How can I resist it? New "Mamma Mia!" trailer

Last night during Dancing With the Stars, the new trailer for Mamma Mia! premiered. The teaser trailer was pretty good, but the full-length one? My dancing shoes are already on!

The stage musical is ridiculous, but also ridiculously enjoyable, and it looks like the movie will fit that same groove. As if the ABBA soundtrack (22 songs!) weren't enough — and, really, what's better than ABBA? — we get Meryl Streep doing pratfalls in her overalls. That alone is worth the ticket price.

Meryl seems to be having a great time in general, what with all the dancing and drinking and screwball comedy. I can never decide which I like better: dramatic Meryl or comedic Meryl. Mamma Mia! might just give us both. She's funny, she's moving, she's handy around the house!

And I had forgotten that Christine Baranski is in Mamma Mia! She plays one of Meryl's BFFs.

Julie Walters plays the other BFF. I don't think I've seen Walters be funny and light yet — mostly I remember her being disturbing yet sympathetic in Sister, My Sister.

And Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Veronica Mars) seems pretty perfect for the role of the soon-to-be-wed daughter in search of a dad.

But the best thing about the new trailer is all the gleeful dancing.

Despite the disco, the story lines are inexorably straight. The film is all about husbands and dads. And yet it's also all about female bonding, in the best '80s-chick-flick sense of that term.

Figure in the beauty of Greece — which almost rivals Meryl's — and it looks like a guaranteed hit.

Greece, weddings, whatever — I'll be there for the ABBA. And the dancing. And the Meryl. Is it summer yet?

    ABBA Tastic

Friends saw the Broadway show and raved about it.  Can't wait to see the movie!!

    Love Streep and Baranski!

    I'm a total geek but

the three men in this film who are supposed to be "paired" with Meryl Streep are all younger than her. Can I get a gigantic HURRAH!? I'm so sick of seeing 20 year old actresses getting paired with 40 year old men (yes, I know Johnny Depp is cute but still...) and for Meryl Streep to be acting with people of roughly her own age is awesome.

Also most of the Julie Walters films I've seen her in are cute and light and funny - Driving Lessons? erm, Harry Potter? and even though Calendar Girls was sad, it was still an uplifting movie. And it had naked Helen Mirren and Celia Imrie. Hehh.

    Can not wait!

Wow that looks even better then i ever could have imagined! It just reconfirmed my complete and utter love for Meryl, ill see anything that womans in and then see it again and again and well again, lol. Plus Amanda Seyfried is really making some nice choices, Mean Girls, Big Love and now Mamma Mia, that girl has a good eye.

Just one look and i can hear a bell ring, one more look and i forget everything (else:D). Mamma Mia!

    Yay!

Meryl Streep + ABBA = The quintessential chick flick.

    I love it.  :D

I saw the show on Broadway

I saw the show on Broadway and thought it was pretty much crap, although the music is a lot of fun. I'm sure I'll see the movie though, if only to see Meryl Streep dance & sing.

    Ooooh Myyyy Gooooddd!

That pretty much describes how I feel. I'm not even a christian:p I'm sooo looking forward to this. Meryl is and always be my favourite! And she looks damn good (when does she not?!) in this film. Plus Colin and Julie! Gee, it doesn't get any better than that! (well, of course I know a way how it could be better, but let's no go there:p)

And what do you mean you haven't seen Julie fun and light yet? Haven't you seen Harry Potter or Billy Elliot?

...or Julie Walters in Calendar Girls?

She was a hoot in that, along with the lovely Dame Mirren.

    I'm, like, almost

I'm, like, almost illogically excited for this movie. Because it's Meryl. Dancing around in her overalls. In Greece. Honestly, where can you go wrong? I love Meryl a little too much, so the thought of seeing her in something where she's delightful and goofy makes me overjoyed. Not to mention, having seen the stage show, I cannot WAIT to see what the finale looks like... :P

Also, when I saw the show I thought the Julie Walters character was definitely a lez. Who knows?

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    Father-Daughter Bonding

My dad and I have a date to see this movie. It's ridiculous how giddy we are about it. It was a cause of great worry for my brothers (see the BBC story about how "gay" is the top insult in schools http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7289390.stm) when dad saw the musical for the 3rd time in London. So we're excited, and not even bloody Colin Firth will keep us away.

(Don't ask and Marlene won't tell)

    Julie Walters

Julie Walters definitely excels at funny and light - just look at Dinnerladies or Acorn Antiques. There's even Acorn Antiques the Musical now too:

    Mama Mia!

Wow this looks good! Thanks for posting the trailor! I saw the musical in Vegas a few years ago, and I totally loved it. I went to it with my mom and she was standing up dancing in the asles, it was slightly embarassing, but totally fun. The story actually fits to the songs really well. As if I wasn't already looking forward to summer...

    woo!

I've seen this show in Ohio and Las Vegas and I love it! It's so fun to have ABBA music blasting through live theatre haha

I was with my family when we saw this trailer before one of the many movies we saw in December and the first 2 cords of "Mama Mia" had every single one of us flipping out. I'm sure we were the most obnoxious bunch for those four minutes hahaha

The cast is great and I can't wait to see it!!!! :)

    I think Meryl Streep is

I think Meryl Streep is such a woman's woman. She's amazing.

No one understood my admiration for her work or my massive crush on her until I joined the gay community. Lesbians really do have the best taste in women.

    What a coincidence..

...I've just heard the last bars of the final song of the Mamma Mia production.  I work in an Arena in Northern Ireland and we are in our second week of a 3 week run of the show.  I'm working late and as my offices are under the seats of the Arena I've heard the show about the 8 times already.  I've also seen it twice,  I missed the tour when it was here two years ago (I didn't work here then) and I'm so glad I decided to go this time.  It may be cheesy but it is fantastic, the actors were amazing (particularly the one playing the mother) and no one can resist that music.  I did wonder how they were going to work the songs into the story but it's done wonderfully.

Before seeing the stage show I would only have considered the movie based on the great female leads but now I know the story I'm definitely going to see this on the big screen.

Re: Julie Walters, has anyone seen Stepping Out with Julie, Liza Minnelli and Jane Krakowski (of Ally McBeal and 30 rock fame)??  Absolutely wonderful, one of my all time favourite films.  I also agree with the above comment about Julie in all of Victoria Woods shows...classics.

I have a dream... and it's coming true this summer!

I discovered ABBA in elementary school where they would play 'I have a dream' for the Rememberance day assembly. I became a fan in jr. high when I figured out those pop bands aren't good, they just cover really good ABBA songs.

I saw this musical twice, and am so glad that musicals are making a comeback in films!!! This is going to be so awesome, there is no way they can scre this one up. The casting looks unbelievable.
Yay for all ABBA fans out there!

from 1983...the BEST Julie Walters movie ever! Everyone should go rent it...NOW! :D

Oh...yeah--back to the topic. Meryl is adorable. ABBA makes me laugh--in a good way. Mama Mia!, here I come.

    MAMMA MIA THIS MOVIE ROCKED!

I just got home and I am as giddy as I was with the play(course I have seen that three times) I was unsure until they got to Dancing Queen..then I was TOTALLY sold!(with the exception of Brosnan's singing..whooo boy)

Loved the cameos by Benny and Bjorn! Nice touch!

Baranski and Walters are FANTASTIC! And Amanda is freaking adorable! And i have a total crush on Ashley Lilley who plays one of her bridesmaids...SO CUTE!

By the end of the film it was all I could do to not stand up and start dancing and singing. This goes into my top musicals...I can't wait to take it home. Until then..ABBA in full rotation!!
