O'Reilly panics: lesbians are "declaring themselves" in yearbooks (and not just in cute BFF signatures)

Having informed us that lesbian gangs are taking over America, Bill O'Reilly is back to warn us about a new phenomenon: Cute lesbian couples are taking over America's high schools! What's more, they're doing it just to "tweak" adults. Darn kids these days.

On the Nov. 7 edition of The O'Reilly Factor, He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Heard spoke to Dr. Laura Berman, director of the Berman Center and assistant clinical professor at Northwestern University. The topic of the day was Waukegan High School in Illinois — specifically, the "Cutest Couple" poll for the senior yearbook. In those hallowed halls, Brandy Johnson and Lupe Silva were voted the cutest couple of them all, and it's not hard to see why:

Yes: because they're cute! But to O'Reilly, it's not that simple: No, the Waukegan Bulldogs are trying to make an issue of something — trying to start a revolution via yearbook poll. After all, that's tactic No. 43 in the Homosexual Agenda Handbook. Next on the list: stocking the soda machines with virgin mimosas and herbal teas!

Dr. Berman (who, of course, considers the poll a sign of progress) held her own and then some, chuckling and smirking and all but rolling her eyes at O'Reilly's ridiculous statements. I myself was shrieking with outrage when he started going on about "appropriateness" and the difference between "who you are and what you do," but I should take a page from Dr. Berman's book and master the art of the derisive grin. See for yourself, and remember: Polls are subversive weapons of mass resocialization. Sorta like Fox News.

    Congrats to the Cutest Couple

I didnt hear about this, but just saw the pic, and all I can think is that is awesome they were voted cutest couple it says alot about the HS aged kids and how ignorance is slowly disappearing. But clearly the older, not wiser, generation is trying to do whatever they can to take away any progress we make. But because what should be important and was taken away by Billy (I bet he doesnt like that) is congratulating those girls, thats what I am going to do.

Congrats Brandy and Lupe! You are a very cute couple!

    Congratulations to the adorable couple

The school I teach at is pretty open-minded, but the yearbook staff still puts spaces to fill in one male and one female for "cutest couple." It's wonderful that this school and yearbook staff has caught up with the times and that the students voted for these ladies!! Oh, and thanks to Bill O'Reilly, they're the most famous "cutest couple" in any yearbook EVER!!!

    I can't believe...

... that this kind of debates are broadcasted on the american TV. Honestly... as a german (or european) I'm quite shocked about this. What's up over there?! This man and his point of view are completely out of question... I can't believe any channel gives him any airtime! Is he popular? He definetly shouldn't be! Wow... it's the 21st century and people are talking about this on national television?! Something is going waaay wrong...

Dr. Berman was great though. He didn't let her finish any sentence... way to go on the politeness . Not the loudest one is the right one! But her facial expression was sure worth watching the vid.

    Unfortunately, He's for Real!

Wow--I'm not accustomed to getting pissed off when I view this site, but this clip had me not only internally rejoicing at how far today's kids have come and cheering for the cute couple in question, but also boiling!!  I don't get riled up about much...but Bill O'Reilly is something my Father and I often fight about.  Unfortunately, that rude, arrogant, close-minded, homophobic idiot has a big following in the U.S.--and it is a very scary thing that he gets to 'ram his opinions' in the public's minds as if they're fact.  I'll agree with what everybody else has already said about Fox, but I'd also be curious as to who else would deserve being spit on!  I'm going to venture a wild guess and bet at least one of the other two is the same also-rude, arrogant, close-minded, homophobic politician that we here in PA finally got out of office last election--Rick Santorum!  Bill O'Reilly ranks right up there with him in my book!

That man is so ignorant it's sad. He's completely talking out of his ass. lol He's an asshat.

It makes me so happy to see lesbian version of the cutest couple. lol Hollywood Marie youre right. They really are the most famous cutest couple ever.

    Tool Time

What a fucking tool. I haven't watched O'Reilly for ages because, well, I can't. I get SO angry that I rant for days. He's like this major idiot who interrupts and talks over people and accuses experts/guests of having an agenda when HE'S the one with the agenda!!! I can't stand him. He's one of three people I'd spit on if I passed them on the street.
    latinwinter's picture

    Sooo with you...

