Tina and tennis: What's not to love?I've been loving every minute of the U.S. Open. (OK, maybe not Serena's pouty press conference, but never mind that for now.) From Marion Bartoli's insanely intricate serve preparation — isn't she kind of adorable, by the way? — to Venus Williams' intense battle with the acrobatic Jelena Jankovic, it's been a great couple of weeks so far.
But this post isn't really about tennis. It's about Tina. Because my favorite part of the U.S. Open broadcasts has been the new American Express commercial featuring Tina Fey. Every time I think I couldn't possibly love her more, she does something like this.
"Does Mama have to do everything around here?" And obviously, use the other flute. Fey's American Express print ad is just as delightful. Behold the bevy of Post-Its on her bulletin board! It seems like this might really be her office. Yeah, she's practically perfect in every way. (Just to bring this full circle, during last night's U.S. Open coverage there was a random snippet of Fey talking about playing tennis in school, on a team she called the "Bad News Bears of tennis." How much swooning can I do in one fortnight? It's getting embarrassing.) Submitted by on September 6, 2007 - 4:58pm. |

Love the US Open!
lesbian without borders
Indeed
While in high school, my sister got really into watching tennis because of Andre Agassi. When I was in high school, I got really into tennis because of Lindsay Davenport (and Martina Hingis). If I didn't know I was gay before tennis, I certainly new after.
But this post is really about Tina. There's a lot of Tina-gushing on this blog, but that's fine by me. "Every time I think I couldn't possibly love her more.... Yeah, she's practically perfect in every way." Indeed. Totally agree. You said it. Ditto. That'll put marzipan in your pie plate, Bingo.
No tennis for me
TSN refuses to air the primetime matches when they're playing live; instead there's hockey. Canada, hockey, yes but tennis! It's more interesting, well at least to me. I wanted to watch the Henin/Serena, Federer/Roddick, Venus/Jankovic matches but missed them all.
Re: Tina. I love her. She plays the flute? Awesome. She has cute handwriting too.
Justine vs. Venus
Anyone else totally looking forward to the Venus / Justine match? Venus did an interview where she was talking about how personally she had taken Serena's defeat and how she had blood on her mind.
When those William sisters get determined about something, blood is usually quickly spilt. Just think about Serena/Justine at the French Open a few years ago and then the resounding defeat of Justine in Wimbledon.
Grudge match anyone?
i love tennis:)
Venus
Just because they're sisters...
"I wasn't happy with the result at all, to say the very least," Venus said. "I was sad that Serena lost because I didn't like to see her so upset. I definitely have to try to win for the Williams." From a Melbourne newspaper... The Age.
What's interesting is that although the head to head stats are heavily in V's favour (7-1) J & V haven't played since 2003! It's rare for two players who are fairly high up in the rankings to go so long without playing each other. But they have both had a fair amount of time off injury and mystery illness wise. Should be interesting anyway. Venus is sounding confident, but I'm guessing there'll also be a few butterflies. It's easier to beat someone that you play regularly, despite how often you've seen the person play. Four years is a long time in tennis years. Since then J's won six grand slams.
Martina Navratilova on TV
FYI, Martina Navratilova will be playing tonight--any minute now (10:20 p.m. Eastern)--in a "Champions" match vs. Jana Novotna.
Doesn't look like they're televising it (grrr...) but you can watch the live score via the US Open site.

wow
Wow, her post-its are really….neat and organized. I've never seen a bulletin board so immaculately arranged.
Dammit. Now I hafta clean up my desk :(
But speaking of good tennis/AmEx ads, Johnny Mac: “there’s a chance that ball DID hit the line. You’re not evil!”
Well, it was good the first 2 times I saw it. Now it’s kind of annoying.
I <3 Tina
Fey
I'm nerd enough to admit my
I'm nerd enough to admit my latest pair of glasses are exactly like Tina's.
The lady at the store said it was pretty much the first time someone brought a pic of the frame to be made =P.
And did I read "bat skeleton"?
Boy unusual and gift are sure under and over statements there...

Soup!
I absolutely adore that her impulse purchase was a case of soup, rather than a fancy car, a $10,000 bag, or an island. Way to be down to earth.

Haven't seen any of the US Open here in the UK :-( gutted Jelena got beat by Venus.. you gotta love her cos she always looks like she's enjoying herself on the court rather than geting all stroppy and making those ridiculous noises that other players do when they hit the ball...
Saw her interview after the match, and she said the crowd were shouting "we love your smile Jelena" and she was like "cheers but its not gonna help me return Venus' serve!" lol
Jelena
Damn, i was soooo pissed when Jelena lost (mostly, because of the time diference it was aired live at 1am and lasted till 4am :)... she was way better, but Venus' serve was almost flawless *sigh* it will be better next year... I do have to add that draw was quite weird; i mean, how can it be possible that in one half we have Henin, Jankovic, Bartoli, both Williams sisters, Ivanovic and Dementieva while in other half only Sharapova and Kuznetseva... not quite fair.
and, also have to add, Novak Djokovic will be playing tomorrow in finale!!!!
GO NOVAK!!!!
Yey, another Jelena fan...
And another Jelena fan...
I was pissed that she lost, too, because I thought she could have won it. Not easily, but she was there and with a little more agressive play rather than defensive play she had Venus.
But to the original post, I wish someone would talk more about Serena and her total lack of sportsmanship. From what I understand (from the reporter guy on USA Network who brought the press conference to my attention) her behavior at that press conference was the same as it always is/was/will be. "Lucky shots" from the world's #1 player? As he said, "You mean 'winners'?!" It's pathetic that she continually gets some sort of pass, especially among women, for being someone we should all laud, when she's actually a self-absorbed, whining, childlike person, who can NEVER give the other player any credit for what they've done. I don't get it.
During the match with Henin, I suspected we saw her call Henin "bitch" when Henin made her run hard during the prior point. My wife thought perhaps Serena was cursing "sonuva bitch," and yes, perhaps that was it. But all we saw was a closeup of Serena, getting ready to return serve, mouthing "bitch."
Maybe I'm simply of a generation when an athlete's attitude combined with their prowess was the stuff that a fan admired. Even McEnroe, with all of his brouhaha during a match, was a player who gave credit to others off the court. Or Martina, even!
So, yes, give me Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, MoMo, Billie Jean King, Martina, Sha'har Pe'er, Chris Evert, Mary Carillo, Mary Jo Fernandez, etc., etc., etc. -- women who love the sport and admire, and more importantly respect, players other than themselves who can play their guts out.
