O'Donnell v. Hasselbeck, round 482On today's episode of The View, things got a little crazy. The show began with the most uncomfortable Hot Topics segment ever. Joy started it off innocently enough — well, she did insist that the nation should be outraged and Bush should be kicked out of office, but it wasn't personal. It soon got very, very personal, between (surprise) Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. (TMZ has the video.)
Rosie said that Elisabeth failed to defend her earlier this week, when Rosie was accused of saying that American troops are terrorists. Rosie didn't say that, exactly (she was really implying that the Bush administration is sometimes no better than a terrorist regime), but her statement could have been interpreted that way. Elisabeth did try to give Rosie a chance to clarify her comment on Monday, but to Rosie, that wasn't enough. When they revisited the whole thing today, it started out personal and stayed there, with Rosie focusing on how hurt she was and even calling Elisabeth "cowardly." I'm reluctant to say so, but I found myself siding with Elisabeth, mostly because Rosie doesn't fight fair. She kept saying, "You're my friend," which sort of leaves the other person with nowhere to go. Elisabeth — in case you haven't noticed — is a Republican, and can be expected to say things that would upset someone as left-leaning as Rosie. I'm not saying Elisabeth shouldn't defend her friends, but nor should she be expected to refrain from speaking her mind. As Rosie knows better than most, sometimes speaking your mind causes friction, even among the best of friends. (Though I'm willing to bet a lot that these two don't stay friends for long after Rosie leaves The View in June.) At one point, the show went to a split screen so you could see every expression as Rosie and Elisabeth fought. It felt more like The Jerry Springer Show. Joy Behar, ever the voice of reason, finally asked, "Who's directing this show?!" It went on too long, and went too far, way beyond debate. Elisabeth even brought up Donald Trump. All in all, it was just tense. I can't deny that Rosie had a point when she said that these things always get spun as a battle between a "big, fat lesbian" and an "innocent, pure Christian," but she could have stopped there. I, for one, wish she had. Later, though, everything got better: The stunning Elizabeth Mitchell was one of the guests. (Tonight is the season finale of Lost, and even Mitchell doesn't know how it ends. Exciting!)
As Mitchell (who is quite tall!) greeted the hosts, Rosie muttered something about loving Mitchell's performance in Gia, "like every other lesbian in the world." (Never mind that Rosie lost a little lesbo street cred when she didn't know the details of Mitchell's stint on ER.) And I remembered again that we'll soon lose that very gay perspective — on that score, Rosie, you will always be missed. But maybe Joy will take up the mantle a little: She asked Mitchell whether Angelina Jolie is a good kisser. Mitchell said yes, of course. Rosie: [to Joy] You don't think, with those lips, she's a good kisser? Hello. Let's just leave it at that: Elizabeth Mitchell is delightful and gorgeous; Angelina Jolie is a good kisser; Joy Behar is hilarious and smart; and lately, Rosie has been hungover a lot. (Her words.) And maybe when things get this uncomfortable, it really is time to bid The View a fond adieu. Submitted by on May 23, 2007 - 12:40pm. |

Full version
I hope some kind soul uploads the full version to youtube, etc. I hate TMZ-they're too cut, and slice, and sexist. I'd like to see the whole thing. Sounds like one of those conversations you should have behind closed doors. Also, Ro seems to be pulling her punches cuz Liz is pregnant.
no punches pulled
Rosie's time on "The View"
I'm With You 100%
I couldn't agree with you more. Rosie is just obnoxious to me and she doesn't have the right to speak for all lesbians. My biggest pet peeve with her is that SHE IS NOT COMFORTABLE IN HER OWN SKIN. When you're a lesbian (or gay or whatever else that is not "conventional") you've got two choices 1) To come out of the closet or 2) To stay in the closet. Now either way you should be prepared to deal/live with is. With Rosie, my contention is this - She has come out of the clost but has proven time and time again and she is not prepared to deal/handle what comes along with coming out! It's like "Hey world, I'm gay. But you know what, I'm want you to know, but I really don't know how to deal with it now that you know. I thought I'd get a reception like Ellen did, but that didn't happen; so now I'm just gonna jump on everyone and be as loud as I can, because I didn't get the reception I expected and now don't know what to do with myself!"
Whew!! That was a mouthful, but truly that is EXACTLY how Rosie comes across in my humble but firm opinion.
I think things also have other purposes!
Hey even me! I'm not even in the States, and I am interested in watching the whole thing!
And I also agree that even though I love Rosie and suport her and agree with what she says, she doesn't represent the whole Gay/Lesbian universe.
lesbian without borders
Wow
Youtube has it up now. Craziness! Gotta say, EH picked that fight today. She went on and on badgering Joy before Ro ever got involved.
Wow...
You guys err girls work fast! I watched the show earlier...and I don't think I've ever been that uncomfortable watching a tv show before. It was brutal. Thank god for Joy and Sheri (sp?). Miss Mitchell was devine as always. I actually just watched GIA last night...*sigh*
Nunya, I agree with a majority of what you said. With that said, Rosie makes things interesting including Elisabeth. More often then not Joy brings up the gay thing and Rosie runs with it. Like it or not she's all we have...for now anyway.
I am what I am. Love me or hate me. Just consider me.
I watched the clip, starting
I watched the clip, starting with Joy, who was also on a roll this morning, and I was disappointed in all parties. Rosie is way too aggressive for daytime TV anymore, Elizabeth is a Bush Koolaid drinker, and the director needed to pull the plug faster than he/she did. It was a trainwreck. Rosie is doing NOTHING to improve the "image" of lesbians on TV; I'm not saying she is obligated to be our representative but like it or not, she is. She is unhappy where she is and needs to get off the air. The next three weeks will be unbearable for her...and for us. That said, I'm sure ABC is happy with the publicity during sweeps month!
YouTube clip
I found a 10 minute clip of the Hot Topics segment on YouTube.

