Mary Stuart and Kristen Stewart: Two lesbian icons for the price of one

What ever happened to Mary Stuart Masterson? I first adored her when she donned those fingerless gloves in Some Kind of Wonderful (all the better to spin those drumsticks with). I know Watts supposedly wanted Keith (Eric Stoltz) in that film, but I still can't believe she didn't end up with Amanda (Lea Thompson).

And then I couldn't help but swoon when she courted Mary-Louise Parker in Fried Green Tomatoes. Such a bee charmer.

(I'm still bitter about the fact that Idgie and Ruth aren't explicitly a couple in the movie, the way they are in the book. So unfair.)

But then Mary Stuart seemed to disappear — behind the camera, as it turns out. AfterEllen commenter extraordinaire Jennifer from Pittsburgh pointed out that Masterson's film The Cake Eaters screens at the Tribeca Film Festival this week. And — bonus! — it stars Kristen Stewart, who was recently seen in Panic Room with Jodie Foster, and who has also been getting some attention in the AfterEllen forums.

Here's Kristen Stewart in Panic Room:

And here she is in In the Land of Women, which hit theaters this past weekend:

Pay attention, Kristen — Ms. Masterson can teach you a lot about charming the ladies. I mean, about the movie biz.

    Always Loved

Mary Stuart. Since Fried Green Tomatos, she's been in the Top Ten. She was in SVU, too. Long, dark hair. Did I swoon, or what? I think it's fantastic that she's branched out to directing and look forward to catching her work!

    Cheers, ScribGrrl!

    ha!

i think it's funny that my thread got mentioned. awesome! and that kristen stewart is now being mentioned as a "lesbian icon" haha. interesting....

kristen stewart is hot. weird thing though: i just found out that my kid brother thinks so as well! and why not? apparently she has a wide range of appeal. she's even being talked about constantly as being a major "rising star" or something. which sounds so weird, considering she doesn't seem the type. but hey, if that means more roles in bigger movies, i'm all for it!

    Mary Stuart Masterson

I always wondered what happened to her. I loved Fried Greem Tomatoes. I wonder if she is a lesbian in real life?
    TheWeyrd1's picture

Of course this could be meaningless...

I believe...though I did not bother to go out on the WWW to verify it...that she was married...and may still be...to a man... Sigh....

So then I just had to check

And here is what I found at IMBD regarding her marital status

    Spouse

    Damon Santostefano (20 May 2000 - 2004) (divorced)
    George Carl Francisco (25 May 1990 - 1992) (divorced)

    So...two divorces...hmmmmmmmm

    .....speechless....

    Almost.

Wow....just wow..... I.... I didnt realize that someone could get so hot in only 5 years. *prays to the lesbians gods* I hope she is gay... not for me of course but for lesbian kind!

Also, I have never read the fried green tomatoes book but definitely love the movie...ive been in arguments with people over whether they actually WERE together...now I know the truth.

    Some Kind of Really Gay

Only in John Hughes's mind could that character in Some Kind of Wonderful have been anything other than gay, gay, gay.

    Hellooow...

I definitely had a crush on Mary Stuart back in the days (whether I fully realized it or not...) And I remember part of a dialogue between her (Watts) and Keith (Eric Stolz) about boobs (her aunt (or her mother?) has big boobs and Watts was spared the same fate:

    Keith: "So, what happened?"

    Watts: "I got lucky."

    *LOL*

Oh yea, Kristen Stewart is hot... and 17 fer chrissakes *gasp* I'd better avert my eyes to something not underaged anymore ;p

    SVU

Mary Stuart can be seen occasionally popping up on Law and Order, SVU, as the ex-cop turned psychiatrist. She also appeared on Broadway, in Nine, with Antonio Banderas. I was lucky enough to catch her in that. Who knew she could sing?

    so in love

As a teeny bopper I was so in love with Watts, and then of course Idgie.  Some Kind of Wonderful was the first time I ever heard the word "lesbian".  Methinks Duncan might have been onto something there, highschool taunting aside.

    Fried Green book on tape

It is definitely worth it to experience the Fried Green Tomatoes book, but if you can't sit down long enough to read it, the author, Fanny Flagg, reads it on tape/CD.  It saved my life on a road trip.  Worth buying.  Fanny does a fantastic job reading all the characters and the relationship development is so much more than in the movie.  I've always considered adapting the book into a play.....

