks ago I consumed all 3 seasons in a few days, I'm still stunned. I can't even begin to explain how I enjoyed a series that a lot of people consider misogynist, but I did, soooo much. Even that pig, Al, I grew to love.

The shakespearean dialog, the cursing (so much cursing), Calamity Jane and Joanie Stubbs, to name a few of the singularities and qualities of the show.

Here's a video of the lesbian romance that ensued http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_cx_1mWt8EY

    Freaks and Geeks!

That show would be my number one. It's television perfection, I swear. Never took a wrong turn. The order aside, your top five is my top five. Honorable mention to "Once and Again." I know it lasted three seasons, but it got cut off amid a great gay storyline, and that has always bummed me out.

YES YES YES MaebyFunke. Freaks and Geeks was fabulous. Ditto on once and again. And although it didn't have a queer storyline, I liked that ABC show set in the 60s that the main girl danced on American Bandstand and her brother was in VietNam... too lazy to look it up but I really liked that show and I have NO idea what happened to it... too bad.

My So Called Life remains to this day one of my all time favorite TV shows....the most realistic teen show I've seen!!! Loved Angela, Rayanne and Rickie but I especially realted to the relationship between her and her Mother....I def. went through that stage!!! You can still watch the show on abc.com!!!!

    Higher Ground

Did anyone watch/love this FOX Family show before it got canceled? It starred Hayden Christensen, A.J. Cook, and Candyse McClure (Dee from Battlestar Galactica) amongst others. The only thing it was missing was a gay kid, but still I wish it had lasted. The issues it dealt with were way better than what One Tree Hill or Gossip Girl are addressing.

    Drive

Drive. Nobody probably heard of this show because Fox did the first 4 episodes in 2 2-hour blocks on a Sunday and Monday then cancelled it after its fifth episode the following Monday. By the time anyone who saw it was able to tell their friends about the show, new viewers were already 4 episodes behind.

But for those of us who saw it, it displayed the trademark mix of drama, action and comedy that are hallmarks of shows produced by Tim Minear (who was also responsible for Wonderfalls and Firefly on your list). It also had some extremely solid performances, especially those of Melanie Lynskey (as a single mom racing for her new baby), Nathan Fillion (searching for his lost wife) and Dylan Baker (as a nebbish man trying to spend time with his daughter before he dies). Lastly, it featured some of the very best and seamless special effects on television that put you right in the midst of the race (and were nominated for an Emmy, which is pretty amazing for a show that only 5 episodes).

You can probably track it down as a Bittorrent stream online (although the creatives won't be paid when you watch it online), but be prepared to be disappointed that it ends just when it starts getting good.

i'm gonna give it to Veronica Mars, Joan of Arcadia and Sugar Rush for sure. And from your list Dead Like Me.

Right now i'm a little blank on other shows but since lots of shows i've liked have been cancelled i'm sure it will come back to me.

Did you watch the first season? I thought it was just incredibly witty and Kristen Bell pretty much became my hero in the first episode of it.

Well you got me there yeah

Well you got me there yeah i tried jumping in mid-season though I do believe I did watch the very first episode. I fallowed Kristen Bell from Deadwood to VM and I just felt that her talents where being waisted on this teen drama.

Oh Deadwood another show that ended too soon I guess I really didn't watch the last season.

    JOAN OF ARCADIA

The reason I hate CBS with a passion is because they took just long enough to decide they were cancelling Joan of Arcadia to make it impossible for another network to pick it up. ...Then they replaced it with Ghost Whisperer. OMG, could they be more f-ing stupid?

Luckily, I got the whole series on DVD. Jennifer and I watch it and Buffy the Vampire Slayer from time to time. It cheers us up.

    Firefly. I don't even

    Firefly.

I don't even know if I have another answer, b/c I feel so strongly about the fact that Firefly was cancelled. I'm bummed about Dark Angel, but the second season was weak and I'm not surprised it was cancelled... still disappointed by it though... I <3 Max & Original Cindy. I think all the other shows I'm in love with are either still on the air or had a long, beautiful life lol It would have been nice to have at least one more season of "Angel" because it was starting to get back on its feet after the incest weirdness, but I'm at peace with it.

Firefly, however, I'm not at peace with. That needs to return in the form of another movie or something... although things that happened in the movie would make anything feel... empty or something. *shrug*

    Birds Of Prey

    I know!

Oh my god, the end of Hex was so tragic because there wasn't a proper one.  And I totally agree with Out of Practice too, that show had, by far, one of my favorite lesbian characters on TV.