If I watch ANYTHING on Fox News for longer than 20 minutes I feel like I'm literally choking on the rage it inspires in me. Thinking about the millions of minions that O'Reilly has parroting every ignorant comment that spews from his lips really makes me depressed about my fellow american citizens. I prefer to get my clips of Fox News through The Daily Show or Bill Maher, 'cause if I can't laugh it all I'll be crying.
    amberb's picture

    Jennifer--

So who are the other two people you'd spit on? I'm so curious! :-)

But I agree completely. I used to work out at a gym that kept most of the TVs in front of the elliptical machines on Fox news. It was so obnoxious but in some ways a great motivator for working out. It made me feel like if I kept moving fast enough I'd actually be able to get through the TV screen and strangle O'Reilly with my bare hands.

Congratulations to Brandy and Lupe! They look adorable and very happy!

(that doesn't look like someone winking - it looks like someone stroking out).

Second, I’m not sure where to begin.  I did say this was only Vol. 1, right?  (too heavy to carry my ENTIRE list).  But it’s cross-referenced and annotated, so I could do it… chronologically, I guess.  Or by person/profession.  Or chronologically BY person/profession.

Eh, I’ll just toss out a few random names, in no particular order:  Joe Lieberman, “Dr.” Laura, David Addington, definitely Ann Coulter (she gets an über-loogie), Dr. Eric Keroack, J. Nicholas Counter, Robert Novak, the douchebag from Duane Reade (42nd St.), my 7th grade math teacher.  Also, S.O. and J.P.

...and that's just 2 lines from pg 1 of Vol. 1.

but Gali – I wouldn’t take that bet with you!  I’m guessin’ your list is longer (and that's a little scary)   ; )

well, my list is definitely not very discriminatory! ( insert wink of own design here!)

And yet I am known as the "nice" one. Go figure! ( insert smiley of own design!) Why, just the other day I saved a bunny!

But shame about the bet! I need the dough! ( insert another wink of own design!)

    He angers me also

I get ssoo angry when I watch anything on Fox News because they are so ignorant and reactionary.

Ironically though on FX (a subsidary of Fox television) they show lesbian content on Shows like Nip/Tuck and Dirt (which has pretty daring lesbian content when it is available) How daring?: Umm Carly Pope wearing a strap on arriving through the through the "back door"? Oh wow watch that be deleted.

So I don't get Fox television except that maybe lesbians are viewed as salacious material to pander to the purient fantasies of male viewers? Objectification rears it's male head once again..

You are so right about that being a double standard.
I was in such a mellow mood until I saw that clip. This man was quite upsetting. Do people listen to him?
Dr. Laura Berman was very logical and was able to point out how illogical his statements were. I like how she handled it.

I'm with fabouly. I live in the UK and I cannot believe this crap is shown on tv! It's outrageous he can get away for being so homophobic.

I am genuinely shocked that something like that could be televised. I feel sorry for any American teens who may have seen this and been in the process of coming out or have just come out etc because [understandably] they won't want to be open about who they are and they are with because of people like this guy. Sorry that doesn't really make sense I'm just so riled up about watching that.

I think Dr. Berman was amazing for putting up with that knobhead though! I certainly couldn't have stayed as calm and collected as she was.

This is the first time I think I have commented on a blog and yet I read every blog entry posted. Thanks scribegrrl for a really insightful blog entry!

    Quite embarrassing

O'Reilly's homophobia is sometimes embarrassingly obvious - even more so when he tries to deny it.

This is probably the most homophobic report I've ever seen him do. Take a gander at that.

He (along with many other people of course) have these certain beliefs (among them the belief that gay couples are inadequate parents and the children end up ill-adjusted because of it) not supported by any reason whatsoever. He simply believes this stuff in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. He and people similar to him can never back up their opinions with facts - even if they are right about something - they have faith that they are correct and that is the end of it. Even if he argues with someone who is on the left wing who is completely in the wrong, all he can do is yell and cut off their mic.

The only good thing about "reports" like these are the guests who simply tell him how ridiculous he's being and how unfounded these opinions about this really are.

I actually hate many commentators more than him but that doesn't mean I can actually stand him enough to watch his programme.

He is way off his rocker...again!

Bill O'Reilly makes me sick. He asks Dr. Berman to respect his "valid" opinion, but he cuts her off and blatantly disrespects her opinion. He contradicts himself all the time, and tries to say "I wrote my book for young gay Americans who are being bullied...blah blah blah." Get a grip!

How is posing together as a couple for an innocent picture sexually inappropriate? If that's the case, they should ban prom pics too. It's ok to be sexually explicit as long as you're straight?  This dude aggravates me in so many ways. And to think my girlfriend's grandpa absolutely loves Bill O'Reilly. Thankfully he has never done anything homophobic in the four years I've been dating his granddaughter. After all, he is a self proclaimed reformed bigot who has two lesbian daughters and a lesbian granddaughter.  And for that, I will overlook the fact that he eats up all the poison that comes out of Bill O'Reilly's mouth.

