Tina Fey gets things done on SNLSometimes my expectations are way too high. Like for Bionic Woman — my expectations for that were way, way too high. But I expected great things from Tina Fey's hosting gig on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, and I wasn't even a little bit disappointed.
She was funny, adorable and awesome. Let's start with her monologue: I don't even know why that "old movie" voice worked, but it really did. Does she still think she's not really an actress? It's time to accept that you absolutely are, Tina. Of course, the highlight was her rant about Hillary Clinton. Even if you're not for Hillary, you have to agree that the Starsky joke was hilarious. And you have to love the whole idea of "bitch is the new black." (For a printed summary of all that, read the New York Times politics blog.) But setting aside the awesomeness for a moment, let's get back to that "even if you're not for Hillary" thing. Has Tina's endorsement swayed you at all? Or how about Dorothy Snarker's endorsement? Or how about the fact that this may be your only chance to vote for a woman for president in your lifetime? OK, maybe just in my lifetime. But it's historic any way you look at it. So. If you want to get things done, vote for Hillary. Even if people call you (and her) a bitch.
And I vote for Tina to be the queen of the f---ing universe. She proves, over and over again, that funny is sexy, and smart is even sexier.
P.S. If you've come across a hi-res version of that first picture of her in the tie, please post a link! Submitted by on February 25, 2008 - 9:55am. |

Tina Fey
Is she awesome or what?
That Hillary rant absolutely killed.
deal with it...
I couldn't agree with you more scribe. NO ONE does Weekend Update like Tina Fey! I'm a little disappointed in myself though, I forgot to set the DVR. :(
I was able to catch it at work, where I was the ONLY one in the room laughing. I laughed out loud anyway.
I especially like some of the comments I read on the SNL website from the people who are upset she went "political". Like that has never happened before on a comedy sketch show.....
Gotta Love...
You have to love Tina Fey being politically savvy for all the right reasons, not to mention (although I will) she openly endorsed Clinton!
:-)
Though I'm a little disappointed that they didn't refernce 30 Rock at all, the rest of it was fantastic, and, might I add... THE TIE!!! Oh... the tie.
((sigh))

the hilary rant is the greatest thing I've ever seen. Tina rocks!
Imagine the PMS
Why?
Vote for someone because they are a certain gender or color? What happened to voting for the best candidate based on what she or he can do for our country? I mean to vote for Hillary just because she is female is stupid. To vote for Obama because he is black is stupid. To vote for a candidate because a celebrity endorses them is stupid and mindless. Oh and in case you're wondering I'm voting for Obama.
LOL! You just stripped away
LOL! You just stripped away the only reasons why to vote for Obama.
The man is all talk nothing more. sorry.

I Don't Get It...
Why are so many otherwise-intelligent people endorsing Clinton over Obama? Is it really just attachment politics like newjhk13 suggests or is there something terribly, awfully obvious I've missed? Obama's policies are better, he seems to have more integrity, his ideas are fresher, so what's with the endorsements?
Has anybody seen the HRC Q&A with these two candidates? Clinton basically says, sorry, you just need to keep waiting at the back of the bus. At least Obama seems to be willing to move a little further, even though he acknowledges that such a stance is politically problematic for him.
I'm a big, ol' lezzie and I'm voting for the person I think will improve my situation, not for the person who has more in common with me. Go Barack!
I think I get it.
I think people, myself included, think Obama rarely talks about his policies. Therefore, many people wouldn't know if his policies are better unless they frequented his website. He is a great orator and he is an intelligent man. He even has a great website (I have been there many times). However, experience is something he is lacking and he doesn't help his case by suggesting everyone just go to his website to learn more about him and his policies. If he feels so strongly about his beliefs and plans for our nation, then he should share this information with the tens of thousands of supporters at his rally. I am pretty sure not everyone at those rallies have access to the Internet.
Honestly, I think he will be a great president... for 2012 or 2016. The incoming president will inherit a big flaming pile of dirty, stinky mess to work through. While Hillary has been forthcoming in her plans to clean up after George W. Bush, Obama has been running on his ability to hope and the need for change. But this country needs more. I want someone in office with at least a full-term in the Senate. By the way, why has everyone ignored his promise to stay in his Senate seat for the entire length of his term? This is something that has bothered me since his announcement to run for President and it continues to do so. However, that alone isn't the reason I don't support Obama in the primary. Hillary's ideas for health care are more promising and, as a student of medicine and a patient, this is a very important issue.
I agree completely!
It has baffled me to see the gay community largely back Clinton. I like her, for the most part, but when it comes down to gay issues, Barack destroys her, IMO. Last night, I finally got mad and wrote on the subject. Ironically, almost all of my gay friends are Hillary supporters, and I hate starting political fights with them, so this was my outlet.
Check out my blog for the post. Feedback/opinions/arguments all welcome.

