TV alert: "Lipstick Jungle"

I'm not sure whether this is an alert or a warning, really. Lipstick Jungle, the new show from another Sex and the City alum, premieres tonight on NBC. (The other show from a SATC alum is Cashmere Mafia. But you knew that.)

The reviews haven't been great so far. Here's one choice snippet from The Oregonian:

... just beneath Lipstick Jungle's swank veneer lies, well, nothing. Cliches and abstractions. Vague gestures in the direction of neo-feminism. All of which you've seen before, just never quite as lame as it is this time around.

Well. The critics don't seem to agree, though, on whether Cashmere or Lipstick is the superior of the pair. I'll confess to being intrigued by Brooke Shields, maybe just because I know she once had the privilege of kissing Cherry Jones. But I doubt she'll be enough to hold my interest — not that anything on Cashmere Mafia is holding my interest lately, either.

Why is Sex and the City the gold standard for female-centric TV, anyway? Surely Cagney & Lacey, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Popular and Maude deserve more praise when it comes to female, even feminist, characters. Not to mention The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman, but I think they broke the mold with that one.

    the first 2 episodes...

... are painfully boring - no chemistry between the ladies - you just don't feel like they are even friends much less lifelong ones. however by the third episode, their on-screen chemistry seems to pick up and perhaps the storylines will find their way as well.

    I am done

with Cashmere Mafia. The moment when Alicia said she was pregnant, I cursed at the television and turned it off. Why? Why the f*** can we not have a lesbian on tv that isn't pregnant? Or doesn't have a partner who is pregnant? Or isn't trying to find a donor? This couple had so much potential and it all just fizzled in that one scene. If Alicia turns out to have just had really bad indigestion, maybe I will attempt to watch it again. Maybe.

    Me too

For what it's worth, me too...

It wasn't just that she was pregnant that bothered me--I wouldn't have minded seeing how they handled the situation (it would've meant one more lesbian, right?)--but the sleeping with the playwright and then Alicia being okay with it?

Oh hell to the naw. Never again.

Then again, the ratings for the show have been so absymal that I don't think anybody will be watching anymore because the show's going to be cancelled.

    Give Cashmere Mafia a break...

First of all, Alicia is pregnant in the story because...well...the ACTRESS is pregnant and her condition occured AFTER the pilot was shot, but before the series was picked up. You want her to hide behind couches??? Cause seriously, a couch in the room would crimp ANY kind of good bedroom scenes that I'm still hopeful to see.

Second, I know some women who didn't come out as at least BI until they were in their 30's or older and yes, they did the back and forth thing too. Much to our loose social group's dismay actually. And even one gal that was engaged to a man (but didn't marry him) was in a long term relationship with a woman, only to go back to dating both men and women. She's BI!!! That's how it goes. My thinking is that Caitlin is doing what some newly out women do. Behave in a confusing manner. I for one like how the story is going in general (could have passed on the baby shower...but that was setting up Alicia pregnancy stuff). Now if at any point down the road it becomes apparent that the character isn't going to ever date women again...well I'd be disappointed for sure.

Third, I like the other characters, but mostly the way they interact with each other. This primarily a dramedy...the wouldn't be any drama or comedy if it was a boring girl meets girl and goes home to nest...and raise the baby...and never confront this coming out process. And I've got to say, despite everything I love me some Bonnie Somerville and Lucy Lui. They are very entertaining and WAY fun to watch regardless of who they're interacting with on the show.

    something clever's picture

    Okay...

I guess in the 23.5 seconds of screen time that Alicia actually had thus far, I didn't have time to notice that the actress playing her was pregnant.

    Still don't like it.

I agree with pecola: "but the sleeping with the playwright and then Alicia being okay with it?

Oh hell to the naw. Never again."

    Testify!

Going "back and forth" is one thing, but cheating is another.

(And it was a bridal shower, not a baby shower, btw.)

    My bad...

