No, Ro, don't go: Rosie is leaving The View

Rosie O'Donnell announced today that she will be leaving The View at the end of this season (she'll be on through mid-June).

Here's how the whole thing went down — on the screen and in my head (this is not an exact transcript; TMZ has the video):

Rosie: It's Wednesday, April 25th, and you know what that means? It's the day after Barbra Streisand's birthday. [giggles and murmurs; Barbara Walters puts her head in her hands] And there's also breaking news. I've decided ... we couldn't come to terms, so I've decided I'm not coming back next season, but I will co-host [etc. etc.] and don't be sad because I'll still be here, just not every day.
Elisabeth: Once a week?
Rosie: Maybe.
Barbara: You told us to be upbeat, but I'm not, I'm sad.

Then Barbara has something on her lip, so Rosie pulls it off. That was pretty!

Barbara makes it clear that she had nothing to do with the negotiations and that they haven't thought about a replacement because they thought Rosie was coming back.

Rosie: Will you miss me, Joy?
Joy: I'll tell you who's really sad. Donald Trump. He's on a ledge right now.

Barbara says Kelli's the one who's really sad, because now Rosie will be home for lunch every day. Ba-dum-bum.

Gosh, Rosie seems extremely light-hearted and happy about this, doesn't she? Well, I guess that's good, then. She's been kinda down lately, so I'm all for a change in mood.

Rosie and Barbara get all googly-eyed about each other and talk about how much they like and respect each other. Barbara makes that kissy face that kind of creeps me out. Before it can get even more uncomfortable, Rosie asks Elisabeth how she's feeling about the news.

Elisabeth: I think I'm in denial.

About so much, Elisabeth. So much.

But Elisabeth says, to her credit, that Rosie has been a great catalyst and has really sparked conversation. They all babble about confetti and giveaways and the things Rosie has done for the show.

The really big news of the Hot Topics is this: Barbara is not happy with President Bush today. His presence in NY prevented her from crossing the street to get to her own house.

Barbara: He is a president; he is not a king!

Rosie jokes that the habeas corpus stuff and the torture stuff can slide by, but if you barricade Barbara Walters, there will be hell to pay.

And then Rosie says that word one more time: "Impeach!" The floodgates are open: No reason to censor yourself now, Ro!

After the break, Elisabeth accidentally says she thinks Cheney would be a good candidate for 2008 (she meant to say McCain) and Rosie dramatically falls off her chair. And that, Rosie, is why we'll miss you.

And so is this: Later, they announce that Alec Baldwin will be on the show on Friday.

Joy: He's coming live. He was gonna do a phoner, but we said no.

Rosie says all she has to do is lob 'em in, and Joy hits 'em out. Barbara starts to say more about what Alec's going to do or say or something, and Rosie shushes her. She shushes Barbara Walters! It's going to be an interesting couple of months.

An AfterElton reader says there will be another announcement of some kind (check his blog here), so we'll let you know what else transpires.

    Thanks, Ro

I've had tears in my eyes throughout the show. I didn't realize how much Rosie's presence on the View has meant to me. It sounds a little hokey, I know. But Rosie's open discussions about the, well, normality of her family has been incredibly affirming. And anyone who can make the right-wing pundits so livid has to be doing something right..er...left...oh, you know what I mean. She's taken a lot of flack, much of it quite personal. But she hasn't shut up. And hopefully she will keep stirring things up in her next endeavor.

    Here's to you, Rosie. Thanks.

    Darn it.

I'm disappointed. I can understand her frustration though. I sometimes feel that all "Views" are enterained...except ours. Of course I don't always agree with her or her style but at least she was out there fighting the good fight. I hope she finds a new project to rejuvenate her without causing her too much stress or unhappines.  Thanks Ro for getting out there with sword and shield drawn.

    Not Surprised

Really, are any of us surprised? I think Rosie's time on the view was more of a publicity stunt and I remember thinking as such when I first heard she was joining the cast. Don't get me wrong, I've nothing against her, but she just seems to be in it for the publicity lately. Still, best of luck to her!

Well, no reason to watch the View now...

Okay, I never did watch, except on youtube. But still...
    Gobias Somecoffee's picture

    Meh

Like someone said upthread, I'm not surprised either.  With or without Rosie, that show is really annoying.  Too much babble and too much talking-over-each other.