    Nine - the musical

it was just announced that Rob Marshall is adapting the musical NINE into a movie - oh please oh please oh please let Mary Stuart be in it.....

    it's funny

I created a thread on the spashley forum about Kristen Stewart. I just couldn't shake this vibe I kept getting from her. So I asked the members there what they thought of her. Like 2 weeks later, I saw your thread here about her and busted out laughing. I couldn't believe it! I wasn't the only one getting the "oh so " familiar vibe from her. :o)  ......I can't believe she just turned 17 a couple few weeks ago. :o(   (jailbait)

Oh well...I'll just have to control my roaming thoughts. BTW Mary Stuart was too cool to me when I was younger *sign* I just loved her relationship in "Fried Green Tomatoes" I didn't care what people said the feelings between Idgie and Ruth were palpable (even if the writers/director tried to wipe them out).

p.s. The Spashley fans love Kristen too!

    Kristen Stewart & Bette

Kristen Stewart was also in a movie with Jennifer Beals, Catch That Kid.  Jennifer played her mother.  It was a kids movie, but as a fan of both women, it was enjoyable enough.

    Is it just me?

Or does Kristen Stewart resemble Mary Stuart Masterson enough to be her daughter.  I know, I know, I'm not ready to think of Idgie with a 17 year old daughter, but when I saw the pictures together, I was surprised.

    I wonder if she knows

Ok so we all get the vibe from her, and we've been speculating since she was 16...I wonder if she knows about all the hype and hypothesizing about her sexuality going on in the lesbian community...i mean for god sakes, we're already hailing her a "lesbian icon"   I wonder what she thinks about all this....

    Fried Green Tomatoes Fan

I never read the book but I absolutely loved the movie!  It's an ultimate, all time favorite and I always saw the chemistry between Idgie and Ruth.  Initially Ruth and Buddy had eyes for one another, I never believed that.  There was more chemistry and sweetness between Ruth and Idgie!  Those two had nothing but love for one another til the day Ruth died.  I always thought that Ruth and Idgie were soulmates.

    The Book

I recommend the book.  Ruth and Buddy were never a couple in the book.  It was always just between her and Idgy.  The book delves deeper into the rest of the community's lives.  It may be just me, but I love Fannie Flagg's style of writing.

    Not Just You

The book is wonderful. There's a line in it that I still use when I'm fed up with someone: When the phone's not ringing it's me not calling ;)

    Fannie Flagg

I love Fannie Flagg's books as well.  I was disappointed in the differences from book to movie with Fried Green Tomatoes.  But the movie stands by itself as a favorite and I can go to the book for the extras.  Fannie, herself, adapted the book to a screenplay for the movie and I think she wanted something that the mainstream could accept while giving lesbians something to talk about.

    MARY STUART AND KRISTEN

I too am a MSM fan...many don't know that she is the goddaughter of Fannie Flagg, a lesbian who wrote Fried Green Tomatoes. Mary's parents are acting coaches who are well know in showbiz, and it was nice to see her bring Fannie's story to the big screen. Not making any speculation on her sexuality, but I've always enjoyed her acting. After not seeing her onscreen for a while, it was nice to see her on Law and Order SVU...according to the storyline her character and Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) were at the police academy together....is it me, or did I get the feeling that maybe MSM's character and Olivia were more than just friends during their academy days????

As for Kirsten Stewart, that young lady has grown up quite nicely....yes, she too could very well be the next icon!!!! Lovely young thing she is..she will break a few hearts before she is done.

    Fried Green Tomatos

Is my all time favourite book. I was bitterly disappointed, however, when I tried some of the recipes at the back of the book and made myself quite ill. Perhaps fried green tomatos and I do not mix. Fortunatly, the book and I do!
    StarryMag's picture

    MSM & Fannie Flagg

Wow, I never knew the two were related at all.  Wonder if that's actually how MSM got cast, a little nepotism.  Whatever the reason, she's incredible in the film and I wish she got a lot more accolades from it!

    Kristen

Yea. I adore her. She may give off a lesbian vibe but as we write this she's probably thinking about changing her look alltogether. lol.

    sorry dear.

I thought I was the only one getting the gay vibe from Kristen.
