"CSI" gets a fresh face in Jessica Lucas

To warn or not to warn, that is the question. Casting news, while potentially spoiler worthy, isn't necessarily considered warn worthy. However, for avid CSI fans, the appearance of a new female CSI might give off hints of an unhappy end for a current female CSI. While at least one person over at tvguide.com claims to have the answers, I don't.

So, I will warn you that what follows is only spoiler-worthy if you have not seen the past two season enders for CSI. If you have, nothing I'm about to tell you about plot points will come as a surprise.

If you watch CSI at all, then you are likely aware of Jorja Fox's reported contract difficulties. At the end of this past season, viewers were left with an image of her character, Sara Sidle, trapped under a wrecked sports car in the middle of nowhere. Signs of life were, shall we say, limited. For CSI fans, the debate has been raging since before the finale ever aired about whether or not Sara would survive the crash. Will the CSI cast photo look like this next season?

Well, I can't tell you if any of these faces will disappear, but for at least four episodes, an additional face will appear. That face belongs to Canadian actress Jessica Lucas.

For those of you out there, like me, who don't recognize Lucas, allow me to fill you in. Her history includes Canadian teen drama Edgemont and the films The Covenant and She's the Man, which you'll recall from She Made Me Watch This is a remake of Just One of the Guys.

Lucas also showed up as a bit player in the very beginning of The L Word episode "Losing It" (where she made out with another woman).

The bigwigs at CBS are quick to point out that Lucas' character is a new edition, not a replacement for Jorja Fox. The question is, do we believe them? I for one, have my doubts. Sara might very well survive that car crash, but does that mean she'll stick around in Vegas? Who knows. I do know at least one thing for sure. The legions of femslash writers out there are likely to ignore Sara's death (if it happens) just as they have ignored her on screen romance with Grissom.

And frankly, much as I enjoy Jorja Fox and the character of Sara Sidle, if the character's death would prevent me from having to see Sara and Gil making doe eyes at each other and getting all snugly, then so be it. I have not been able to properly watch an episode of CSI since Sara walked into Gil's bedroom in a bathrobe. The very last bedroom I wanted to see Sara walk into in a bathrobe is one with Gil Grissom waiting on the bed. Perhaps my own fascination with femslash has done something to my brain, but the idea of Grissom and Sara romancing one another disturbs me. I honestly walked around the house after the big reveal mumbling, "My eyes. Oh, my eyes."

Ah, that's better.

    she stays on the show.  I do not know that I would watch as much if she weren't on since she is my favorite!

    And yes, much better..  :)

    I'm not sure I would watch the show at all without her on it. She's my favorite character too.

    I knew Jorja was leaving.. but I too disliked that her character liked Grisom.. I mean they looked like a weird couple.. but I am glad that they're getting Lucas in on this.. and I couldn't believe I missed her on She's The Man [gotta watch it again]

    CSI: Las Vegas rules.. and the season they completed was awesome.. Just hope it gets much better when Lucas arrives to the show! :] [Hopefully some lesbianism would be a plus but that's my wishful thinking heh]

    I don't know if it's just me, but the nonchemistry between those two is just all wrong.  Can't wrap myself around it at all.

    she looks different now, but i remember her from Life As We Know it.. i think i was the only one who watched that show. i didn't like her character either- she got in the way of the student/teacher relationship that i liked. yes, i know its wrong in reality, but it was tv!

    The only reason I've watched CSI from it's very beggining it's because of Jorja Fox character Sara Sidle, so if the final decision is to take her off the show I refuse to watch that series again.

    I can asure this because the same thing happened to me when Shannen Doherty disappeared from the cast of Charmed.

    that was waaaay too wrong... why oh why they didn't put Sofia with her; that would have been absolutely perfect!!! mmmm, Detective Curtis...too hot...

    ever since the "King baby" episode :) So I agree: Grissom and Sidle? Are you kiddin me?!

    I do hope Jorja stays on CSI for a while longer... Jessica Lucas in "Life as we know it"? It vaguely rings a bell - I was too busy eyeing Missy Peregrym ;p

    I think Sara and Gris are cute together as far as it goes.  I don't get straight people, but whatever, it was well written. And she was always a side character struggling with her inner torment until Gris, this last season we got much more screentime and we see her happy face more.

    HOWEVER recovering from a near death experience is just the sort of thing to wake a character up to certain aspects of herself that she may have been denying existed...like being attracted to certain blondes (my fav is Sophia but I'd settle for Cath... or for that matter, Wendy or the new woman, brunettes are nice too :).  An idea that is being fully explored in the fan fic on sites like livejournal's sara_sofia community.

     Yeah, I would probably lose interest in the show without Sara on it too.

     He will back up sewars, rearrange street sighns and steal everyone's left shoe.

    Jessica is signed up for four episodes. Lots of men and women will want her to be on the show longer than that. The L Word adds another element to her otherr roles.

    I was never fond of Sara Sidle. I just couldn't warm up to her. And her relationship with Grissome just made my skin crawl. (There were other women that would have made much better partners for him.)

    I don't know if Jorja was directed to play Sara the way she does, but I found Sara without passion. How can you attract anyone, if there's no passion.

    As for me, Id like she to stay =) I dont know why but Catherine (Marg H.) attracts my attention a lot..ahem.. I like this woman :P
