From gimmick to gifted: Kate Mulgrew, Seven of Nine and padded bras

Sometimes it's hard for me to explain exactly why I love something. For example, I can tell you that I like guitars and women who can sing, but that doesn't really explain why I love Heart. Or I can tell you that I like cheese and beans and guacamole, but that doesn't fully capture my love of Mexican food.

Other times, though, it's easy. I can tell you exactly why I love Star Trek: Voyager, and I can do it with one word: Janeway.

It just doesn't get better than Kate Mulgrew in uniform, running a tight ship, drinking coffee, chatting with Leonardo da Vinci on the holodeck or helping Seven of Nine (make that Annika) embrace her humanity. That last thing was especially fascinating, and has inspired reams of fan fic (I recommend G.L. Dartt's stories if you haven't read them).

But in a recent interview with the Trekdom bloggers, Star Trek: Voyager doctor Robert Picardo reveals that the Captain/Borg interactions weren't always so warm. Mulgrew wasn't very keen on Seven at first:

Trekdom: [Mulgrew] was very vocal about her disappointment and frustration with the decision to replace Kes [with Seven of Nine], because, on some level, she thought it was a “tits and ass gimmick” in putting a cat suit on a supposedly progressive show with a strong female character.
Picardo: I agree with that. I had the same initial reaction that Kate did. We went on the air as a feminist statement, with a female captain judged on her own merits, which has nothing to do with her sex. She gets the job because she is the best for the job. Then suddenly, to have a new character that, let’s face it, especially in that silver outfit, looked like a Vegas showgirl without the headdress. So, I certainly understand Kate’s initial concerns, but all of us became impressed with Jeri’s performance.

Picardo also addresses the rumor that Mulgrew once "stormed into one of the producer’s offices, dropped a padded bra on the desk, and announced in a captain-like fashion, 'No! I’m not wearing this!'"

Picardo: It sounds like something Kate would say. I certainly can’t corroborate the story. Kate is just wonderfully outspoken. She is a natural leader. Thank God she came along ... she just stepped in, took the reins, and took over. Thank God for her! We all owe [the] fact that we spent seven years on the air to that kind of ... aplomb!

Indeed. It always seemed clear that Mulgrew was a lot like Janeway — or maybe that was just more fantasizing on my part. Either way, it's nice to have confirmation.

Visit Trekdom for the full interview. I'm off to read some fan fic while listening to Heart and eating tacos.

    i totally dug voyager, too!

but admitting this to a bona fide trekkie, as i have done, is the worst thing one can do because it leads the way to a nerdy lecture as to why voyager is actually the worst of the star trek franchises.

something about the first rule of science fiction/star trek being that you can't resort to time travel to fix all your problem plots and tie up loose ends.

i have to admit, the use of time travel and present-janeway meeting future janeway to help the present-crew get out of the delta quadrant was kinda lame.  seven years of aimless space ambling?  and ALL it took for them to get home was TIME-TRAVEL?!

but i guess for the non-trekkies who watched voyager, it's more about the eye-candy.  hey, i can admit to that!

    On web stories

If you like Kathryn Janeway maybe you should have a look at Fletcher DeLancey’s stories. They can be reached at: webpages.charter.net/pastimperfect/index.htm

Janeway is paired with another kick-ass lady, that gives her the fight of her life (like a good partner should). Worry not, Seven is not left alone. (Oh, no, indeed!)

Just be prepared to sit in front of the monitor for a long time since these stories have it all: action, drama, romance and, oh my, even sex. (In just the right amount.) Plus, they are really well written (on that I include the plot).

If you aren’t in love with Janeway already, you will be... and perhaps with a few other women too. :)

Okay...I'm a basic run of the mill feminist...

but even I enjoy some eye candy once in awhile. What's better than eye candy...eye candy with strength and intelligence...and a bit of underlying vulnerability. Didn't you want to both protect 7 and be protected by her...didn't you want to do the same with Janeway...maybe just a little bit... Sometimes I kind of saw them as two sides of the same coin. Having similiar amounts of strengths and weaknesses...complementing each other's. No wonder it felt so lesbianish...  And secretly erotic...but that could have been the cat suit, the uniform and the hardware too...hehehe

    Mary Ryan Fenelli

Before there was Janeway, before there was Mrs. Colombo, there was Mary Ryan Fenelli. Ah, the days of skipping class to watch the saga of and the endless bickering between Mary and Delia Reid.

