There's no "Amy" in "Grammy," at least not this year

I don't usually enjoy the Grammy Awards broadcast as a whole. It's the sort of thing DVRs were made for — you can fast-forward through all the country music and just watch your favorites. (Kidding. Well, I'm not, but I fully support your right to listen to country music. Just not if I'm ever a passenger in your car, OK?)

But this year, I've been looking forward to the Amy Winehouse–Feist smackdowns for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. They were even both scheduled to perform. Both of them!

Alas; as we all know, these have been trying times for Winehouse. She's actually gone to rehab (yes), and even though she's supposedly on the road back to health, the U.S. Embassy has denied her visa request. So unless she can find a way to sneak into the States (via a very large smuggler and a Winehouse-sized prophylactic, maybe?) she won't be at the Grammy Awards.

Her publicists had this to say:

Amy has been progressing well since entering a rehabilitation clinic two weeks ago and, although disappointed with the decision, has accepted the ruling and will be concentrating on her recovery.

Couldn't they do a satellite feed or something? She could even parody herself and sing "Rehab" from rehab. Might as well enjoy the irony.

[Update: Winehouse is indeed going to perform and accept awards via satellite. My tears dry on their own!]

I live in hope that we'll someday see a healthy, happy Winehouse with a sense of humor about herself and the industry, because I swear I caught a glimpse of that person when I saw her in concert over the summer. I mean, she's only 24 — she could have a long career if she manages to put the pieces back together.

But for now, I think I'll just watch the "Rehab" video one more time! The voice, the soul, the hair ... sigh.

    oh amy

I love her! Hope she gets better soon. Mean ol' US not letting her in.

Actually I kind of hope she stays here so we can keep her forever. National treasure, innit!

    TORN

Now I LOVE love Feist, but Winehouse is my gyrl! Tears dry on their own is my shh!  I really hope and pray she gets it together mind, body, and soul.  I'm pretty sure these experiences are going to produce great songs in the future.

    But for now:

I tried to get a US visa and they said NO, NO, NO.

Dear lord, I love me some Winehouse.

I loved "Rehab" as her single, but I know everyone knew it was a matter of time before her Daddy decided she wasn't fine anymore.

Not only do I want her to take all of the prizes on Grammy night, I hope she gives the performance of her life. Did they release Back to Black in the US? 'case that's the best song on that album, hands down. (Does 'album' make me sound elderly?)

    I can't wait

for the Grammys now. My favorite Amy song is an acoustic version of Valerie I saw on youtube. From something called the DL. Just her and her guitarist in a small room with a mic, and she just tore it up. I'm glad to see her sobering up. It's been just over six years since I did the same.

    She got her Visa

The US Embassy gave her the Visa she needed to come here and perform on the Grammys. She has chosen, however, to stay in London. She will still be performing though.

    Love the Winehouse...but.....

Love the Winehouse and I absolutely agree that she deserves the Grammy and I hope they give it to her!!!  But should she travel to the U.S. and perform on stage and hold the shiney object in her hands just to make us (the fans) happy??  I don't think so....honestly I think the best place for her right now is in rehab and not the kind of rehab where they simply detox her for a little bit and then open the doors back up and wish her luck with her problem.

I want her to get REAL help with her addictions and learn to stay clean and really reinvent that part of her life that will keep her alive.

She is an amazingly talented woman and I hope that we have to opportunity to see that the music comes from inside her soul and not from the drugs.  I would love to see the next Grammy a couple of years from now get awarded to a truly drug free and totally healthy Winehouse.  And I am willing to wait for her Grammy perfromance for that.
