Julie Andrews, still sublime

Like the rest of the world, Julie Andrews misses her voice.

In a new interview, Andrews confesses that she still feels the loss of her "freak four-octave voice." I for one consider it an extreme tragedy that her magnificent instrument was taken away when she should have had years of singing left. It's an unimaginable injustice — no matter how big the settlement was. But she seems to be coping pretty well, I guess. She's now writing children's books and directing.

"My daughter, the one that I write with, said something so lovely. I was bemoaning the fact that I wasn’t singing and how much I missed it. And she said, 'Mom, you’ve just found a different way of using your voice by writing.' It made me feel so much better. ... I do miss singing with an orchestra, the beauty of it all. I miss the music. But at least I am able to still contribute, which is lovely.”

Sigh. Yes, and Andrews herself is still lovely. When I was a kid, I was sure she was gay. She just had to be: I loved her too much. I thought the sheer force of my affection might make her a lesbian. Besides, how could she look this good in a tuxedo and not be gay? I wanted her to sweep me off my feet and teach me the do-re-mi's of sapphic bliss.

I'm sure that if Google had existed when I first fell in love with Andrews, I would have Googled "Julie Andrews lesbian" every day. Now, that search brings you rumors of a long-term affair with Carol Burnett (that's stupid — I think they'd happily acknowledge that if it were true) and lists of gay and lesbian icons.

She certainly does have icon status. I remember seeing a book years ago in which the author had spliced herself into scenes from old movies, including the "Something Good" dance in the gazebo in The Sound of Music.

I've since come to accept Andrews' heterosexuality, but not the loss of her singing voice. I don't think I ever will. And I don't want crumbs like these:

Though her singing career is behind her, Andrews does get to hum a tune in “Shrek the Third.” In a dizzy moment for Queen Lillian, she trills through a few bars of “My Favorite Things,” one of the songs Andrews belted out in “The Sound of Music.” “It felt like a charmingly wicked thing to do,” Andrews said.

Sigh. Shrek the Third, which looks to be one of the most female-friendly summer releases, opens this Friday.

    my fair lady

julie andrews is the best.  if i had to name the top female vocalists of all time, julie andrews would be at the top of the list, in addition to the likes of ella fitzgerald, stevie nicks, and lea salonga.  absolutely fantastic voice and, as you note, oh so beautiful!  i'm as much in love with her as ever!

i always thought it was a shame that she never got to play the film version of my fair lady.  audrey hepburn was beautiful and talented, but of course, she didn't have the vocal chops to do the part justice.  so marnie nixon's voice was dubbed for hers, and to this day, i think that's just totally atrocious.  marnie nixon's voice could hit the high  notes, but it was just so shrill.  it almost ruins the film experience for me.  but i still love rex harrison and the lerner & loewe score enough to more than make up for this.

incidentally, marnie nixon actually had an onscreen role and a singing part in the sound of music, which was a major julie andrews star vehicle.  she's one of the nuns who sings "how do you solve a problem like maria?"  i think she played sister sophia.

anyhow, thanks for posting this youtube clip from the dinah shore show.  i love it!  you should watch the videos for julie andrews and gene kelly performing together.  it's so sweet and fun to watch!

    I felt like a pervert

when I fell in love with "Maria" from the Sound of music.  She was probably the first real crush I felt for someone.  I still love her.  I was lucky to see her performance in Victor Victoria on Broadway... boy! Her legs at 60 were just incredibly good looking!!!I jus watched Victor/Victoria the other night and found the commentary track with her and Blake Edwards... her husband! But one can always dream of having an affair with her, as I do all the time!

    The Love of my life

I've been in love with the same girl since I was six, my dearest Julie. From constantly listening to her original broadway cast recording of My Fair Lady on vinyl throughout my entire life, to seeing her twirl on a mountain top and having her as a nanny to sing me to sleep. As I grew up I got to know the Americanization of Emily one of her best, and my first introduction to all things gay and jazzy in victor/victoria. Finally I saw her comedic genius and her boobies(almost) in the hilarious and somewhat concerning Star! There's a myriad of others of course, but those are the ones that stick out. I may be a young'un but I know a good'un when I see'un, regardless of age- wink wink nudge nudge to all you older women out there- I'm single dontcha know :) But my heart will always belong to one Julie Andrews.

    The hills are alive.

What a beautiful beautiful lady!! I thought I was the only girl on the planet to have had a crush on Julie Andrews... I must have watched "The Sound of Music" at least a thousand times. Those were the days...sigh!

    When I was 5

When I was 5, I was absolutely convinced that I wanted to be a nun. Hang out with Maria all day? Yes please! I still kinda want to be a nun . . . but my motivations are somewhat different now ;-).

    I loved her too!

Oh, my God, as always I thought I was the only one who had a huge crush on her. I was totally in love with Victoria (as Victor), and hated of course, when she fell in love with King Marchand. I watched that movie so many time...  (even now :S). As a faithfull fan I also swooned to the Sound of Music, praying to God at night, that she would be mine and that she would leave the captain. (it didn't happen)!. I even liked her in Mary Poppins, but I was a bit older when I got my hands on that movie, and I kind of said I didn't like it, but would encourage my little sister to watch it millions of times so I would too. I even read her book on the Wangdoodles... yes, I am a true fan, and as a young adult, I dug deep into the broadway musicals, and started to collect everything I could find where she sang. And yes I admit it!!! I tried to sing along too and would get frustrated when I could'nt hit the HIGH notes with her... damn it!