A ghra mo chroi.  Kate Mulgrew will always be Mary Fenelli to me.

In all this time, I've never figured it out; whether it is the voice, the smirk, the eyes or the bawdy sense of humor.  Whatever it is, it still works.

Never have I been a blue calm sea.  I have always been a storm...SLN

    Ryan's Hope

I first admired Kate Mulgrew in the soap opera "Ryan's Hope" too!  She definitely caught this questioning teen's attention back in the day. For me, it was that she just exuded self confidence, and she was teh hawt (and still is).
    ~H~'s picture

    Yes...

I remember "Ryan's Hope" too (even if it seemed to be on a lifetime ago). In all of her roles (and in real life), she appears beautiful...intelligent...and confident.
    Who could ask for more?

Ah...but she's married to one of the local politicians in my hometown region (Tim Hagan).

Losing lesbian street cred every second of the day @ attictales.com

I found G.L. Dartt's fanfic about 6 or 7 years ago.  She's an exceptional writer.  The stories are well written, the characters stay true to form and the sex scenes...well...oh my oh my...And I'm not just saying all this because we're both from the Maritimes.:)

    Fanfic

I just visited the G.L. Dartt fanfic site and read through some of the incredible stories and you're right. Some sections are quite erotic.

    Wow!

I loved ST:Voyager because of Jeri/Sevenof9 and Not Janeway!

This might be a sacrilege, but I got bored with ST: V after the second season. Janeway’s inflexible by-the-rule character annoyed me, along with Chakotay and Tom Paris.  To be honest, there wasn’t enough eye candy and enough adventure to keep my interested. I was only watching the third season of ST:V until I saw Jeri Ryan in the summer previews for season 4 in that silver cat suit hers!  YOWZA!! I had one of the most intense episodes of lust when I saw her and to me she was my lesbian wet dream come true!!!  The power, the passion, the danger, and let’s not forget those huge blue eyes, long legs, and HUGE T*TS that encompassed all that was Seven of Nine!  And just so you don't think I'm totally superficial - a pretty face will only capture my attention momentarily -- it was Jeri Ryan's brilliant and spot on performance as a super intelligent, dry witted yet vulnerable young woman, who was also incredibly gorgeous and sexy, that kept me coming back for more. I wasn't into the character of "Janeway" until I started reading Gina Dartt's J7 (Janeway/Seven) lesbian fan fiction stories, which are absolute masterpieces. Janeway only became ‘cool’ to me after Gina, never before.  Jeri is still one of my favorite gals, even if she is a Republican …

I think there were a lot of

I think there were a lot of doubt especially from the female fans of the show, when it came to Seven of Nine back when she was introduced to the show. But it turns out Jeri Ryan is one of the best if not THE best actress on the show. She might be boobs and ass but more than anything, I thought her coming to the show took the acting on the show up a notch whereas the actress who played Kes wasn't all that strong in her performance.

The scenes between Seven and Janeway... well, Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan acted their behinds off and I thought that Ryan got a lot more out of the crew than anyone else. She's a really good actress and considering some of the dialogue she had to spew, she did an amazing and very convincing job.

The two parter episode Dark Frontier had some amazing acting and should definitely be watched by anyone interested to see Mulgrew and Ryan duke it out. In fact check out the whole 4th and 5th season, they were amazing :D

    Eye Candy AND Brain Candy

Seriously, that's like having your cake and eating it to. I'm a total trekkie. I watched the original in re-runs and when TNG started I was skeptical...and I was only 10! LOL

I totally dug Voyager because finally having a woman captain was a dream come true. Plus I had just come out a year before at 17, so I was looking at it through my brand new "it's okay to drool over women" eyes.

I was delighted by 7 of 9. It never occurred to me that she was JUST eye candy. If she had no brain and used her sexuality to get everything she wanted, and was all "I need a man to save me", then she'd just be eye candy.

    Voyager

This is one of my all time favourite shows. It really saddened me when it took a big hairy nose-dive it's 7th season. C'mon, Seven and Chakotay??

    Stupid.

Otherwise, the subtext between Janeway and Seven was mouth watering and more then a little addictive. I was hooked hard come season 4.

    ummm

...umm don't really have anything to add - just an excuse to display my avatar and say that there was an emotional depth to the relationship between 7 and Janeway which I kept expecting to spill over into something a bit more, ...well - more.