Having said all that, I still think Tina's rant for Hillary was quite entertaining. ;)
SNL
Well, it was bound to happen eventually....Scribe and I disagree. It's a sad, sad day in America.
I love Tina Fey (esp. in that tie--wow), but I didn't think the SNL return was that funny. It was like every other episode of SNL pre-strike--funny at some points, not funny at others and funny until they draw the sketch out for way too long at other points (the opening debate sketch, in particular). I imagine SNL writers are hampered considerably by The Colbert Report and The Daily Show, who get the material (and usually the jokes) before they do.
As for supporting Hillary Clinton, I don't and I think the whole notion that I should support Hillary because she's a woman makes about as much sense as saying that black people should support Barack Obama because he's black--that is, none at all. Moreover, what should black women do? Vote their race or their gender? C'mon, now...support the candidate who represents the issues you care about and the Democrats best chance of taking back the White House...identity politics are so old school.
Now, when I get this response (this may be your only chance to vote for a woman for president in your lifetime), I wonder where people have been. There was a woman who ran for president in 2004 (Carol Moseley Braun)--sans Gloria Steinem, not many feminists jumped on that train--and, even if Sen. Clinton doesn't win the nomination, there's a good possibility that there will still be a woman on the ballot: Kathleen Sebelius, perhaps, as Obama's VP, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, perhaps, as McCain's VP and/or Cynthia McKinney as the presidential nominee of the Green Party.
Sidenote: You didn't mention him, but what about Mike Huckabee? Regardless of what you think about his politics (and I loathe most of them), Huckabee's an affable guy and his comedic sensability has been one of the highlights of having to watch the Republican debates. Maybe he'll be able to parlay his extended stay on the national stage into a SNL hosting gig...I mean, SNL writers can't let the story about him using a popcorn popper to make fried squirrel in his college dorm room go unmocked, can they?

OMG I'm in love
I've always loved Tina Fey, but that Hillary rant was the best thing EVER!! I'm so glad you posted it, because it made my day. (I totally forgot she was on SNL Saturday night.)
It's weird because I kind of thought she was for Obama, just because Liz Lemon mentions him so much on 30 Rock. Of course, the SNL anchor woman is also just another persona, not Tina herself, but since she delivered the speech with such gusto, I'm going to assume she agreed with it.
In response to AlphaMama
I'm a number of contradictions, as many of my generation are: a bone-deep FesbianLeminist (sorry, late 70's joke), a Republican who first voted for Nixon but hasn't voted for a Republican for president since, an ethnic Native American and a Jew by choice.
But my support for Clinton over Obama has to do with a lot of things other than her being a woman, which is just the icing on the cake. Obama talks a good game, no argument, and has some good ideas. But his record indicates someone hesitant to take action if he's not sure it's going to be what people want him to do. His voting record is shameful - I'd rather have someone running this country who is willing to take action in an effort to do the right thing than someone hamstrung by their own indecision or vaccilating over what the public wants.

voting for a woman
yes, thanks for saying that
Snarker really does say it all. And for my more serious thoughts on the matter (this was ultimately a blog post about SNL, after all), you can see my comment on one of the Visible Vote posts.
What it really comes down to for me is that I want a president who already knows the system, inside and out, for better and for worse. Because then, with that knowledge from within, change can be truly effected. And Hillary has been tested -- so very tested -- and is still standing.

Another awesome post on the subject, also at VisibleVote08, is http://visiblevote08.logoonline.com/2008/02/04/vanasco-why-im-voting-for...
I was writing a comment myself and realized I couldn't say it better than Jennifer did. I will add one thing, though. Last week, I went to a Hillary rally and was almost overwhelmed with a sense of pride and history. She is direct, specific and looks people in the eye when she talks. She's not about hope, she's about action. I am more confident than ever that she is the right person to be president.

