Trip-hop bliss: New Portishead and Goldfrapp

I just read that a new Portishead album will be released April 14 in the U.K. and April 29 in the U.S. It's been a long time coming — their last release was the 1998 live album. You can get more details here.

I'm a big Portishead fan. Beth Gibbons' voice is otherworldly. Every time I listen to one of their albums, I just want more and more and more, so this is great news for me. You may think you haven't heard of them, but if you're an L Word fan, you have. Remember the music in this scene?

That's "Roads," from the album Dummy. The repeated line "How can it feel this wrong?" was perfect for the Bette-Candace affair.

Portishead's European tour beings March 26, and they'll play Coachella a month later. I still haven't seen them in concert, but their live CD and DVD are phenomenal. Here's the video for "Sour Times," also from Dummy:

Meanwhile, the new Goldfrapp album, Seventh Tree, hits stores Feb. 26. It's more "trip" and less "hop" than most of their releases (except for maybe Felt Mountain). You can stream it here (hat tip to Pop Candy).

I think I might have to make today a trip-hop day and put together a playlist of Portishead and Goldfrapp — along with Lamb, Supreme Beings of Leisure, Alpha, Télépopmusik, Sneaker Pimps, Zero 7 (featuring Sia), Hooverphonic, Morcheeba and the ever fabulous Massive Attack. Groove overload!

    Ooh new Portishead album!

Ooh new Portishead album! Can't say I'm a big fan, but I like what I've heard from them. The European tour is definitely some very good news! (first Morcheeba are gonna be 'in town' in march and now even maybe this? Joy ^^)

As for the new Goldfrapp album... heard it, but meh, doesn't quite live up to Supernatural and that's a shame. :/ Glad they changed the cover of the album though...
(at first many people thought it would be this one: )

...Hmm, funny, some people even list Bjork as a trip-hop artist...
but hey, why isn't Moloko on there? O.o

edit: Actually Roads may be known to some from a completely different scene in a completely different movie... geez now where did I put it... >_> (gimme a sec)

    forgot Moloko

    But I love 'em. :)

Jeez, that would have been the worst album cover ever.

    Yep, the Pierot-esque outfit

Somehow, the Pierot-esque outfit just doesn't fly with the Owl-kite thing she's holding... then again, maybe a stronger breeze WOULD blow them both away...

The scene I know the song

The scene I know the song Roads from is the dirt-shower scene in Tank Girl, right before Lori Petty's character lays a big ole kiss on a surprised and confused Niaomi Watts.

Cinematic masterpiece that Tank Girl is...

    Precisely

    Precisely! :D
That scene is absolutely hilarious. And obviously my favorite.

    don't forget Roisin Murphy

    former lead singer of Moloko!

Her new album Overpowered is just mind-blowing!

(Actually Overpowered isn't even the most characteristic track on it, I would say. Although it is a great piece too.)

    Finally!! I was beginning

Finally!! I was beginning to wonder whether there would ever be a new Portishead album.

I don't think it's possible that anyone, especially in the UK will not have heard at least one of their songs. Their songs are quite popular for adverts and especially in background music in dramas etc on TV.

Yayness, if only April were nearer...

    good good good stuff man.

good good good stuff man. Portishead is great and i was so psyched when i first heard they were going to be releasing another album.. as for goldfrapp i know a lot of people have been bitching about this "new" sound but whatever it sounds incredible to me people just can't get passed Supernature, not to say that wasnt an incredible album itself but give seventh tree a chance it's got some killer sound already and it's not really that far off from some of their earlier stuff besides looking at alison goldfrapp do her thing is never a bad thing.

YAY! Portishead is my favorite band. To think they might produce something as good as Roads or Sour Times or Glory Box makes me utterly happy!

    Trip-hop rulez

OMFG, I nearly had an orgasm a few weeks back when I learned that Portishead's new album was on its way. YAY! I like some of the preview stuff I've heard.

Funny thing, though. I was transferring all 3 of my Moorcheeba albums to my new MP3 player, and I've really gone off them! I like the music, but Skye Edwards' voice was driving me round the bend. WOEZ. So I won't be getting the album they've just released.

I love all the bands you mention, though. I'd also add Amon Tobin, Moloko and Thievery Corporation. Massive Attack are my favourite band evah, except for maybe Red Snapper (not quite trip-hop, but funky sounds - check out 4 Dead Monks and Keeping Pigs Together... and the other stuff on their Myspace).

I've made a new discovery in terms of similar-sounding (to me) genres - dubstep. Worth checking out.

    seventh tree

the new Goldfrapp album is not as fast paced as the previous one, very chilled and relaxed (almost mellow), maybe not as inventive as usual but I liked it a lot. So far I really like A&E the most.
