All hail Queen Tina Turner

It seems Aretha Franklin, often called the Queen of Soul, is not pleased that Beyoncé called Tina Turner the "queen"on the Grammy Awards broadcast.

"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé," Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

Franklin apparently ended the statement with "love to Beyoncé anyway."

Sheesh, Aretha. It was an intro, not a review. And Beyoncé is a huge fan of Tina, so she was bound to praise her.

Plus, Beyoncé didn't refer to Tina as the Queen of Soul, specifically. She just said, "give it up for the queen."

And I'm happy to give it up, whatever it is, because I thought Tina's performance was incredible. She can still hit those high notes and do the moves — at 68 years old! Wow.

Since I was in a Tina mood, I decided to watch What's Love Got to Do With It last night. And then I got all overwhelmed by Angela Bassett's arms.

Whoa.

It was especially cool to see Angela-as-Tina doing the same intro to "Proud Mary" that Tina and Beyoncé did on the Grammys.

(Yeah, I got a little thrill when Beyoncé and Tina said, "We like to do it nice and rough.")

If you haven't seen What's Love Got to Do With It yet, I highly recommend it. It's a great way to commemorate Black History Month — or Tina Turner month, which should really be every month.

    YES!

Words cannot express my excitement watching Tina Turner on the Grammy's.  I had no idea she was going to appear - & sing three songs!  I always love her dance moves.  And her yummy back-up dancers, which (no disrespect to Beyonce) I watched way more than Beyonce.  We all love the classics, but I would recommend a little know girl-themed Tina song from the early 80s on her LIVE FROM EUROPE CD/DVD called "GIRLS" (there was also a video).

    I don't know what

I don't know what mesmerizes me more. The voice of this First Lady...

    ...or the backup singers ^^;;;

    Tina!

I was so excited for Tina's performance and stayed up all night just to watch the Grammy Awards for it. In Germany they were on television around 2 a.m. till 5 a.m. but Tina was totally worth it :)

    That kick....

at the end by Tina - whew!  Gonna be material I'll use for days!!  This performance and Winehouse's were my fav's.  I even clapped and danced watching the video posted here.  LOVE LOVE LOVE Tina - and the reference to "What's Love Got to Do With It?" was beauty.  I heard somewhere they didn't want to cast Angela because her arms were too muscular.  Can you believe that??
    Thank you!!!

    Sweet Jebus

I have so much respect for Aretha Franklin but for her to be miffed about someone calling Tina Turner the Queen just seems so childish and stupid. I mean come on it's Tina Turner. That woman is the shit. She has been through hell and back so many times and still remain awesome. Not to mention she's one hell of a performer. That Grammy performance proved that she is still the most wonderful and charismatic performers EVER. Jealously is never a good color on anyone.

    Don't hate, appreciate.

I love love loooove Angela Bassett. Dear god, is that woman outstanding. She's so gorgeous and intelligent that if I met her I'd probably forget my own name. Which is sad because her name is my name. Why that woman isn't appreciated more is beyond me.

    Ah, Tina ...

Years ago, Lena Horne said something to the effect of "I'd give anything to spend one day as Tina Turner." Me agree. And since that woman is 99x more fit at 68 years old than I am at considerably younger, can I have two days? In Rio? During Carnival? Please???

    Tina Turner IS "The Queen"...

Here's my own personal opinion. Although Aretha Franklin is extremely talented and I'm a fan, I think Tina Turner has been under-appreciated for far too long. It seems like Aretha and Patti LaBelle get all of the attention...not sure exactly why. ???
    shygurl99's picture

    I agree

Aretha is great but so is Tina Turner. Also, Aretha has had tons of awards and programs in her honor, so I don't know why she would get upset with Tina having the spotliight just this once.

I took my mom to see Tina in concert!

What a great mother-daughter day that was!  Among the top 10 concerts for both of us.

As far as Aretha is concerned...she is making much ado about nothing.

Okay, Aretha, Tina is a queen too!

Patti and Aretha both wear me out...

Patti LaBelle's dramatics on Clash of the Choirs irked me and this statement by Aretha Franklin irks me even more. (even though Aretha has been talking ish like this for years)

Let me say this.  I bet Aretha's azz cant get up there and do all those dance moves Tina was doing. They'd be carrying her out the building on a stretcher.....

    Pretty humble for a gospel

Pretty humble for a gospel singer, no? Aretha Franklin needs to get over herself. SO petty.
    jackedup77's picture

    LOL

Have you ever been to a gospel choir practice? When you do, remember to keep your piece peace

I went to a catholic school

I went to a catholic school for nine years and I sang in the choir. I think I've earned the right to an opinion.

    ha, defensive much?

    ha, defensive much?

didn't say you couldn't have an opinion. apparently, my sense of humor needs work

But, gospel choir and catholic choir are completely different things. it's like comparing classical music to hip hop.

My point was, humble is the last word that comes to mind when you encounter a gospel singer. A lot of the soul Divas out there started out singing gospel. Your typical gospel singer's concentration is focused 10% on Jesus and 90% on "look at how great a singer I am".

Unless I missed the sarcasm in your first post; I think Aretha will get over herself shortly after the second coming. Maybe.

You really should consider catching a live gospel performance. it's enlightening.

The Australian NRL had an association with Tina for about 5 years - which were the League's most successful ever.

    All I Can Do

Is shake my head at you Aretha *tut tut*. Tina IS a Queen and so much more in her own right as well as deservedly so! Damn it, can't we all just get along; divas, queens and all?

So I'm guessing Ms. Franklin never watched or heard of Mary J Blige's documentary where she (Blige) dubs herself The Queen of Hip Hop Soul huh? Sheesh.

All that said, I still think your (Aretha) Album: Jewels In The Crown - All-Star Duets With The Queen is the best thing since slice bread. However, Tina IS and will Always Be - MY # 1 so just deal with it please. *shakes head some more at you*

    More than one Queen

Tina is the Queen of Rock 'n Roll. Aretha is the Queen of Soul. I've never thought of Tina Turner as a Soul or R&B artist...she's pure Rock 'n Roll...hence the "nice and rough".

Tina Turner is the dog's gonads

In case you are wondering - that's a compliment.  I've seen her live 5 times and every time she blew me away.  My partner shouted to me "Your girl's on tv."  I ran down and said, "She's not my girl, she's my woman."

Oh and Angela Bassett - excuse me whilst I swoon.  Courtney B Vance - you are one lucky guy.

    I'm in love...

I dont care what anybody (especially a uber diva like Aretha) says: Tina Turner is THE Queen! Beyonce introduced her right. Tina always puts on a show, shes simply legendary. There is no other....

Except for maybe Angela Bassett. I adore her and that body... Damn! I know Courtney just wakes up everyday with a smile on his face. Which he should because hes married to my woman. :)