Wow.
I don't like how Elisabeth threw the Donald Trump thing in Rosie's face and Elisabeth really should know (and I think does know) that Rosie does not think the US troops are terrorists. However, Rosie had a chance to clarify her statements the other day and answer yes or no to that question and she didn't - so it's her own fault.
But I don't really care about these gals' feelings... I just like good TV. And there's nothing more amusing than two women fighting.
I wish Elisabeth was wearing something nicer while she was doing it though... I could barely stand to look at her in that hideous number!

wow
Didn't mean it like that.
Sexist? Nah. It's just in my experience of seeing fights between different people, women are the most amusing to watch.
I just find two women sniping and yelling at each other, while Joy Behar tries to break them up, much funnier than two men fighting, which would be more likely to end up with punches and scary aggressiveness.

So glad you brought the recap of the episode back to what was important - hot, hot, hot Elizabeth Mitchell. And what a great picture.
Personally, I felt for Rosie today. She didn't want to talk about the war, she just wanted Elisabeth to say publicly that she (EH) knows Ro doesn't think the troops are terrorists. Elisabeth, of course, can't do that because she so thoroughly buys into the administration's party line that she actually believes that being against the war means being against the troops and, ultimately, against the United States itself. So calling Bush & Co. terrorists is, by extension, calling the troops terrorists.
Now that Rosie is leaving, EH can drop the facade and go for Ro's throat. When EH said something like, "it's a lot easier to argue with someone like Donald Trump who's obnoxious, isn't it," she totally showed her hand. Rosie was dumbfounded -- and didn't bounce back for the rest of the show. I think that, until today, Ro thought that she had a real friend in EH. In any case, I kind of doubt we'll see much of the real Rosie for the next three weeks.
That said, back to the highlight of the show: ELIZABETH MITCHELL!
Can Rosie...
not be fighting with someone for like... a week?
It seems to me Rosie is very skilled at dishing out criticism, but not so good at taking it. She shouldn't expect respect from Elisabeth or anyone else for that matter, if she doesn't plan on giving any. That's the thing that kinda irks me about Rosie, she always has to get the last word in. If you can't maintain at least a resonable amount of level-headedness, what you are saying gets lost in delivery, and I think she's getting to that point. Don't get me wrong, I completely respect Rosie and her oppinions.. but I also respect Elisabeth and hers. It's hard to fight for equality when your fight involves treating other people's oppinions inequally.
I realize Rosie's complaint is that Elisabeth did not defend her as a friend, but what kind of friendship does she believe she has built? I think Rosie needs to give some r.e.s.p.e.c.t.
ps. For someone opposed to war, she sure is good at fueling them.
Gah...
Again, Rosie? Word to most of the posts upthread about Rosie.
On to something lighter. Elizabeth Mitchell, hot! I loved her in ER and Gia. And Angelina Jolie's a good kisser? Who would have thought?
R v. E
I Can't Believe I'm Gonna say this
Not a fan but...
I’ll preface this by saying I don’t watch The View (tho I would’ve if I’d known about EM) and I’m not a Rosie fan. I also don’t know all the details of Ro and EH’s history, just that it’s been contentious.
That said, watching that clip made me think someone needs to slap the shit outta Elisabeth Hasselback. My god, what an annoying shrieking harridan.
And yes, I know Rosie's had her moments as well, but today it was all EH who went around the bend. Rosie didn’t say anything for the first 4 min, while EH repeatedly interrupted Joy (who SO rocks, btw). When Rosie finally did weigh in, she kept her cool and EH’s comment about Trump was just a cheap shot.
And maybe it’s all just built up inside EH like someone suggested and she finally popped today. I don’t know. But I can’t wait until EH is nothing but a washed up has-been, and has to take gigs like “Dancing with the Stars.” Maybe they can pair her up with Wolfowitz or Gonzalez.
Yeah, I know this will piss some people off. S’alright – bring the hate...
Love this show
...
A meltdown of incredible proportions.
Are we done yet?
Omg
O My God that was so serious. Like im at a loss for words for what i just saw go down. Im so mad that i over slept and missed this, I love this freakin show. Ima be sad when Rosie leaves, shes the only reason why I watch this show.
Chu Know Chu Want It...Chu Know Chu Need It...So Come And Get It
Rosie Makes Me Proud
No matter what Rosie says or does, she is nothing more than a target for many people. I don't find her obnoxious, and I don't always agree with her. I do agree with her view on the Bush Administration 100% and I, for one, am glad she's willing to put herself out there, knowing full well what she's going to get in return, just to speak her mind. Not only as a lesbian, but as an American. She has incredible strength that I really admire.
I never watched The View at all because of EH and her complete lemming-like love of Dubya. It's so pathetic, and EH is just some blonde bimbo who was on a "reality" TV show to begin with... hardly makes her a celeb or a journalist so I never understood why she was on The View to begin with, but I know I didn't watch because of her. And she should have had the decency and courage to stick up for Rosie regarding the troops. It's completely ignorant for anyone to believe such a thing, not only about Rosie, but about anyone.
Living in this time just makes me sad. GWB is the absolute President in history and completely destroyed this country and anyone who continues to buy into that crap will get absolutely no respect from me. I just can't do it anymore... keep speaking up, Rosie. People may hate you and write you off as the "fat lesbian", but there are many more thanking God you keep fighting, me included.

