My "American Idol" A-list

Last night, the final 12 Idol girls tried to impress America. I was mildly entertained, but where's this year's Melinda Doolittle or Jennifer Hudson? I guess we mustn't be greedy.

After the show, I looked at my list of favorites so far and realized their first names all start and end with an a (or at least end with an "uh" sound): Amanda Overmyer, Alexandréa Lushington and Asia'h Epperson. Weird!

Amanda:

Alexandréa:

Asia'h:

The pattern would have been broken if I had been able to include Syesha Mercado, and I was expecting to. But, as my girlfriend said, last night Syesha was more like Sy-yeeeesh!-a. Not the best song choice, although Simon did like it.

Anyway, Amanda Overmyer is definitely my girl this year, and I hope she lasts a while. She can actually rock, rather than just pretend to rock, and she seems very down-to-earth. (Her Q&A on the Idol website is great — "Q: What other talents do you have?" "A: Harley rider, good cook.") Plus, that hair! It's some sort of Elvira-meets-Debbie-Harry-meets-Concrete-Blonde look. Here she is singing "Baby Please Don't Go":

Alexandréa Lushington (I cannot believe she's only 17!) sang "Spinning Wheel" by Blood, Sweat and Tears, aka one of the first songs I learned all the lyrics to when I was a wee thing with a portable record player. I still have the 45 single. Yes, I'm old, but Alexandréa made that song young again.

Asia'h Epperson completely reimagined "Piece of My Heart." She was Simon's favorite, though he seemed to be much kinder in general in the second half of the show (except to Carly Smithson).

And the rest ... well, as Simon might say, they were forgettable. 'Cause I really don't remember them. But apparently a lot of them had the flu, so maybe next week will be better.

My pick to win the whole thing is Michael Johns, unless the already-had-a-record-deal backlash ruins him. And I think Leif Garrett, er, Garrett Haley, as well as David Cook, Kady Malloy and Amy Davis, should be worried about going home tonight. But I should know better than to try to predict these things!

Oh, one other thing: Will Danny Noriega and Colton Berry be allowed to come out, I wonder? So gay.

I wish I could be that sure about a female contestant or two, but even Harley-riding Amanda doesn't really trigger my gaydar. Not yet, anyway.

    nope, gaydar inactive.

yeah, none of the girls seem gay.. yet. mwahahah! those two boys are definitely, definitely oh so gay. they're really sweet though.

I have to say the girls were all mostly boring (so I just watched the recap), but that Asia'h chick and Alexandrea stuck out for me. To be honest, I'm not too hot about the rock goth nurse Amanda, and the rest of the girls had the same voice and same look. But the guys though! that little 16 year old guy with the short hair, and the dreadlocked dude were pretty damn cute. I wasn't planning to get hooked on American Idol, but now I am.

    Alexandrea

I totally agree with you on Alexandrea and Asia'h being two of the best girls. I want to like Amanda, I really do, but everytime she comes on stage I end up being disappointed in the end. Plus, I don't see the people she will appeal to being avid voters. I fear for her future on the show.

I will say that Alexandrea has tripped my gaydar. Perhaps I am alone in this? Or perhaps it is just wishful thinking? Who knows.

And can I just say that I LOVE Danny Noriega! Such a diva!

    Can't believe....

...that Simon didn't recognize the song!  C'mon!!  I'm sure chica originally heard it from AC/DC (considering her rock'n'roll roots) but c'mon!  Muddy Waters??  Yard Birds' version?!?!?  Whatever....I'm sure if Spears had done it he'd be in the know.

    Idol Season 7

I LOVE Brooke White!  Her voice is not a generic Idol sound.  It has this folksy, jazzy tone to it and it's great! That's much more interesting to watch and listen to.  I hope she goes far but I don't want her to win.  I want her to go out Daughtry! time so she can avoid 19E.

Alexandrea, I thought was gay or could be when she auditioned but then now I'm not so sure.