    Heartbeat

Speaking of Kate Mulgrew, did anyone ever watch the late 80s show, Heartbeat? It was about a women's medical clinic in Los Angeles. Although it was an ensemble show, Kate Mulgrew was essentially the lead.

What was striking about that the show was that, of the four main characters (the founders of the clinic), one (Gail Strickland) was a lesbian. And she even had a girlfriend (Gina Hecht). I remember being quite disappointed by how dispassionate the lesbian relationship was, but I was thrilled that the characters existed.

I loved Heartbeat!!! I was a wee gay when it was on, but I remember thinking there was something special about that show...and Kate...

    Heartbeat

I remember this series, too.   The series creator, Sara Davidson, was the writer for a mini-series (Loose Change) that I loved and I followed her to this production.  It was very much a case of blink and you'll miss it, though.

It predated most of the ensemble medical series and was perhaps a bit too much before its time.  Mulgrew and Lynn Whitfield were definitely the best part of it.

If I recall correctly, the lesbian storyline was very much a case of "in name only," but in all fairness,  it never really got a chance to get its feet under it either.

    The lesbian story line

was certainly less developed than any other romance in the show. The primary lesbian-related plotline was the complicated relationship between Marilyn and her young adult daughter who felt replaced by Marilyn's gf. This show was on when I was just coming out. I was simultaneously thrilled by the existence of the lesbian relationship and frustrated by how circumspect it was.

Somewhere, I believe I have some old videos of the show. (I used to tape everything gay on tv. :-)) I'm going to have to do a little excavating.

ST: VOY came on when I was in fifth grade and I instantly became HOOKED on the show and was obsessed with her female captain. At the time, I thought it was because Janeway was a strong confident woman and a good role model for adolescent little me. Now I know it was probably more than that.....

Auburn hair, husky voice. That is so totally my type!

    Wow

I loved Voyager, now years after fanatically waiting on the latest vhs tapes to be released (yes, vhs lol.. my gf at the time used to love making fun of the shelves full of voyager tapes) I've fallen back in love with it again. G.L. Darrt's stories are fantastic, ty so much for that link scribegrrrl!

Its like a dream come true, a love story involving 2 of my favorite characters from the show, and its a LOVE story, not some porn for the sake of porn or melodramatic garbage where they brood entire 'episodes' before realising they love each other *cough* loving annabelle *cough* imagine me and you *cough*

Only up to the 4th story despite reading the entire afternoon away.. hoping desperately the style dosen't change, I was in tears when Kathryn finally got Seven back to her quarters after spending 3 months thinking she was dead O_o Just the thought of the captain being so vulnerable.. Then again I also cried when Tara got shot and put up with a month of being laughed at by my partner...

Seriously thinking of calling in sick to work tomorrow.. must keep reading.. there has to be a wedding somewhere in one of these stories and I'm not skipping any to find out. :D

    OMG

I can't believe I only found that particular thread NOW.

As my name on this site can show, I am a hardcore ST: V and Janeway fan.

And a trekkie too. I agree that they fucked up the end of the show, but who cares, it was seven years of watching Janeway go through Hell and back, and oh God, Kate Mulgrew is AWESOME. I think she is one of those Hollywood actresses who are wholly underestimated! She is so good!

I hated Seven too, before, especially because she was stealing screen time away from Janeway, but after a while I warmed up to the idea, I even had the greatest pleasure of doing an academic presentation at the annual conference of the American Pop Culture Association that was partly based on the mentorship between Janeway and Seven, and the way Janeway uses Da Vinci to introduce Seven to her "humanity"! That shows you how I am truly deeply, madly in love with this TV show.

Anyways, I agree...Seven and Chakotay? Come on! And Janeway would never have done what she did in Endgame to bring her ship back--it means genocide every way you put it, and Janeway would never have compromised herself that way--neither would have annoying do-gooder Chakotay for that instance, or B'elanna or Tome Paris! This episode only shows how eager they were to conclude the show...

And to all of those extreme Trekkies who are out there: go to Hell. ST: V was one of the best Star Trek. It had humor, moral questions and all, and after all, as Isaac Asimov put it, what is Sci-fi if only a reflect of our moral interrogations on life?