I have to say I’m glad

I have to say I’m glad she’s gone. The “ching chong” thing really got to me.  It wasn’t so much the comments, as her refusal to acknowledge why they were so offensive.

i was hoping she'd stay on

i was hoping she'd stay on longer. i've been a fan of rosie since forever. the show is gonna suck without her. especially now that elisabeth's idiotic statements will go un-checked.

i don't understand people who think the show is too loud or they talk over each other too much. they are talking about personal opinions, of course they are gonna argue. i can hear them just fine.
    Gobias Somecoffee's picture

    Talking doesn't equate yelling

They can express their personal opinions without yelling and screaming.  Joy and Rosie are both extremely loud to the point where they are just shouting.  Then they proceed to talk over each other where it becomes a big mess.  Sure, it doesn't happen all the time but it does happen quite frequently, well back when I use to catch glimpses of the show.

    rosie

She is extremely controversial,,,i like her but sometimes her comments do get out of hand,,funny though.I also agree that Rosie has been saying what she is saying to only get more attention from the media,, i beleive thats the way it works,, u say or do something stupid and get caught on tape or audio and there you go,,u got your self more minutes of fame and after that your name will be recognizable..However,,,they need to think about their career and how it might be affected ,, for example there is this italian singer Tiziano Ferro which by the was he is a total ass i mean this guys music had been very succesful in Mexico, but after such stupid comment that he made on an italian interview criticizing the beauty of Mexican women,,, he's career dropped , the sales went down and all the Mexican radio and media stations dont play his music anymore,, they no longer want him in mexico because he said that "All Mexican women have mustaches" referring to us as ugly with mustache women.. So i beleive thats really an insult and Mexico dont want to support his music anymore,, he got what he deserved,, how did he not know that such comments like these would ruin his career, and it did so now he is like apologizing, and almost crying out to Mexico and all the women for forgiveness which i dont beleive because he waited like one week after to come out and apologize publicly(?)  only so his stupid music could get back in there.. I beleive nothing is going to be the same for him,, I am mexican and i do not have a mustache! Not going so far,, look what happend to his guy ISMUS, is that his name? ,, words can be very destroyful! becareful ladies.

    ice cream's picture

    I Also Think

That had Rosie remained doing what she was doing a long time ago - like making movies, such as A League Of Their Own and Now & Then, it would be much better for her. If you're going to make comments, go into politics where you're expected to open your mouth as often and as wide as you can. If not, why not stick at something you're surprisingly good at? Fame and fortune goes to your head. That's why, when I get published, it'll be for myself, not for anyone else and regardless of how I go, I'll keep my damned mouth shut. Of course, until then, I always wanted to be President...
    Riven2310's picture

    The View

is about hosts opening their mouths....a lot. Ironcially, for all the trashing Rosie has received for opening her mouth on the show, the show has increased in ratings since she joined.  And ratings is what advertisers want to see so they'll keep putting money into that show.  I don't always agree with Rosie on issues...including Alec Baldwin, he is pathetic and abusive.  But as far as Rosie being on The View and speaking her mind....it certainly hasn't hurt the show in it's pocket - it's helped. And if I were one of it's exec. producers, I'd make sure Rosie got a raise.

Btw, I was bored with The View before Rosie joined and have only bothered watching it whenever I can because of her.

One less actual lesbian on TV?

Dammit. I don't identify with her at all, but it still upsets me. Thank God Ellen is still on the air.
    onemorehour's picture

    rosie isn't saying stuff to

rosie isn't saying stuff to get media attention- maybe the attention of the american people though. she also doesn't need to shut up to protect her "career." she's rich and will be rich if she never works again. she's got nothing to lose by speaking out against republicans. every person has the right to say what they think. if you don't like what she's saying then you're obviously not doing anything to avoid it. take bill o'reilly, for example. i hate the guy and never want to hear a word come out of his mouth, so you know what i do? i never watch him. i haven't heard him speak in years. it's great.

    I am here to say...

...good riddance.  Her racist and ignorant comments have pulled her from my "not even on the radar" list to the "sh*t" list.
I can't stand her and I am glad she is leaving.
    NLL's picture

    Babs will regret it!

The View is officially ovah! The one good thing about this is that Walters will probably, FINALLY retire! WhooHoo!

Rosie will go on to bigger and better things, and make tons of money. Whether her detractors like it or not many of us like her, and want to watch her. :)

    Kaira's picture

    Huh?

