"Juno": Ellen Page takes on mythic proportionsYou've probably come across some headlines about the indie film Juno, starring Ellen Page (Hard Candy, X-Men 3). The critics adore it — they're calling it "a gust of fresh air"; "a film bristling with vitality and heart"; a movie that sounds "not a single false note." It's been nominated for a Spirit Award and is generating some early Oscar buzz. [Warning: Minor spoilers.]
The box office is just as taken with the film. Even though Juno opened on just seven screens this past weekend, it beat Little Miss Sunshine's first weekend and averaged a whopping $59,124 per screen (Enchanted, for example, averaged $9,233 per screen during its opening weekend). I'll happily jump on this particular bandwagon. Juno is a moving, charming film, and Ellen Page is fantastic in it. And I mean that both in the sense of "excellent" and in the sense of "based on fantasy." You can't really call the movie realistic, and that's part of why it's so endearing. Who wouldn't like to live in a world where parents and stepparents are supportive and fun, teenagers are both wiseass and wise, and women respect themselves and each other? I much prefer that to realism. About midway through the film, Juno explains the origin of her name: Her dad was into myths at the time, so he named her after one of Zeus' wives — the "really beautiful and really mean" one. Juno's not mean, but she's definitely beautiful and mythical. Although I suppose a lot of teenagers will try to talk like Juno after they've seen this film, I doubt her brand of patter is common. I don't even know any adults who are as consistently quick-witted as she is.
But that's not a criticism. I like it when movies give us something to aspire to, and I do aspire to love as sincerely and live as honestly as Juno does. And to quip so brilliantly, of course. The supporting cast is great too: Olivia Thirlby has a bright future; Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons make hilarious, awesome parents; Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman are fascinating; and how cute is Michael Cera?
And of course I loved the feminism of the film. Slate.com says Juno is "Knocked Up from the girl's point of view." And that's what's feminist about it — it doesn't really make any statements, but it does put women at the center of the story. And that's still a rare thing. If I were a teenager, I'd probably have a giant crush on Juno, and therefore on Ellen Page. She seems smart and cool, judging by the recent profile in New York magazine. The article is a very good read; here are some excerpts:
Page herself could become a big star. I'll enjoy watching her career unfold. She has a couple of films on deck before Jack and Diane, aka the lesbian werewolf movie. Meanwhile, I'm going to download the Juno soundtrack and quote the film as often as possible. Except every quote I can think of at the moment would sound weird out of context. That seems very fitting somehow. Submitted by on December 11, 2007 - 9:00am. |

Waiting with you
the movie sounds like a lot
I adore (read: have a small crush on) Ellen Page ever since I saw Hard Candy (she was sooow freakily good in it!), so I'm looking forward to see more movies with her in it =)
of course she's cool!
... she's from Nova Scotia! :)
It all started with a chair...
And ended with my HUGE crush on Ellen Page. I think she is absolutely phenomenal in this film-- so much so that I've seen it twice already. She's incredibly bright, gifted, and beautiful and I can't wait to see her play opposite Olivia Thirlby in "Jack & Diane." Plus, she had a heavy hand in the soundtrack, which is also wonderful. It's definitely a must see.
Go. Now. Seriously.
i am so stoked
that this movie finally got made. i used to read Diablo Cody's blog religiously and she was about the third blogger i loved that stopped blogging to "focus on real writing blahdy blah" and i thought, well i'll never hear from that person again. but she MADE IT. and in a big way. and for me in even a bigger way because she's written the kind of movie that's not super mainstream drivel.
I havent seen the movie,
I havent seen the movie, but Ellen Page had at "Hard Candy", if the movie and Ellen Page are like the trailers and the critics say, then I will not be surprised if there are Oscars in their way.

First time I saw a commercial for it, I said two things. What is this? and Im see it.
I cannot wait for break, so I will be somewhere near a theater that plays it.
Jennifer Garner
Not to take away from Ellen Page (who was friggin' hilarious), but Jennifer Garner did a suprisingly great job. I mean, I loved her in Alias, but even I didn't think she'd perform the way she did in Juno.
I think that her storyline is what made the movie for me...
Looking forward to seeing this one...
"Think Sideways"
I'm excited
Sooo, giant crush on Ellen Page since Hard Candy. She's so awesome. Anyways, the movie looks really great, especially because Michael Cera's in it too (looove him).
Ellen a bit like Juno
Ellen has admitted in an interview "Yes, I am a bit like Juno"

And Diablo Cody, screenwriter: this was her FIRST screenplay! Bloody hell! I look forward to her future writing. What I've seen of the dialogue she writes, unbelievably sharp, quick witted and insightful. Here's an interview with her and Ellen.

Both of them will be going far, and I would love to see them collaborating again in the not too distant future.
Juno the Goddess
I'm not trying to be annoying, but I thought Juno was the Roman version of Hera, which would make her the wife of Jupiter, not Zeus. I could be wrong, of course.
Little things bother me sometimes... But the movie sounds good!
right you are
Don't worry, I don't blame you!
I know you were just quoting, I just wanted to sound smart. I'm totally into Greek mythology, and I've been trying to self-study it for a while, so...
Juno was called Hera by
Juno was called Hera by the Greeks. She was queen of the gods. Juno was the sister and wife of the ruler of the gods, Jupiter, and the mother of Hebe, Vulcan and Mars, one of the most important Roman deities. She was also a member of the Capitoline along with Jupiter and Minerva....(Minerva) Not to be confused with the rock band of the same name....hope that helps