Danny...man...I don't like him.  I don't mean this in a bad way but he's too stereotypical (for a lack of a better term).  Great not on Idol but on Idol, I'm scared for him.  I don't want him to be Sanjaya-ed even though he already is on his way to be.  Colton, I like.  Less over-the-top.

And the "ringers".  I don't care if they have had a record deal before, as long as they're good.  And Josiah Leming, his original songs are very good.

    alexandrea...

too many damn syllables :) I keed...I liked her. I liked her stage presence and confidence. I just don't think she can SANG...she struggled with the higher notes IMO. There was something about Asia'h's voice that intrigued me. I want to hear more from her. Syesha is good. Amanda is alright. I just don't think 'rockers', especially female rockers, stand a chance on this show. All the blond girls looked a like. I still get them confused and I can do without all of them. the Carly Simon looking girl was just ok...not to be confused with the Carly chic from Ireland...who I like, but I don't understand the rules if she's allowed to compete having already had a record deal. oh well...

    Hat?

Why is that first Amanda wearing that weird hat?

    Go Ramiele!

I was disappointed overall but then again it is "American Idol"... *smirk*

I hope Joanne and Amy get the boot tonight.

In the battle of the interchangeable blondes, Alaina-Brooke def. Kristy Lee-Kady.

    Asia'h's bamboo earrings. *gag*

Lushington should've given Seacrest an easier explanation: "say it like Alexandria, Virginia, except it's ayy-yah, instead of eee-yah."

I wonder if Syesha (and Castro & Archuleta) are the only ones to previously appear on music-oriented TV programs.

Suspenders Always Make My Gaydar Ping...

...So even if Alexandrea isn't actually gay, I'm gonna be pretending she is this year.

Observation: both flamboyantly gay guys picked Elvis Presley songs. How adorable is Danny? His first audition song was "Proud Mary", that's just funny as hell. I think his way of coming out is saying, "This year, I decided to be more like myself instead of what I thought they wanted me to be." He's said that like 10 times or something.

    "Oh, one other thing: Will

"Oh, one other thing: Will Danny Noriega and Colton Berry be allowed to come out, I wonder? So gay."

Have you seen their introduction videos on the idol site? The only thing else they can do is say they miss their boyfriends or tell Simon they think he's hot.

Oddly enough, none of the guys scream straight to me. Wouldn't be surprised if all of them had a man.

    Tripping the gaydar...

Alexandréa totally pinged my gaydar when I saw her audition and last night it pinged some more.

My top gals: Amanda, Alexandréa, Asia'h, Syesha, Ramiele, and Carly (though she underperformed last night). I would be completely happy with this top six.

My top boys: Michael, David and Castro were the only ones that I liked, performance wise. I like Danny too.

The top talent that AI is proclaiming underwhelmed me these past two nights - we'll see if they live up to their hype as the most talented year ever!

    I love Sayesha, Amanda,

I love Sayesha, Amanda, Alexandrea and Asia and David Archeletta. Jason Castro has a Jack Johnson thing going on and he has amazing eyes, bless him. I like Carly Smithson but not the song she sang, I got what Simon was saying. Danny Noreaga is ok too.

My picks to go home Luke Menard and probs Garret, maybe Jason Yeager or David Hernandez not a huge fan of any of those yet

Girls Amy Davis, Kady Malloy or Brooke White maybe.

    Alexandréa

I just realized, looking at her picture, that she went to my school. I don't know how the hell I didn't realize it sooner cause someone had told me that someone from our school was going to be on american idol, but i didn't know it was her. Like i used to see her in the hall and even talked to her a couple of time. This is such a small world.

    I wish America was ready...

I think it would be great to hear Amanda cover a song by The Gossip (a la 'dressed in black'?).  Something about her voice makes me think she might be able to get to half of what Beth Ditto can do, and that would be phenomenal.

I'm also partial to Carly...but that's mainly because of the name and accent.