fun monologue
I missesd the beggining of the Snl sketch but i caught the 'women's news' section and i couldn't help LMAO. when i heard the 'biches get things done' and 'bitch is the new black' i thought instant classic.
On the political front, i might regret saying this, but as an outside looking in i can't help but wonder if Obama is going to be the right choice. Not to say that either he or Clinton aren't great in their own right or that he can't get the job done, i just wonder if this Obama adoration is going to last. You hear all this stuff about his message of hope and that 'feeling' he incites and how he's a breath of fresh air, but is that really going to last? Is that going to win an election? When it comes down to the general election are people going to say hey that was a nice idea but time for the real work and we need someone with experience and vote for old guy McCain? There's all this support from young voters now, it's like a fad or something and as fads go they don't last that long? Are the young voters really going to go out and vote in a general election or will they have moved on to something new? Is his speeches and message like a popular song you love and listen to constantly until a month later you're over it? Is Obama just interesting because he's new and then he's gonna get boring? All this occured to me because there was this news item about the so called 'Obama girl' who didn't vote and then you have all the celebrity support and the 'yes we can' video but if i remember correctly there was a whole celebrity rock the vote campaign and did it really work?
Not to say there aren't people who are genuine supporters and that they won't go out and vote, but will that be enough to win?
I'm glad...
b!tch
identity politics
And aren't a lot of racists (be they white, Latino, whatever) refusing to support Barack just because he's black?
Is "identity politics" really a thing of the past for the average voter? I really wish it were, but I suspect it's not.
Probably So, But..
Well...I don't doubt that you're right to some regard.
Are there men that won't vote for Hillary because she's a woman or people who won't vote for Barack because he's black? Probably so.
Are those sexists and racists as large a part of the electorate as they used to be? I don't think so. I look at the success of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as some evidence that our nation's infatuation with identity politics is receding. Hell, I look at the fact that the RNC's doing polling and focus groups around exactly how sexist and racist they can be in their attack ads for the general election as evidence of some progress.
But while I appreciate that there are some people who won't vote for Obama or Clinton for the aforementioned reasons, I also think those people are crazy. I think that to live in the times in which we do and still carry around racist and sexist ideologies is crazy...and I think replicating the thought process of these crazy people is not good idea, even if the end might be more amicable.
As a whole, though, I think I'm just scared of identity politics and how it has the potential to come back and bite the progressive movement in the ass. The groups that will inevitably do the most damage to the cause of women and people of color will be women and people of color. It's the story of the pharisees all over again--you'll always be destroyed by people who look like you (*cough*Log Cabin Republicans*cough*).
Case and point: George W. Bush has assembled the most diverse cabinet in this country's history, but it has not resulted in policies that have impacted communities of color in a positive way. But if you reduce yourself to making identity arguments, rather than policy ones, Bush doesn't look as bad.

lady business
It irks me how the identity politics question only ever gets posed to women. Men never get asked, “Are you voting for your candidate because you share the same sexual organs?” Only women get accused of and admonished for voting with their lady bits. Look, clearly women have no problem voting for people of the opposite gender, we’ve been doing it for 88 years (that being the amount of time we’ve been allowed to vote, compared to men who’ve had the ballot all 200+ years of our nation’s existence.) To deny that identity gets rolled up into our political choices is ridiculous, just as it is ridiculous to say that that's all we base our votes on.
p.s. Tina Fey with the axe cracks me up ever time I see it. I love that it's pink.

hehehe Sorry, I had to quote that...so many jokes going through my mind with that one...it short-circuited for a moment!
After hearing Tina shout that "bitch is the new black"...I knew two things...I cannot heart Tina any more if I tried...and I will soon be putting that phrase on a tee.
:)
Ah, hell...
I like Clinton and Obama. For me, gender is the tie breaker. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I will happily vote for either Democratic nominee in the presidential election. But if I have the chance to cast my ballot for a woman, I will feel...frankly, FUCKING AWESOME!
*edit* And, Tina Fey is a living doll! (That's something my mother would say! :D)
*another edit* And, "living doll"...that's kind of creepy! :o
I agree...
The women who vote for Hillary are not casting a ballot JUST because she is a woman. That IS an added bonus, however ;-) And GASP, SHOCK AND DISBELIEF...This SNL was not any funnier than episodes during the writer's strike?! Tina Fey is one of THE BEST female comedian/writers we have. Give the woman a little credit and well deserved respect. This SNL had Tina Fey...it WAS BETTER!!!
HAHA!
tina fey rocks!
saturday was the forst time i've watched snl in forever all because of tina fey. it just hasn't been the same since she left. i was kind of hoping that she would do all of weekend update and kick out seth meyers lol
Hillary on Ellen!!!!
Went to see Hillary speak at GW University tonight. She was so amazing! I've lived in DC most of my life and I can't remember ever I feeling excited, even starstruck, by a politician. Anyways she definately mentioned Saturday Night Live in her speech. And as if it couldn't get any better, Ellen showed up doing a live broadcast!! She and Hillary discussed the evils of glitter. It was too funny. I'm trying to get the word out, if you didn't already plan to watch Ellen tomorrow, try to catch it. I promise it will be worth it to see the lighter side of our Hillary.

I WAS THERE!!
Probably the greatest day of my life. My best friend had tickets and I went with her. Tina was hilarious, obviously. And 1000 times hotter in real life. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm bragging, but I was just so happy, SNL is my favorite show and I LOVE Tina. There was a moment in between scenes where she was just waiting around, and she just turned to my friend and I and just said "Hi".
I nearly wet myself.
Tina Fey= Goddess.