Guy EH POV
And in that instance...
And in that instance... strange in a GOOD way for once :)
We're here, we're half queer, get used to it!
I Know That Punchline
Is it strange?
That sometimes I think Rosie actually digs Elizabeth? You know in that way? Okay okay...I do...I know I have bad taste...
not strange...
Aw, the passion ...
No, I really don't think Rosie digs Elizabeth in that way AT ALL. They are just so extreme in their ideologies that they will always butt heads. I think the sparring between them is great for political discourse in this country. I hope they remain friends despite the differences, because you can see they were genuinely hurt by each other during the argument. And yes, they were both near tears by the end of it.
it's EliSabeth, with an S
.. this matters because for a minute there I thought you were saying Rosie digs EliZabeth Mitchell. But come to think of it, she probably does! ;)
I think Rosie is really condescending sometimes. It may seem calmer or less finger-pointy, but it's not really a higher road when she talks down to Elisabeth like that. Plus she accused Elisabeth of "cherry picking" facts, when Rosie herself is the queen of that.
The whole thing was just kind of depressing.
What other direction than
good question!
Hmm, maybe it's just me, but
Hmm, maybe it's just me, but the last thing I'd find attractive is some screechy, lemming-esque Republican who can't argue or debate anything until Bill O'Reilly has told her how to...
That aside, I think they both played unfair. Rosie shouldn't have pulled the "You're my friend" card, and Elisabeth should not have brought up Donald Trump. C'mon, we are so sick of that! However, I agree with Rosie 100% about the "big, fat lesbian" vs. "innocent, pure Christian."
And thank God for Joy!

My Two Cents Worth
I was embarrassed
Quite frankly, it seemed very clear to me that this fight was entirely personal and did not belong on national television. Who was right, who started what ... doesn't really matter. It was something that needed to happen, but SHOULD have happened off the air.
I was uncomfortable watching it, and had it happened in front of me, I'd have walked out of the room.
edited to add: On a side note, Elizabeth's breasts bouncing all over the split-screen made it almost worth while. :-)
Lisa
I AGREE
A situation like that, in my humble opinion, does not merit fault (wrong/right) nor intiator (who started it). They both had built up tension that they needed to release and it NEEDED to happen but not on television.
When you get right down to it - bought women respecting each other (despite political belief) IS, AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN at the forefront. The network took advantage of both women and that's the bottom line!
Rosie is not coming back - she is off now for good
If you read Rosie's blog she has made it clear she is not coming back to the view after the weekend.
I think she is as angry with the director/producer of the show as with Elizabeth. The split screen thing, the refusal to break for commercial (despite Joy repeatedly requesting it), brought the show to a new low. Jerry Springer type sensationalism.
Because yes - it was excruciatingly painful television. Rosie did think of Elisabeth as her friend. And think what you want about Rosie - she is loyal to friends. Just look at tom cruise and martha stewart. She really thought Elisabeth would just say "no". It was an intensely personal fight, and should not have been allowed to take place on television. A principled director would have broken to commercial.
I will miss Rosie. I think that people who didn't watch the view, or read her blog got a warped idea of her from the tabloid news shows.
huh
*Sigh*
