The B-girl on "So You Think You Can Dance"

I'm an occasional viewer of So You Think You Can Dance — only occasional because host Cat Deeley bugs me and because sometimes the show is just too much work (must it really be two hours long?). But generally I like it because it focuses on a talent you can't really fake — there are no Sanjaya equivalents who get votes based on hair or image rather than skill.

One of the SYTYCD contestants recently caught my eye and has turned me into a regular viewer. Sara Kei VonGillern is a hip-hop dancer who lists snowboarding and writing among her hobbies.

Sara spent last summer in New York taking dance classes and hanging out with b-boys and b-girls. She is also part of a traveling hip-hop act: "Our show is called 'Monster Shop Bump’n' and it focuses on hip-hop and breaking dance styles with fun costume characters and positive hip-hop and soul music." But wait, there's more: Sara has a degree in public relations and loves design almost as much she loves dance. Isn't it annoying when people have that much energy?

Anyway, that's all fine and dandy, but the point of this post is that Sara recently krumped the hell out of SYTYCD. She was more gangsta (not to mention way sexier) than the guy named Jesus she was dancing with. And she's still on the show, but he isn't.

Yeah, I think Sara can dance — not that I know much about dance. I just know it's cool that the female contestants get to bust a move in jeans and T-shirts sometimes, as well as in heels and ball gowns. As judge Mary Murphy so often (and so loudly) says, wooooooooo!

    grrrl can dance

SYTYCD is the only show I watch faithfully. I love it, despite the fact that it's possibly the most hetero-obsessed show in the history of the world. I mean, how many times can the guys say that they started dancing because they realized that in dance, unlike football, you get to hang out with a lot of girls. We get it. We get it. You want us to think you're not gay. And Nigel is such a sexist, heterosexist pig. But the dancing is good.

I really like Sara. I love seeing a girl on the show who is a little outside the typical girly lyrical dancer mode. But I sort of doubt she'll last that much longer. Hope I'm wrong, though. Actually, I usually am wrong about who's going to leave, so maybe it's a good sign for her.

    Only reality show

It's the only reality show I can watch.....I saw that episode of SYTYCD and she was kick a$$.  Though it was a very sanitized/clean version of krumping it was still a fantastic routine and Sara's energy was unreal.  I loved it and her!  B-Girls rock!!

    They killed

it. She was definitely bump'n. I could tell she messed up a little on the pop up from the ground but she recovered pretty quickly so if you don't know much about krump or break dancing you can't tell. Out of a possible ten I give her a 9.5, the .5 is for recovery. Damn, she killed it!!

    Watered Down

That was a really watered down version of Krumping. Anybody who has Rize knows what I'm talking about. Last year's Krumping routine was much better.

    baby Nigel

Yeah, it was watered down, but at least it didn't scare Nigel. *rolling my eyes*

    dancing/martial arts

Erhm... Just how many martial arts movements are in that dance act?

The guy's first movement looks like something out of kung fu and the final swirl is definitely used in taekwondo. They are great technicists.

    Sabra

Is it just me or does anyone else's "gaydar" go off when you see Sabra?? Plus she constantly talks about her obsession with Ellen. Hmmmmmmmmmm
    ladyinthecanoe's picture

    You're not alone

I got a 'family' vibe from Sabra, too.  Nice if it's true -- she's a cute little thing.  :)

    Mia Michaels

OMG. How can you mention SYTYCD on AfterEllen and not mention choreographer Mia Michaels???  I'm not sure I love her current neo-mullet, but she is so frickin kewl that she is even pulling that ugly thing off. Yay Mia!

    scribegrrrl's picture

    you're right, Mia is hot

... I agree completely. My bad for not mentioning her. Actually, though, I think she deserves a blog post all her own, so maybe I'll work on that! :)

    yes

    Oh, how I like her!

Cat Deely's all right in my

Cat Deely's all right in my book if only for her wonky little nose.  :)

I love so many of the girls this year, it's hard to pick my favorite.  But I do dig Sara a lot and think she's done an awesome job in performing the styles she's not as familiar with.  I can't wait to see how she'll do in a Mia choreographed piece.
