Posters and trailers: "Baby Mama," Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, moreWow, there are a lot of movies I haven't heard of. And at least a few I'm really looking forward to. It's time for another poster-and-trailer extravaganza! First, the Baby Mama poster hasn't really been released yet, but I came across this snapshot of the actual paper object. Cute. Is it April 25 yet?
Next, Smart People, featuring the smart and adorable person named Ellen Page (yeah, and Sarah Jessica Parker, too, but I find her less smart and less adorable, and occasionally less human).
This film debuts April 11. Here's the trailer: I like this poster for Birds of America, partly because it has the name Lauren Graham on it, but mostly because some days I feel like a beat-up pigeon.
Here's a summary: "A regular guy struggles with a repressive home and professional life, as well as making amends for the trouble his free-spirited brother and sister cause about town." I'm a sucker for indie films, and this sounds quintessentially indie. Hilary Swank also has a part and a production credit, and Zoë Kravitz is in it too. It screened at Sundance, but it doesn't look like there are any wider releases planned. I'll be looking for the DVD. No, this next one is not about Peggy Peabody.
An IMDb reader describes Jellyfish (actual title: Meduzot) as "Amélie meets Breaking the Waves meets Pauline at the Beach." Wow, that really does sting. This one has a limited release in New York and Los Angeles in April. I don't like the cheesy taglines on this next one, but Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood in the same movie? Could be good.
Here's a summary of The Life Before Her Eyes: "A woman's survivor's guilt from a Columbine-like event 20 years ago causes her present-day idyllic life to fall apart." Oh, right; this sounds familiar. And difficult. It debuts April 18. Here's the trailer: This next poster is both lovely and disconcerting. Elegy stars Penelope Cruz and Patricia Clarkson, which is probably all I need to know. It's based on the novel The Dying Animal, by Philip Roth.
I feel like I want to call it Elegant instead. But it sounds pretty dark; it concerns "sexual possessiveness" between a student and teacher. Eek. It's slated for a June release. Finally, here's one of the most offensive posters I've ever seen. And you know what's most offensive about it? The fact that Cynthia Nixon's name is on it! What is she doing in this movie? I hope the poster is worse than the actual film, and by that I mean I hope the film isn't perverted and pedophilic, because that's the vibe I'm getting here.
The Babysitters opens May 9. I don't think I'll be seeing it, based on this plot summary: "A teenager turns her babysitting service into a call-girl service for married guys after fooling around with one of her customers." Ugh. Here's the trailer, if you dare: I'm going to try to focus on Baby Mama instead. Here's that trailer, one more time, just to end on a high note: Submitted by on March 25, 2008 - 3:45pm. |

Oooohhhhh...
most of these films look interesting
And I think i'll be trying to watch them in theaters, if not rent them later! Not all of them. Just most. Yeah.
Oh, and I went to an advanced screening of Baby Mama last year and I must say it's quite hilarious. I might actually go watch it again just cuz. :)
€omg, inbd
...and I will be going with
Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...
I'm looking forward to see
i'm not sure i want to
see a movie with ellen page as a young republican, i might not like her anymore, and she's too cute for that to be right!
but baby mama looks so good! and the babysitters looks disturbing!
I almost cried...
when Ellen Page said young republicans. :s
But can't wait to see the movie all the same - I've heard her in interviews so I know that it's just quality acting. :P

Elegy & The Life Before Her Eyes
First of all, thanks for another Poster&Trailers edition, Scribegirrrrl.. Appreciated as alwayz!
I saw 'Elegy' at Berlinale few weeks ago and it is another wonderful movie by Isabel Coixet (My Life Without Me) with striking performances by its two leads, Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley (especially Penelope gives such a great performance in English that it is almost as good as when she acts in her native Spanish. Yes, I think that in her case there is huge difference between the too). You might say 'we've seen this so many times before: Student and professor falling in love' but this is one of those movies that will help you rediscover the subject.
The Life Before Her Eyes' - I've read the screenplay few years ago and I dont know how different was it to the final shooting script and how did the movie turn out to be like but it was an exciting cant-put-it-down read with fresh and modern twist - but unlike other movies of the kind - also with lots of debth, sensitivity and substance. I dont remember any gay motives in it - but it has strong female sensitivity. The two girls (who couldnt be in many ways more different) have very close and special frienship and I remember thinking and wondering at the time if the author of a novell might be gay herself (appology for a total speculation based on nothing but my feeling).
I'm excited about The Life
I'm excited about The Life Before Her Eyes because...well, I'm pretty much excited about anything Evan Rachel Wood is in. Should have kept the name of the movie to In Bloom, though.
Can't wait to see Jellyfish, too. I like Etgar Keret's short stories, and I loved Wristcutters: A Love Story, which was based on a story written by him.
Baby Mama.
It being my first time seeing the trailer for Baby Mama, I gotta say it looks good..Not just because Tina Fey is in it!! Pity we have around a month to wait though!
The trailer for Smart People wasn't bad either, looks good enough, although it has Ellen Page..What more could you want?
Birds Of America sounds pretty good too, I'll look out for it when it's out on dvd.
OMG!
Isabel Coixet
That's the name that made me sit up and take notice of the film Elegy. She directed My Life Without Me starring Sarah Polley a few years ago. I thought that was a beautiful, sweet and nuanced film. I've been looking out for anything else by her since then.
Of course Smart People is on my list :) Apparently Sarah Jessica Parker did a great job in this film. She had glowing reviews. But Ellen Page is the reason I'm seeing it.
Amy looks adorable in the
Amy looks adorable in the Baby Mama poster and is even more so all throughout the trailer. Maura Tierney being in it is also icing on the cake. Can't wait for this movie!
And can I just say that I love these movie poster posts? Even though they make me feel as if I live under a rock for not having heard of any of these films (I had no idea Ellen Page had worked on something after Juno), it's always interesting to read all these different synopsis. Plus movie posters are cool in general. So, uh, keep 'em coming, is my point. :)
Smart People
Smart People was actually filmed on my campus (CMU)! I worked in the History Department (which was transformed into the English Department for the movie) and got to watch a bit of filming (and trip over a lot of sound equipment). I saw a lot of Dennis, but not sure if I ever got a glimpse of Ellen or not. Wish I had, though. She is amazing.
I'm very excited about the movie coming out. Not only do I recognize most of the locations in the trailer, but it just looks like a decent film. I'll forgive Ellen her Young Republicans.
