The Peabody Awards (sadly, this has nothing to do with Helena or Peggy)

On Wednesday, the 66th annual Peabody Awards were doled out. Not to be confused with that improbably brilliant dog from Rocky and Bullwinkle, the Peabody Awards "recognize distinguished achievement and meritorious service by radio and television networks, stations, producing organizations, cable television organizations and individuals." The original idea was to establish a "Pulitzer Prize for radio." So, you know — just a snootier version of the Emmys, and extended to other formats like radio and the web.

Anyway. Here are some of the winners:

  • ABC: Ugly Betty
Right on. I hope this show can maintain the perfect blend it's got going. It's funny; it's moving; it's gay-friendly; it's beautiful.

  • NBC: The Office
The Peabody dudes were like, "It's so awesomely fascinating." And Michael Scott was like, "That's what she said!"

  • NBC: Friday Night Lights
Malinda loves this show. I have yet to see it myself, but that's probably good — if I were to watch it, it would suddenly be canceled. It's my curse.
  • NBC: Scrubs
Don't ask me — I hate this show.
  • HBO: Billie Jean King: Portrait of a Pioneer
The Peabody site describes this as "unusually substantial for a sports biography." Yeah, and unusually gay, I'm assuming. That's a compliment!

  • HBO: When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts
See this if you haven't. And then go back to the top of this list to cheer yourself up.

    When the Levees Broke...

This is definitely a must see documentary. Spike Lee deserves every award he can get for it.

    Scrubs?

I LOVE Scrubs, it's probably one of the best comedies on television. Period. I guess it's an aquired taste.

    Same here...

if I were to watch it, it would suddenly be canceled. It's my curse.

I know the feeling. I think if I stopped watching TV good shows would actually survive.

    Finally!

Finally someone who shares my disdain for all things "Scrubs"! I seriously doubt the show even has writers, they just look up some "profound life-wisdom" in YE OLDE BOOKE OF PLATITUDES for every show and acts it out with the same tired cast of characters. Can't some nice senator form a comittee to ban Zach Braff from stage and screen, pretty please?

    Seriously?

Have you even watched the show?  Scrubs is one of the smartest best written comedies on television today.  Period.

    Already?

Gosh, the Peabody's already? I remember when my close personal friend Helga Von Fliedermaus won the '78 Peabody for best documentary with: "A Post-Feminist Movement Womyn's Guide to Combat Dating". Of course she declined the award siting a patriarchal guilt-trip tokenism, sending a mime in her stead to the ceremony to act out an elaborate and largely incomprehensible parable of the universe as uterus that culminated with the mime giving actual birth on the stage. I've only ever seen grainy footage of the event, but I have to agree with the critics that it was a bit heavy handed.

    Give Scrubs a Chance!

I just started watching Scrubs repeats on Comedy Central... and then found myself wikipedy-ing the episode list so i could cross off all the ones I'd seen.

the best part of this show is TURK AND J.D.!  They are a way better and more homo-friendly combo than Chandler and Joey.  Come on, brown bear!