Did they not want her on the show anymore or did she decide she didnt want in on it? Either move is bad. I mean the show got a ratings boost because of her and she got some time on the spotlight. She needs the View and they need her. *shrug* it was a good marriage. I dont think Rosie will get any farther than she is now. Her time in the sun has kinda faded... least to me that is lol

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

Diappointed: Bad Role Model for Women

Although I disagree with Rosie on almost eveything except family and gay/lesbian issues, and believe her to be one of the most obnoxious dykes in the country, I am profoundly disappointed.

Not only is it a blow for visibility (not all lesbians are nice like Ellen), but she is walking away from a fight--and Trump and O'Reilly will be the victors. This is what women do all too often, and is largely responsible for the gender gap in the work place.

    deja's picture

Catch 22 me if you can

Rosie is to the point where she's damned either way she jumps:  If she speaks her mind, she's villified for being insensitive, brash, obnoxious and ignorant, but if she walks away, then she's petty, selfish, greedy and a quitter.  It is a classic Catch 22 scenario, as well as another example of how willing lesbians are to eat their own kind, especially when they aren't perky, pretty and politically correct.

Rosie's leaving will absolutely be claimed as a victory by the neo-con and misognyistic factions she battled and will be spun accordingly.  Regardless of what individual perceptions of Rosie might have been, her leaving silences a regular national platform for the GLBT viewpoint and that is a blow to the community as a whole.

    I'm sad! She souldn't leave!

I think Rosie has been doing a great job.  She brought back to The View something lost when Meredith left, and best of all, Star left! I like the fact that she is opinionated, that she doesn't care about being that "politically correct" and specially I like the fact that she makes people feel indentified with her! Not only lesbians, but thousands of housewives that have kids and have crushes on famous people and all that stuff... and of course being a size that is more "normal" to America than Elizabeth's or Barbara. I think she will be missed, and I hope ABC get's low ratings and only when she is there the rating come up, so they'll know what they did!<br>

Observations on that other lesbian talk show host..

Has anyone noticed that Ellen has been getting a lot gayer in the last few months?  After a relatively asexual run, she has talked about (very sweetly) the hazards of forgetting (albiet do to the time difference between the US and Australia) you girlfriend's birthday, she talked about coming out with Oprah (and also how Stedman ran into Portia and Ellen at the local deli), T.R. Knight, and most recently Laura Dern.  She even joked about how, surprise! she is not really gay, the whole last 10 years were really about publicity.  There may be others that I am missing.  Also, Sharon Stone got down right flirty when Ellen asked if she was dating... Stone responded, "I thought you had a girlfriend?... [to the audience] We rolled around once before on tv... sometimes we like to talk about it..."  The result, Ellen fanning herself off and changing the subject...  I guess that if Rosie is stepping out of the light again, at least Ellen does seem to be picking up some in terms of representing, in a normal day to day sort of way.

i also dont identify with her at all -- shes is too outspoken and harsh at times

the only reason why im upset at all is because its one less lesbian on tv because we dont have many but honestly rosie gives lesbians a bad name with her constant fueds and outspoken rants, kind of glad shes leaving

QUOTE:"as well as another example of how willing lesbians are to eat their own kind, especially when they aren't perky, pretty and politically correct. "-- It's not lesbians she had the fueds with, and it's not lesbians who are hustling her out the door.

QUOTE:"but honestly rosie gives lesbians a bad name with her constant fueds and outspoken rants"

Right, just like George Bush, ALL the males on FOX News, and The Donald give straight males a bad name with their behaviour. I don't think it's Rosie who gives us a bad name.

Back to Rosie--CNN reported that she was in the running for the Price is Right gig.

    Harpy's picture

    Check this out

The Price is Right?  Interesting.  I actually like that idea a lot.  I'd actually TiVo it.

I just came across a clip of Rosie at a women's luncheon where she is pretty crass and re-kindles the Trump feud in a big way.

    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=18e_1177494208

And could this have anything to do with the announcement she is leaving?

    Gobias Somecoffee's picture

    Re: Matrix

Wow, I actually agree with O'Reilly in that it was inappropriate for Rosie to say such things at a luncheon.  From what I could see, it was a formal event and to be vulgar at that time was uncalled for.  And as for Donald, just drop it already.  He called you fat, we get it.  See, this is why I've never liked her but of course this is just my opinion.
    Kaira's picture

    I agree that maybe the

I agree that maybe the swearing and all that was a little out of place but these are grown women who have lived in big businesses and have probably been through much worse what with office politics. They must've known she would pull some sort of stunt. She's Rosie.