    Things I learned from

Things I learned from watching this interview:

    1. GAYZ HAS TEH SEX ALL TEH TYME! Heterosexual couples, on the other hand, are chaste and pure and spend their time adopting puppies and never thinking about sex unless they really, really want a baby.

    2. There's no reason why gay couples can't just identify as "friends." Except, you know, for all that sex they're constantly having.

    3. "Because that's how it's always been!" is a perfectly valid argument. Don't worry about the fact that it HASN'T always been that way or that some social normals are unfair and nonsensical. That kind of thinking is liable to hurt your wittle head.

    Thanks, Bill!

    Hmm...

I live in Sweden and it's truly shocking to se this kind of blatant homophobia on american television. Our most conservative government party, Kristdemokraterna (basically the christian democrats) are liberals compared to this guy and I can honestly say that if a "journalist" like O'Reilley said anything like this, there would be an uproar. It's a shame...
    Lori's picture

    Um okay...

This article just makes me want to hurt Bill O'Reilly that much more. At least Laura didn't have a stick up her ass in this. Bill O'Reilly should just admit that he is a homophobic xenophobic ass and get it over with.

I used to like Fox News but now hate it because of this man. They are losing viewers by keeping this man on air. I wish some guy would just go up to him and make him feel really really uncomfortable by flirting with him or something. Hell i'd even be willing to dress as a guy to see the reaction on his face.

Academic. Academic! I call it Reception of Medieval Ages...

Being European (from a very small yet quite well respected country boasting a semi-direct democracy in between high mountains ;-)) this truly is yet another confirmation of the bad picture of "America" we get every now and then.

The America which is "running" and judging our Planet. Red States having way too much influence - and a society (i.e. those parts that get represented in the media and thereby kinda seem to form public opinion) who in a way still have to live in a medieval state of repression. Kinda. I know there are people with liberal views (like AE readerts, Ms Berman etc.) but they are in a permanent battle struggling against conservative moral standards and "ethics" in society.

Haha - O'Reilly should hear himself: if those people who set the base for role model America with the French Revolution stuck with established rules, Amercia/The US would not even exist today!!!!

Ridiculous his stressing "academic".... ehmmm... ever heard of the Humanist idea of free thought? (P.S.: goes back to the Greek - where the word "academic" has its origin too, btw, Mr. O'Reilly!). Yeah, this man was a teacher? No wonder only morons (and a few "rebels" ;-) ) can come out of his class/the education system!

I truly feel for every one of you who has to cope with such an ignorant society who on the whole (for their negative aspects) seem to have much in common with a medieval one where fears were big and belief in nonsense was normal and reasonable thinking was not an option. O'Reilly and his alikes very much are defending a matter-of-fact reception of Medieval behaviour...and as a law student I must end with what really is a sign of evolution and progress:

    HUMAN RIGHTS!!!!!!
Ever heard of them, Mr. O'Reilly? No, we don't mean yours, we mean ours!

    Progress

First of all Mr. O'Reilly, it's pronounced Waw-kee-gan.  I guess researching how to fortify your homophobic agenda among the baby boomers didn't leave much time to actually research, or even ask, how to correctly pronounce the city.

As much as it upsets me to hear the things he says, for decades so many GLBT individuals around the world won't see the level of acceptance we now have here in the states.  I'm not that old, but our visibility is still new and only 20 years ago our President had, for the first time publicly, uttered the acronym 'AIDS' and acknowledged that it was not the 'Gay Cancer' or a gay disease.  This is almost an entire decade since the onset of the 'AIDS panic' that he addressed the issue.  He spent his entire presidency ignoring what has become a pandemic - All because it was seen as a 'gay disease'.

The fact that FoxNews elects to debate the validly of the voted high school cutest couple, who happen to be lesbian; whether or not we agree with all the views, is progress.  Progress may not be as fast as we'd like, but we should never forget how fast and far we have progressed.

    Jealous, much?

It's ironic that the men who just wrote "Kids are Americans, Too!" out of some purported goodwill for the littlest patriots, and who repeatedly stresses the that these are minors he is talking about, has the gall to publicly broadcast, on national television, the names of two minors, their pictures, their high school, and their hometown.

Also, if these are just kids experimenting, then why is he making such a big deal about it?