With all the sperm talk I forgot what the party was celebrating...lol I can understand why you'd think it's bad form for Alicia to forgive Caitlin's indiscretion so easily. Although, I think that issue could have been an opportunity for some good lesbian processing, I kinda think that whole part of the story was added to deal with the actress's pregnancy (also, she's looks big now due to the length of time that passed between the pilot and this last episode. Not to mention we haven't seen much of her body prior to the form fitting dress in this episode, that she pointed out in her line about deciding what to wear). But I do think the going back and forth between men and women is still a really good issue to work through (could have been a bit better, though) and if they're not an established exclusive couple, then it's not cheating.

    I kind of agree

Not only was the cheating wrong but the way it occurred was adolescent at best.

I mean these women are touted to be the most powerful women in New York City. Do you know what that means? It means that they would be more inclined to act like Juliet than like a coward crawling her way out of a restuarant to cheat on her girlfriend.

Look I know women who have one iota of the power these women claim to have and they are cutthroat believe me. But it's almost like the producers don't want you to see what really happens to high powered women in business.

TheWeyrd1, I agree with all your points.

And I love me some Lourdes Benedicto.

    No break from me

If an actress becomes pregnant while filming, nothing says the producers HAVE TO RETAIN HER. She should have been written out of the script so we were not saddled with another tired old storyline because some straight actress got knocked up.
    TheWeyrd1's picture

I think...contracts say they have to retain her...

And probably something along the lines of good chemistry...but I could be wrong.
    Niderrah's picture

    They could do better....

The plot for Alicia and Caitlin just plain sucks! I could of came up with a much better story line for them....The begining had some potenial then it got chop-n-screwed...This episode definately pissed me off....First they make Alicia strong and confidant and then she's like ..........that????? I don't get it.....Sadly I'll probably still watch the show.....

    You mean Cashmere or Lipstick?

Cashmere Mafia would be so much better if Caitlin could get her fair share of screen time. The pregnancy thing is really frustrating, but at least it's understandable because of the actress. But did you see how big she was? It's crazy that Caitlin didn't know. If we could see her story develop than there would be more than the simple fact that there is another pregnant lesbian on tv. Because that's really all she is. There's not enough screen time for a story -- just for the facts.

Anyone know how many more episodes of Cashmere Mafia are left before they run out?

    lezxotic's picture

    How many more episodes?

There are 2 more episodes and I only know that Alicia is scheduled for 6 so I don't know what happens next.

    yep

    Thanks for the correction

So what will become of team AliCait?

Every week I post my mini synopsis and review of Caitlin and Alicia's saga on my website. Usually each review ends with me lambasting the writers and others about the poor story arc.

No source if safe from my acid review.

So given the fact that Alicia's ex shows up in the next episode, and considering that Alicia and Caitlin were never given sufficient onscreen time to build their story, combined with the fact that Caitlin has met and already slept with Sam I'd pretty much say that the writing is on the wall as to what is going to happen to the Caitlin and Alicia story arc. Rest In Peace Team AliCait.

    BOO@lipstick jungle...SO FAR

I've never went to the refrigerator so much during a tv show

Where was the charisma and charm in the characters?  Where was the chemistry between the actresses?  There was alot going on in this episode without any clear direction and explaination.  I abandoned CM in hope LJ would fix my SATC cravings that weren't being fullfilled!  I am convinced writers and networks need to leave the SATC formula alone, it cannot clearly be duplicated ever again.

But mercy-I'll give it one more week

lipstick jungle has nothing on CASHMERE MAFIA...

why?! because cashmere mafia has LUCY LIU (enough said).

and bonnie summervile is just icing on the lucy liu cake.

brooke shields doesn't do anything for me.

    Ditto!...

Only to the Lucy Liu and Bonny Summerville part.  I think Brooke Shields is okay, but she's my dad's crush so that makes it kinda weird.  Plus, she sometimes appears on Hannah Montana.

Open to all of life's possibilities...

    Bonnie Summerville could be

Bonnie Summerville could be her own cake if she could get some damn screen time. As for icing . . . Alicia should be the icing on the Caitlin cake (that didn't sound as weird in my head) . . . hey, a girl can dream, right?

    Not cool

It's just not cool that the writers got all the lesbian viewers on board by creating a lesbian storyline, which, to be honest, isn't very well done..