As for the 17 year olds in the audience... O'Reilly was annoying with that one. As if 17 year old girls are somehow innocent and fragile, that their little minds were raped by the horrific words coming out of Rosie's mouth.... Give Me A Break. If she sent them all a twitter with her words then they're not going to make it in the real world at all. I mean its not like she came up there wearing nothing but her underwear and threw food at people. She's a comedian. One known for her racy jokes. They want clean jokes? Call Ellen.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

    Gobias Somecoffee's picture

    She's Rosie but

She's Rosie but that doesn't give her the right to tell someone to "eat her" at a formal event.  It's not the time to say such things whether there be adults or 17 year olds.  There's a place and a time and I don't believe that was it.

    NLL's picture

    Haha

I thought she was funny, and so did most of them there. Thank god for Donna Dees in the interview, at least she provided a reality check to O'Reilly's suddenly delicate sensibilities. The man needs psychological help. Soon!

His yelping:"well I wouldn't be able to do that." *rollseyes* See that's what's really bitin his ass. It's probably one of his fantasies to tell a bunch of successful, influencial women, many of whom probably make more money than he does, to "bite me". Poor baby. As for his concern about the high school girls--I'm concerned about them too! Especially since some of them said that their ambition was to become the next Helen Girlie Brown of cosmopolitan magazine. Yeah, there is something wrong when teenage girls still aspire to edit superficial, "how to get a man"-- "are my implants too big" "women's" magazines. OY Vey.

    We Need to Support Rosie

    Stardust

The homophobic, misogynistic comments about Rosie since she began on The View have appalled me. Here is an intelligent woman who has always simply exercised her freedom of speech and, in doing so, is helping to protect ours. I am actually a Latin woman who has worked with her. She is a fighter, just like her television persona. Some of the comments seem to suggest she is prejudiced. I never found that to be the case. Any humor misstep was played to the hilt by the press. She is a tough gal who can take care of herself, but we as a community need to support her. I'm probably older than many of you writing. You probably don't realize just how close we are to losing the rights that others fought so hard for us to obtain. We need Rosie out there fighting for us. Aside from that, she's just funny and brilliant as heck. I would welcome any announcement that she'll be back on the airwaves with her own show.
    tiff's picture

I think that, when it comes

I think that, when it comes down to it, what she does is great. I wouldn't ever say things the way she does and be so pushy about my views. Most of us think that it's too in your face and brash. I'm a baby-step kinda girl... I just don't think that people like to be force-fed things that they don't agree with and that it's something that takes time. But if there were millions of people like me trying to change the world, it would never ever get done. Baby steppers didn't outlaw slavery or give women the right to vote. As much as we hate their style, we need people like Rosie in this world to try to balance out the millions that "hate" gay people.
    jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

    Good Show Today

The View was funnier than ever today. Joy was definitely on a roll, and she clearly thinks Elizabeth is a tool. Rosie was loose and clever and I'll probably go back to not watching the show at all when she leaves.
    Riven2310's picture

    No hold bars.....

I was thinking of the old expression - as you close one door, you open another.  For all Rosie's pros and cons and very public flaws included, aside from being a naturally funny person when she wants to and certainly not one to shy away from her views of things, one thing I will say about Rosie is love her or despise her, she is a magnet for attention.  I just heard on the news this a.m. that The View went up 17% since Rosie joined...not too shabby.  If I were a producer, I would offer her her own show in a heart beat -- one that is meant to be open to all topics with guests and one that most likely would be controversial.

However, the viewing audience already knows this is part of it.  In other words, if it's not their cup of tea, why bother their time with it.  And I would like to see Donald Trump on as the first guest to kick off the show...assuming he agrees.  Given his ego and love for PR, I bet he would.  Followed by Tom Delay.  I think it would do very well - and probably hit the roof with ratings.  If attention is what all the parties involved seek, then they will all walk away "winners"....not to mention the added PR they get surrounding their appearance.  And Rosie can do her thing -- succeed or fail.

However, I honestly wonder at times if Rosie might be bipolar.  She can be like 2 completely different people rolled into one.  That could just be the way she is, but if that is the case, then I would not like to see her follow the suggestion I meant above because I think it would only make matters worse for her personally.
