TV alerts: "Smokin' Aces," "Primary Colors," "Mad Men"Consider this the weekend of small lesbian parts. (I know, I know — there are no small lesbian parts, only small lesbian actors.) Several movie offerings include glimpses of gay ladies. Saturday at 8/7c on HBO, Alicia Keys tries to make her character as straight as possible in Smokin' Aces. (When Keys first got the script, she asked, "What's this gay s---?" — and it all went downhill from there.)
After 30 minutes of that, you can give up and switch over to Cinemax (yeaahhh!) for Primary Colors (8:30/7:30c). Kathy Bates plays a "gay lesbian woman" (I swear that's what she calls herself) with a shotgun and a conscience. And the cast includes Allison Janney and Emma Thompson, too! This thinly veiled Clintonian saga from 1998 might seem like a brand new film, now that the real-life wronged wife has become a presidential candidate.
Finally, starting this Sunday at midnight, the first season of the critically acclaimed Mad Men will be rebroadcast on AMC. The season eventually includes a heartbreaking lesbian scene (is there any other kind?) — you can read all about that here. And if none of those appeal to you, there's always The Fabulous Baker Boys on Fox Movie Channel at 8/7c on Saturday. No lesbian characters there, unless you count every woman in the audience when Michelle Pfeiffer starts slithering all over that grand piano. Submitted by on January 18, 2008 - 4:37pm. |

Primary colors was one of my favorite movies for a long time. Maura Tierney is in it as well, and overall the cast works well together. Just a warning though, it does have a fair amount of swearing
which is perfect for a drinking game.Smokin' Aces
I liked the film. Just because its my sort of film. As for the "gay" thing in it. That was complete bull. I just thought Alicia Key's character leaving her partner to think she was dead to go off with that bloke was grim. It just seemed like a really hideous thing to do just to make sure we knew she was straight. The other chick though was way cool, with the huge gun, I want one. I mean they could have left it with just a bit of lesbian subtext and if they wanted Alicia Keys to go off with the bloke then yeah after she knew her partner was ok. They were sposed to be really close mates and I just thought it seemed like such a betrayal. I like to pretend that didn't happen at the end. I really wanted those 2 to win and kill the dude, they seemed like they had way the best plan.

I agree with you and that it
Alicia's
Alicia's character couldn't kiss her girlfriend in the movie, because then everyone would think she's gay, right? I mean, only lesbian actors play lesbian parts. Everyone knows that. And since Alicia is absolutely, 100% not gay, she could never really play one on the tv. Now, excuse me while I hit my head on something.
Seriously, Alicia, who are you trying to convince, us or you?
Many things
Isn't that what they do?
I think it's interesting that in order to show that she's straight she's gotta leave her girl hangin' when a man comes along. It seems like there's this subliminal message that says any kind of loyalty to your girl is proof that you're gay, regardless of your sexual orientation. I wouldn't have cared if the two of them were lovers or just friends it just would have been nice if there was some solidarity. When guys back each other up no one thinks that their gay but when women do it then it's assumed there's more going on than friendship. But then again isn't this what straight women do in real life, leave their girl hangin' when they get a man? This reminds me of a real life situation where my best friend started dating this guy who questioned her as to whether I was gay or not because I was a bit protective over her. Although I'm bi what does my sexuality have to do with anything, she was my best friend and I didn't want to she are get hurt again. Needless to say when the relationship got serious I didn't hear from her again until he turned out to be a jerk who stole stuff from her for drugs and ended up going to jail. Like I said, isn't that what straight women do, leave there girl hangin' when a man comes along? Movies should show more loyalty and solidarity between women regardless of the characters sexual orientation. Why do they always have to abandon their friends when a man enters the picture?

Alicia Keys
I've never suspected Alicia Keys of being gay. But a few people on here have speculated. Where has that come from anyway?
It did suck she left her mate behind. All through the film they seemed really tight so it seemed uncharacteristic of her to do that. She was looking pretty fine in this film. But that gun, that totally made the film for me. Short women with big guns are hot, dunno why Alicia's character couldn't see that.