    What an Ass

So, a straight couple is not exposing their sexuality but the lesbian couple is? It has been a long time since I've been in H.S but I sure remember a lot of people declairing their (hetero)sexuality. Why is a picture of a straight couple "appropriate" but a picture of a gay couple not?

And just because you say "with all due respect" does not mean that you are showing respect.  O'Reilly has no respect whatsoever for the LGBT community, people who oppose his views or the truth.  Yet Dr. Berman and probably the rest of us are suppossed to respect  homophobes and their "valid veiws".

I am so sick of being defined by "what I do" and not who I am. Why do these people insist on thinking about "what I do" every time the word lesbian is mentioned. I don't think about what they do. Eeewwww Icky thought of O'Reilly in my head!

I do have to say that we are making a lot of progress toward acceptance. I think many conservative social leaders have dropped the argument that gays choose to be gay. They a least are accepting that we don't have a choice in the matter. Their arguments now are that we don't have to share our identities with anybody and that we should be celebate and in the case of conservative religious leaders that we can change by accepting Jesus. It is progress. I have a lot of hope for our youth, that they will finally be the ones who say "who cares?"

    Certainly not in Germany

I'm not sure about the entire European continent, but this would certainly never happen in Germany. It simply couldn't.

We have two gay mayors, Berlin's and Hamburg's. We have an openly lesbian christian democratic politician. Openly gay comedians have their own TV shows or are frequently invited on shows. Some even won TV awards, thanking their life partners on national TV and their was no uproar whatsoever. No one cared.

So even though I sometimes hate this country, and I've always wanted to move/life in San Francisco, I'm becoming more and more repulsed by the way the American right wing agenda is not only getting shoved in our faces through the media, but also by how many people still fall for that.

After seeing this interview, I am honestly scared of having to live in the US. I know that there are people who don't hate "us", but sadly the right wings fundamentalist seem to get more and more powerful.

    absentminded87's picture

    that depends

european countries can not just be mashed into one weird mix of countries...

if what we're discussing is where one could get away with saying that it's wrong to say that a lesbian couple is cute, because that would encourage homosexual behaviour, then europe would be very divided on this issue, i believe.

if someone made comments such as these in norway, sweden or denmark, there'd be uproar all over the media. these countries are also at the top of the world when it comes to gender equality. sadly, the us is far down on that list.

if you look at countries like poland, it's much worse than in the US. they've banned any mention of homosexuality in schools, and also banned gay people from teaching. (this was in the media a year ago though, so i don't know if it's gotten worse or better.)

in moscow, a prominent politician got the crap beaten out of him for attending a gay pride parade a few months back.

Germany, as someone has said before me is a pretty open minded country, and i think you'd have problems getting away with such a comment there as well

britain has legalized gay marriage, and though there are right wing people in britain, such as in any other country, i doubt a well known journalist would dare to voice the crap that this guy did.

there are many other countries as well, but i'm only voicing my opinions on those where i have some background knowledge on the homosexuality issue.

many major european cities have had gay men as their mayors.

in norway the finance minister was a gay man a couple of years back, and before that, a lesbian was the minister of justice. in january, a lesbian athlete was even voted role model of the year.

bottom line i think there is a lot of homophobia in the US. and there is also a lot of homophobia in CERTAIN European countries. but some again are way ahead of the US when it comes to matters such as equality for women and gays.

It does happen in Europe !

I'm from Poland so things like that happen here all the time:/

But I guess that men like Bill O'Reilly probably are so atracted to other men that they say such stupid things just to deny it:P wait till he'll get cought with some younger gay from Fox News :P

"things like that don't happen in Europe"?

Some time ago some nutter in Holland said in an interview that all gays should be thrown of a high tower head first!

A year and a half later he was invited as one of the "experts" on "youth and sexuality within islam" on television!

    Just saying!

"call me old fashioned but I prefer feminism that leaves a little something to the imagination!"

    Bravo Dr. Berman!

Wow Bill O' Reilly is one scary asshole! And was he really a high school teacher? He does remind me of my 6th grade history teacher, a downright racist, closed minded sorry excuse of a human being. Thanks "Sarge"

    Anyone see "Sexual Healing"?

I've loved Laura Berman since she had a series on Showtime called Sexual Healing. On the show, she advised all sorts of couples with sexual problems, heteros, gay men, and lesbians alike. It was such a nice portrayal of real-life sex and the problems that can come with it, but I don't think it got picked up for a second season. Too bad.

As for the clip, nothing coming from Bill O'Reilly surprises me anymore. I think the only thing that would truly shock me is if he started advocating for tolerance and speaking rationally about other various subjects, but I'm not holding my breath.