And the other British show that got cancelled with no real ending, Sugar Rush.  How amazing was that show?  I just got to visit Brighton, England and it is AMAZING!  What more can you ask for on New Years than a pub full of lesbians with English accents and really great cider?

    rarticalsista's picture

    Hex

Yeah the first time I watched the last ep of Hex I was thinking WTF??? I loved the show.
Regina Barnes was indeed one of the best lesbian characters on tv so it was crap it got axed.
Sugar Rush... yeah What kind of ending was that. Sure it was funny but still I wanted more.

Straight isn't normal, it's just more common!

    MissKittysMom's picture

Agree with a bunch already mentioned: Firefly, Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Joan of Arcadia, Carnivale. I'll add these:

Miracles - That name makes it sound sappy and sweet. It's not. Miracles is dark, unsettling, ambiguous, and challenging. Skeet Ulrich stars as a man whose job is debunking miracles, and whose job costs him his faith. That's when the real miracles start happening. But as co-star Angus Macfayden tells him, who says God has anything to do with it? 13 episodes. Produced by David Greenwalt, who wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and co-created Angel with Joss Whedon.

The Inside - Another Tim Minear show (Firefly, Wonderfalls, Drive).  Peter Coyote, Rachel Nichols, Adam Baldwin, and Katie Finneran work a special FBI unit that tracks serial killers. Unlike the CSI procedurals, The Inside is psychological drama in Tim Minear's distinctive style. Unfortunately, this one never made it to DVD. 13 episodes.

Profit - Machiavellian plotting in a series where none of the characters are good guys. Dated computer graphics, but otherwise outstanding and wonderfully disturbing. Stars Adrian Pasdar as Jim Profit, whose goal is to take down his employer by any means possible. Also stars Keith Szarabajka, who later played the tortured vampire hunter Holtz in season 3 of Angel. 8 episodes. Another David Greenwalt production.

Max Headroom - Bring back M-M-M-Max! He's only 15 minutes into the future. 15 episodes.

    GoldringI's picture

    Max Headroom

I always loved the Max Headroom concept. Right now, there's a digital television awareness ad running on Channel 4 that features an older, balder Max complaining that now everybody's doing the digital thing.

(The Government over here has had the wonderful idea of freeing up the airwaves by turning off the analogue signal, so there're a lot of 'make sure you've got digital before when your area gets cut off so you don't miss anything' ads.)

    fallon ash's picture

    Mr & Mrs Smith

Completely agree with Firefly. Also, Birds of Prey, loved that one! And a long lost favourite of mine: Mr & Mrs Smith - the 90s one with Maria Bello and Scott Bakula. Just the right amounts of action and comedy and mystery without getting too serious. That was such an awesome show!

    My So Called Life

My friends and I used to love that show.

Dead Like Me and Freaks and Geeks were great too. The other two I didn't see.

Another show that I remember fondly and that only got two seasons is a british show called This Life. It was brilliant and should have gone on for much longer, has anyone else seen that one?

    GoldringI's picture

    This Life

I saw the first couple of episodes when it originally came out (it's been repeated at least once in its entirety) but have never got around to seeing it all. When it was first shown (and still today) it was considered a high-watermark in British drama, but like most of our awards-baiting drama series, it was only really meant to have a short run - the only things that run and run in Britain are soaps and comedies (and Doctor Who). But given their careers since, I don't think the cast will've minded all that much.

There was a tenth anniversary show last year - titled, oddly enough, This Life + 10* - that not having seen most of the show, I didn't watch, but the reviews unfortunately weren't enthusiastic. It's available, as the rest of the show is, on Region 2 DVD.

*Apparently the original titles were used, and they just had '+ 10' as the normal episode title.

    Good choices!

I've gotten sooooo many people hooked on Freaks and Geeks, ha! It is sooo damn good, I lament the loss of it daily, ha. Along with My So Called Life! (Well, and Arrested Development, 3 seasons was not long enough!!!)

Tho sadly I lent my Freaks and Geeks dvds to someone i went on like one date with and uhhh....it is safe to say i won't be getting it back, because....errr, i'm not calling them ever again, ha.

i'm not convinced that either wonderfalls or freaks and geeks would have been as good in their second seasons.

I love hate to be finicky, but Sugar Rush was a Channel 4 show, not a BBC one. Not that the channels haven't both cancelled good shows, or worked together closely in the past*, but irritation where irritation is due, I say.