Now that we're all watching, Caitlin can go back to men...

    Not Cool!

    lezxotic's picture

What's even more not cool is...

Afterellen.com constantly reassuring readers that the storyline was going to be handled responsibly just because TPTB were lied to by whomever they are supposedly connected with. Creating a responsible storyline DOES not mean that the viewers expected a happy ending either so I don't want to see a response from the editor stating that she never said that.

What's also not cool is the way the writers on this site are now distancing themselves from their own words.

Look the readers are intelligent, so this site needs to be straightforward and engage in some honest online journalism or admit that its just another publicity machine.

Cashmere Mafia Lesbian Storyline is so boring!

When i've seen the first episodes of cashmere mafia i thought, wow abc has finaly arrived in the new century, but this lesian storyline between caitlin and alicia sucks! what kind of a storyline is this? two or three harmless kisses between caitlin and alicia and than the pregnancy? hello abc, this is so unrealistic and has nothing to do with the real lesbian life! so come on stop this crapp!
    lezxotic's picture

What kind of lesbian storyline is this?

A non-existent ;esbian storyline is the kind it is. It appears that the writers intended all along to have Caitlin return to men. I'd be surprised if anything different occurs. That said CM still beats Lipstick Jungle by a mile.

Lipstick Jungle have changed some ot the male actors!

I've seen earlier a pilot scene on youtube, but after i've seen yesterday first episodes of the lipstick jugle, i figured out that they have changed some of the male actors! in those pilot scenes i've seen on youtube, julian sands was playing the husband of kim raves roll, and a hole different type of a guy was playing the role of brooke shields husband, now it's the british actor paul blackthorne who's playing it! they have also chaged the actor who playes kim raves one night stand, so what's up with all these changes? And how crazy must that be for all those fine actresses to play the same part twice with all those different actors! yeah that's american television! hire and fire!

Maybe because i wasn't expecting as much from LJ as i was from CM i wasn't dissapointed. I actually thought the show was better ( minus the fact that CM has a lesbian storyline). For one thing most of the time they dressed better. It wasn't over the top like CM and i liked how they balanced their work life storylines with their personal life storylines.

Kim Raver's character makes some really good points about women in the work world i.e the having babies issue . and Brooke Shield's character was basically Zoe's storyline done better. For some reason the storylines were more relatable. It's not the best thing on tv but was okay.

Also did any body else just think Kim Raver was channelling an older Sarah Michelle Geller. I could not get that thought out of my head.

    lezxotic's picture

Really You Thought That LJ Was Better?

Even though the women were portrayed as emotional crybabies? That's so stereotypical, and incongruent with them being high powered executives.
    pecola's picture

    Agreed.

The best scene of CM thus far was the closing scene in the latest episode where the lawyer tried to hand Juliet a tissue to wipe away what he presumed were tears and she defiantely said "who's crying?"

Meanwhile, on Lipstick Jungle, all the women are crying, all the time.

    forgive the length

i agree the lindsay price character cried alot, but after she's had a bad day. when she's done she gets back on the horse. she got a bad review for her fashion line yes she's allowed to cry. She's basically told her work isn't good enough by the Tokoyo lady and yes she cries in her hotel room, after she's done with the meeting.I would think the fact that she does all this in private , where she can and i have certainly done a time or too is much better than doing it in public.

Kim Raver's character is going through a troubling time in her marriage and yes she cries because she feels guilty about the affair but you don't see her crying in a meeting with her boss. She handles it well and she's well aware of how women are discriminated against in the work place.she's the one i most admire in the three.

and brooke shields character she's Zoe but more frazzled.

So long as none of them cried in an unprofessional situation i'm okay with the crying. Having said that i've always said Juliet was one of my favourite characters on CM. i loved the scene when she refuses the tissue. That's Juliet. She doesn't show weakness in public.

I'm not saying its a great show i'm just saying it shows a more balanced view. CM deals mainly with caitlin's personal life (when she's dealt with) and Juliet's too. You get to see Zoe have a slutty/ambitious assistant but i haven't seen her face any discrimination and mia i'm just distracted by her hair most of the time.
