The joys of Hulu.com

Need something to help you pass the time today or usher in the weekend? Look no further: Hulu.com is here.

The new video site from NBC Universal and News Corp was officially launched last week, and if you haven't checked it out yet, you're missing something marvelous. The TV shows — which are very high quality and mostly full episodes — are from NBC, FOX, and the various affiliated cable networks like Bravo, FX, Sci Fi, Sundance and Oxygen. And the site offers movies, too (yes, full movies). And all of this for free (with occasional commercials). On demand.

Do I sound amazed? I kind of am. Here are some of the things I've been salivating over so far. (One caveat: Hulu.com is only available to U.S. users. Openhulu.com, after it has been updated, will provide access to users outside the U.S.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Hulu has only Seasons 1 and 2 of Buffy right now, but what a great excuse to revisit the whole series from the beginning.

30 Rock

I can never decide who I love more: Tina Fey or Liz Lemon. Luckily, we don't have to choose.

Picket Fences

I loved this show when it first aired in the late '90s. Hulu has Season 1, including "Sugar & Spice," the episode in which Kimberly (Holly Marie Combs) kisses her friend Lisa (Alexondra Lee). I remember it well!

She Spies

I missed this Natasha Henstridge action series the first time around. Now I can find out whether it's any good.

Fight Girls

I missed this one too. Gina Carano (Crush from American Gladiators) is in it!

Chicago Hope

I love love love Christine Lahti, though she wasn't in Season 1, and that's all Hulu has right now. Still, this show was great in general.

The Facts of Life

Unfortunately, Hulu has clips right now, not full episodes, but still. You take the good, you take the bad!

Fame

Aw, yeah! "You want fame? Well, fame costs. And right here's where you start paying. In sweat."

Life

Sarah Shahi. On your computer. Whenever you want her.

Wow, I can't go on ... there are so many others. View the alphabetical list of shows and movies for these and more, and get ready to do nothing but watch Hulu this afternoon!

Scribe, now I am definitely going to lose my job. When I get fired and lose my house can I come to your place and sleep on the couch?
    scribegrrrl's picture

    ha ha

Sure, if all you need is a computer to watch Hulu on and the occasional bowl of chili ...
    gypsywee's picture

    Perfect!

...chili and a computer—what more could I ask for. :D Thanks!

    concerning this post...

    1) I applaud any and all excuses to post photos of Tina Fey

    2) I love that Hulu has Cleopatra 2525. Such a bad show, but they know it, and somehow make it utterly fun & mesmerizing. Plus, Gina Torres. ::sigh::

    sami_kaye's picture

    Love

I used to love that show. I would watch it every Saturday at 3 on Global.  I think either before or after Cleopatra 2525 was Jack of All Trades.  I never used to watch that though.

    Cleopatra 2525

And Victoria Pratt. Plus a few episodes with Danielle Cormack as Raina, the woman who messes with people's minds by getting into them. I've read somewhere that she modeled that character after Lucy's performances as Xena.

    omg! Greatest. Idea. EVER!

this is heaven! I LOVED She Spies, as corny as it could be. Oh and Buffy, 30 Rock, AND Picket Fences?!?! Amazing. Does anyone know how long its going to be free? I can't imagine that it will stay this way...

Thanks for passing this gem along!

    scribegrrrl's picture

    I think it's just free

Since there are commercials, it's ad-supported. I don't think there are any plans to charge for it.

smh... and to think I brought my work HOME with me this weekend. Well, that foolish idea is clearly out the window.

I may have to scrap it out with Gypsy for that chili bowl.

    Arrested D!

So i have found that they have all 3 seasons of arrested development on hulu.com!! i let my best friend borrow my dvd's so she'd know what i'm talking about half the time... and now we spend 75% of our lives quoting it back and forth =)

now's the time to get into it if you've never given it a chance before!

    Hulu..

Since I love my job, I don't think I'll sacrifice it for Hulu, BUT I might grow old and completely lonely for never going out again.........so Scribegrrrl's, hope you feel just a tiny bit guilty?

    You Too, Can Watch K-Pax

Yeah...maybe AfterEllen should look into starting up ...HuLes or something. (also, beware, I have not googled that- who knows what would come up) I guess my point is, I watch almost all of my video online. I also actively seek out lesbian content (which is why I've been on this site for like...forever). Maybe I'm just cynical, but I think Hulu will not have anything more than full-length reruns and the mainstream...at least for a while. In the meantime, I'm beggin' AE to find a solid broadband solution for their own vlogs. I do love them so...but the last few weeks have been painful in the buffering zone. I'm also realistic...broadband video serving is incredibly expensive for companies to shoulder.

    How 'bout that Writer's Strike?

Hulu...the piece of the pie writers were striking for...

Hey, no mention that Mulholland Drive is available in Movies?

Hulu probably isn't going to charge viewers. You can already watch unlimited movies and tv shows online at Netflix for 9 bucks a month. It looks like Hulu is offerring different ones though. Netflix has Xena, BSG, L-Word and Weeds, but not Buffy.

    Traveler's picture

    They have National Geographic shows!

Biggest guilty pleasure of my life - travel shows. Sigh ... I really, really didn't need to know about this now that I can "borrow" me some wifi.
    imthey's picture

    Yeah...

I've been a HULU member since January 2007, and I love that there is so much available to watch (and without a fee).

I missed (thanks to a DVR glitch) the 2 hour Knight Rider movie that was on a while back, so I went to HULU and found it. I was able to watch the whole movie with minimal commercial interruption (and it was actually pretty good).

I'm glad that others are starting to catch on to this gem of a website.

Speaking of guilty pleasures... I own Cleopatra 2525 on DVD as well as all 3 seasons of Mutant X because of my adoration of Victoria Pratt!

I did buy season 1 of Picket Fences on DVD and was happy that the lighting in the "Sugar and Spice" episode was far better than when it first aired on TV! It was Holly Marie Combs that had me watching all those years of Charmed

I'm realizing that the more I read of my own words that I wrote... I really do spend far too much time locked up inside and staring at a screen, be it a TV screen or a computer screen!

    LOVE HULU

been a member for quite awhile and it kicks ass. it was slow adding new material at first but now it's chock full of shows and movies i'm slowly working my way through.

used to be i hated not having cable, now i have hulu.

    kshadow8's picture

    Can anyone tell me ...

I'm in Australia, so it's not available to me yet. However, before I get all excited about it, can anyone tell me if subtitles or captions are available on the site? I was so excited when NBC announced that it would start offering captioned episodes online, only to be disappointed that I couldn't access it due to my location. Most of the time I don't mind being Deaf, but with all the things now available online these days, there's a sense of being left behind. I don't even get to enjoy all the vlogs on afterellen!

So PLEASE someone tell me that hulu has captions/subtitles!!!! *fingers crossed*

    beazerkat's picture

    Sweet!

Thanks for the info scribegrrl.  All 52 eps of Arrested Devlopment (RIP) plus clips for me to put on my myspace.  I have the DVDs but now I can watch it anywhere (err in this country I guess).  Oh and I'm finally getting around to watching Firefly since they have the whole series.  They also have the new Battlestar Galactica specials (also on scifi.com) which aren't even airing until this Friday.  Who the frack needs cable?

    I'm tired of

pictures of Tina Fey.  I don't know why, just one of the Facts of (my) Life.

Do programs with a housekeeper ever go wrong?

If you love Hulu, then also try...

SurfTheChannel.com.  They have tons of free TV shows and movies.  Best part is, they have ALL 5 seasons of "The L Word" you can watch for free.  Ah, heaven.  :-)
