News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

TV alerts: "Jezebel James," "John Adams," "Wisegal"

Doesn't it suck when things that seem so, so great end up going so, so horribly wrong? No, I'm not talking about Eliot Spitzer, though that certainly is disheartening. I'm talking about The Return of Jezebel James, the new series from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. It stars Parker Posey, Lauren Ambrose and Dianne Weist. The premiere is tonight at 8/7c on Fox.

But that litany of great names might add up to nothing. The reviews and promo clips are not pretty. Says the L.A. Times,

The problem is that from these folks you expect a fascinating female lead, but you get instead every uptight, cellphone-clenching, relationship-avoiding, food-issue-riven working woman you've ever seen (and never met).

Uh-oh. Plus, there's a laugh track, which ... why? The Boston Globe notes that the show's stars deserve better:

With her soft deadpan and her renegade vibe, [Ambrose] doesn't belong within a mile of a laugh track. ... Posey, so adept at being both ironic and sympathetic, is no better off in this unfunny mire.

Sigh. Still, I'll probably tune in, and maybe it will be better than it sounds. Or at least better than reading one more headline about Spitzer.

On Saturday, Lifetime offers the return of Alyssa Milano, in Wisegal. She plays a young widow who ascends to power in the mob. I dunno, Lifetime, that's not a very impressive title — why not something like Mother, May I Sleep With the Mob Now That My Husband Is Neither My Stepson nor My Lover?

Milano also produced the film. The Lifetime website has a gallery called "Alyssa Milano: Through the Years" to keep you entertained until Wisegal debuts. It includes this cute photo:

I think the real winner of the weekend is likely to be John Adams, starring Paul Giamatti and the always impressive Laura Linney. It starts at 8/7c on HBO and will probably be much more educational than any of my high school history classes. Here's the trailer:

If that sounds too serious for you, switch over to World's Funniest Commercials, hosted by Kathy Griffin. The theme is "Hilarious Liaisons," which could mean a same-sex pairing or two. It airs at 8/7c on TBS.

    Laugh track a go-go.

OMG!  That freakin JJ laugh track was a total distraction to the plot and dialogue of the show.  I couldn't watch the whole thing, no matter how much I like the actresses.  So bad and so wrong.

    Jezebel James

I caught the last half hour of the show and that was difficult to sit through. I kept thinking, my god I love Parker Posey, she has talent and she's wasting it on this show. The dialogue is incredibly obvious and I kept thinking of a quote a comedian said-just because you put a laugh track over it doesn't mean the job still doesn't stink. Entertainment weekly wrote about the show and though hey also agree Posey and Ambrose are talented the show is rather lack luster and has many flaws. Of course I'll try watching another episode because it's Parker Posey, come on, but it certainly isn's as sarcastic as witty as I would expect it to be.

    The Jezebel James was

The Jezebel James was terrible! And not because the two main actresses aren't good at what they do because they are, but the writing on the show was just terrible. It was as if they were trying to recreate Lorelai Gilmore and import her to this show and it just didn't work.

I have to say, I think comedy has moved on from the laugh track format with shows like The Office, 30 Rock and My Name Is Earl. There's just no room for it on a comedy show. We don't need you to tell us when to laugh, we'll laugh if you write the funny. Please, don't patronize us.

Parker Posey is fantastic but man did she pick the wrong project to be in.

Pilots are usually terrible because they try to cram in so much of character detail and setup into one show that it usually doesn't work. Still, with good shows pilots still spark something in me that makes me want to tune in to the rest of the show. Like 30 Rock, The Office, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, etc. Jezebel James had nothing to make me want to return to the show.

But at its core, the reason why it just didn't work at all was because the premise was terrble and not counting the amazing two lead actresses, the show had nothing in it to spark my interest.

    =(

Good grief ... WHY! if it is bad it means won't be aired in latinamerica so i won't see it unless i download it, also i hate gilmour girls ... i just do. Such a waste ... both Parker and Lauren are great the think of the two of them in a show together it's pure bliss , i would watch it though if ever reaches our Fox HELL i would probably even download it even if it sucks
