Movie posters: "Miss Pettigrew," "Nim's Island" and more

It's movie poster time! (And you know what that really means: I'm too tired to actually write.)

First, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day:

The linster blogged about this one a while ago. In the poster, Frances McDormand doesn't really look shocked — more like intrigued. That could be wishful thinking on my part.

Next, Nim's Island:

I love the trailer and am looking forward to the movie, but why does Jodie Foster look so weird in the poster? Her face has been softened or something. I don't like it.

Next, Mercedes, which I hadn't heard of before today.

It's actually about the car company — the luxury cars were named after their creator's daughter. The film sounds like a grand Gatsby–esque romance, but IMDb.com doesn't seem to have any info about it. So who is that lovely lady? Maybe this is really just a lengthy car commercial and not an actual movie.

Next, Possession (Sarah Michelle Gellar):

The two shadows are definitely creepy. And Sarah's looming like a ghost, which could be promising or could just be a lazy poster technique. Read the linster's recent SMG update for the trailer.

Finally, Sleepwalking (Charlize Theron, AnnaSophia Robb):

This makes me really glad Phyllis wasn't wearing roller skates when she danced on the diving board in the most recent episode of The L Word. But the movie looks somewhat interesting — here's the trailer:

And now I'll stop sleepwalking through this post.

    WTF??

Please tell me that I don't see Abigail Breslin top-billed over Jodie Foster. How the hell did that happen?

And AnnaSofia Robb billed over Charlize Theron?

    Unbelievable.

    Who's the Top?

Even in Hollywood, occasionally they do things equitably and bill actors according to the size of the role and not according to their star power.  I'm guessing Abigail Breslin's role is larger than Charlize's--Oscar winner or not. Just a thought...

    Who's the Top redux

Sorry, that's Abigail over two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster, but the principle's the same.  And I do believe that Abigail is the ostensible star of that film.  Plus, Jodie was a child star. Her ego's intact enough to avoid stealing the limelight from an adolescent.

    Top Billing

I think it's a given that Jodie Foster is the biggest star in Nim's Island, but I think the studio is giving Abigail Breslin top billing to emphasize that this movie is okay for kids, and not some Jodie Foster movie that happens to have a kid in it. It's just smart marketing especially since IMO the trailer barely focuses on Nim at all, and it does feel like the movie is all about Jodie's character going on this journey to face her fears.

    Miss Petigrew

    Miss Petigrew's poster = priceless

    Jodie

She does look different - more like Laurel Holloman than herself. And dang, I had a brief heart flutter when I thought the Mercedes in the movie was Mercedes de Acosta. Now THAT would be a movie!

    That doesn't look like Jodie

It looks like Emma Thompson and Cate Blanchette's love child. Not that this would be a bad combo...but it's not Jodie.

Then again, Gerard Butler looks like Bill Pullman channelling Woody Harrelson.

Abagail Beslin looks like she's been animed and back.

No one escapes that poster with representational image intact.
