TV alert: "Nip/Tuck" tours "lesbania"So, are you watching Nip/Tuck? I am, but often through my fingers — and not because of the plastic surgery scenes. I want to see Portia de Rossi and Joely Richardson as often as possible (who wouldn't?), but every time they show up, I wince and fear mishandling of the story line. [Warning: Mild spoilers]
Last week, I really liked Julia's heart-to-heart with Sean. She seemed like a woman who's not really embracing or rejecting anything just yet. And she was kind to her ex-husband, which is always a breath of fresh air on a show that has come to rely on exposure (of every sort) and betrayal for drama. It wasn't always like that — the first couple of seasons of Nip/Tuck were richer and more complex, still soapy but not always taking the easy way out. And the easy way out is what worries me. Right after Julia's forthrightness warmed the cockles of my heart, Sean and Christian played cock of the walk, tossing around epithets and bravado until I felt sick. So I don't know whether to be optimistic about the Julia/Olivia relationship — well, I know I shouldn't have high hopes for a happy ending, but will we even get to enjoy a few short weeks of romance and hotness? I'm a fool to believe, and Liz (Roma Maffia) would be the first to tell me so.
Here's a teaser for tonight's episode, in which Liz questions whether Julia is really "moving to lesbania" or just enjoying a sojourn there. I don't know who died and made Liz keeper of the toaster ovens, but I'm sure I'll tune in — hands poised to cover my eyes — to see how it all unfolds. Submitted by on November 13, 2007 - 12:36pm. |

me too
I'm worried about the handling of the storyline too... but I guess we'll see. A bad story is better than no story I guess:p What I found weird about last weeks episode is that there is the emediate assumption by everyone that Julia is a lesbian. Why can't she be bisexual? Not that I'd mind if she suddenly discovers she's a lesbian, it can happen of course. I'm still very excited about the new storyline and can't wait what happens!

Just for this season...
I'm a tourist to Nip/Tuck. I'd never watched it and now that I've seen one episode, I can safely say that few things in this world would make me see that show, and (un)fortunately, Portia in a lesbian storyline is one of them. I just try to ignore men's bare butts and all Julian McMahon's lines. I don't know what it is about him that irks me so much, but ever since the first time he was on Charmed I have disliked him. No offense to him personally, though, he might be a really nice guy, you never know.
So I hope this storyline doesn't turn out to be included in a "Worst Lesbian TV Moments" edition of Who Thought THAT was a Good Idea in the future. I would be very disappointed if it did.

One Thing Bothers Me..
I'd like this storyline a lot more if Portia and Joely didn't look so eerily similar.
It totally weirds me out.
They don't look alike

Portia's first love scene with a woman ....
I hate NIP/TUCK and only started watching it again because Portia is on it.
in the third episode that just aired yesterday (11/13), they actually showed Portia in bed with another woman. The scene was surreal to me because here was a gorgeous actress who had always played STRAIGHT, who I had always admired every since Ally McBeal, had a very public outing because of her gay relationship with Ellen, who was then hired to play a lesbian on the very notorious NIP/TUCK.
Wow.
Words can't express how delighted I was to actually see a beautiful gay woman playing a lesbian on TV. Portia was so tender, playful and romantic in her part. I was also flabbergasted that Portia agreed to be on this very lewd show and would be performing sex scenes especially since she said (in the Advocate about two years ago) that she never wanted to kiss anyone again on screen and definitely would not do nudity for a part. Talk about a complete reversal!!!
Despite Portia's flip flopping on those two issues, I am happy to say I can hardly wait to see more of Portia playing a sexy and romantic gay woman, who actually does the deed!!! I just hope I don't suffocate before this happens (watching her do a real graphic love scene) because I have to put a pillow over my face every time the two male doctors are frak and fondle anything that gets within an inch of their dicks .... Really, I literally screamed in shock and horror when the supposedly nice doctor put his finger up an 18 year old woman's vajaja to see if it was 'intact'. This scene was beyond titiillation and in fact was PURE PORN!!! The scene was so incredibly lewd, gross and completely inappropriate, I wanted to pass out from embarrassment. Yea gads!!!
But getting back to Portia (because that's all I've been thinking about for the last 24 hours) -- I honestly felt that her role so far on NIP/TUCK is one of the most tender and nuanced I'd ever seen Portia perform. Portia always seemed to gravitate toward bitch goddess or bitch goddess comedic roles but not the overly drramatic roles --
Well, in NIP/TUCK, there is Portia was crawling out from under the sheets, after trying to please her girlfriend, huskily telling she lovea her, kissing her girlfriend, and then asking her girlfriend to MARRY HER! SWOON!!!!!!!!!! I can hardly wait to see more of Portia!!! And when she quirked her lips in that angsty little way, looking so exposed and vulnerable with her lady love, it felt so real to me -- unlike the 40 other lesbian movies I've seen. Portia, kudos to you!!!!!!!!

Nip-tuck rant... blah!
I didn't watch it until I found out about the lovely Portia, but it managed to be yet another stifling disappointment. I got so angry... Now, usually I don't make it a point to yell at the television, but somehow they managed to taint the entire concept of lesbian sex by having some twisted ass mug the "lesbians" gunpoint and demand it, making even me almost feel dirty in the process, and so of course the wimpy insecure one is left to "fend for herself" while the actual lesbian (who for some reason is supposed to act all macho or something) flakes out and leaves the "maybe-gay" to butch it up a bit. So of course the "maybe-gay" is "traumatized" by the whole incident and to reestablish her comfort zone, calls in her super-machoist ex husband (one of them anyway...) and has him teach her to shoot a gun. Because, you know, a woman just wouldn't be able to teach a woman correctly, it had to be her annoying ex in a chauvinistic gesture of masculinity. At this point I'm thinking it couldn't get any worse... until BOOM, there she is, back in the big strong manly arms of the douche who taught her to shoot... So yeah, 2 points here. One, a woman can't learn to defend herself independently, and two, once you have the penis, there's no going back... right? >.< I know I can't be the only one completely offended by this turn of events, and I've only been watching the show for three weeks. *sigh*
Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, right after that episode I saw a skit on Frank TV (my cousin insisted that we watch it... personally I was still to riled to be amused) where President Clinton managed to seduce Ellen Degeneres and sway her vote towards Hilary...... My cousin told me that God was giving me a sign (he's always giving me hell for my supposed upcoming journey TO hell) and I told him it was more like God giving me the finger... hah...
Sorry to rant.
