"In Treatment": Our time is almost up

Have you been watching In Treatment? HBO's half-hour drama, which captures both the inner and outer lives of a therapist (Gabriel Byrne) and his patients, doesn't have a huge audience. That's probably because some viewers think five nights a week is way too much of a time commitment, and probably also because some people just don't like therapy — or maybe they get enough of it in real life, which is certainly understandable.

But I'm completely addicted to In Treatment and will be sad to see it end this week. Here's a look back at the first season, including the lessons I've learned from each patient's sessions. (Each night, the show focuses on a different patient.)

[Warning: Slight spoilers]

Monday: Laura

As the linster noted back when the series first started, Laura (Melissa George, aka Lauren on Alias) is Jenny Schecter–esque and hard to like. (And she resembles Jenny in appearance as well as behavior — actually, I think Melissa George looks like a cross between Jenny and our own illustrious Sarah Warn. Here's another pic that shows the resemblance more clearly.)

Anyway, Laura is (or thinks she is) in love with Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne), and he's very fond of her, too. But she seems to be less and less attracted to him, the more he returns her affections. I hope he comes to his senses and realizes she's not half the woman his wife is.

Take-home therapy: Selfish, oversexed women are to be avoided.

Tuesday: Alex

Blair Underwood has been terrific on the show. His character, a Navy fighter pilot, struggles with questions of duty and morality, as well as with notions of "manhood" and his own not-quite-straight sexuality. It's difficult to take your eyes off Alex when he's on the couch, and his story line took a shocking, completely unexpected turn last week.

Take-home therapy: Be yourself at all costs.

Wednesday: Sophie

Even if you have no interest in the rest of In Treatment, do yourself the favor of watching a few of Sophie's episodes. I don't know where Mia Wasikowska has been hiding, but she is divinely, overwhelmingly gifted. I know everyone's been comparing Ellen Page to Jodie Foster, so I think I'll compare Mia Wasikowska to Meryl Streep. Yes, she's that good.

And Sophie's story is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It even brings out the best in her therapist, which makes for some remarkably therapeutic TV. I often feel exhausted afterward — in a good way.

Take-home therapy: You deserve to be happy, even if some people in your life have done their best to make you think the opposite is true.

Thursday: Jake and Amy

This mismatched couple is frustrating and, if you ask me, completely doomed. Embeth Davidtz is good in the role, but her character is so messed up, it's hard to sympathize with her. I think she has smiled about three times all season, and never with her eyes.

Take-home therapy: Emotional frigidity is much worse than physical coldness.

Friday: Paul and Gina

On Fridays, Paul sees his own therapist, Gina (Dianne Wiest). And that's when the dramatic fireworks really begin. Byrne and Wiest offer a weekly master class, and often move me to tears. I've always liked Wiest, but I didn't know she was this phenomenal.

Take-home therapy: Hold out hope that in your next life, you'll be as awesome as Dianne Wiest.

And then there's Paul's family, including his lovely wife, Kate (Michelle Forbes).

It's been fascinating to see how Paul deals with family issues that echo his patients' struggles. He seems to recognize them as similar — sometimes even identical — problems, and yet he is also bewildered and stymied by them.

Paul's daughter Rosie is played by Mae Whitman. For weeks, I've been trying to figure out why she looks familiar.

That's right: She was Ann on Arrested Development. She's totally different on In Treatment, though you still might feel like saying, "Really? Her?"

If you weren't already drawn to the show, my praise for it probably won't mean much. I guess I tend to be a fan of therapy on TV. I couldn't stop watching Huff even when it repelled me. And I think TV can be a form of therapy in itself, or at least the good stuff can be. As Lisa Schwarzbaum puts it so eloquently in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly:

Newspaper headlines corroborate daily what we and the Doors have always known, that people are strange. We're erratic, contradictory, each of us an individual bundle of urges, compulsions, and rationalizations, dressed in shoes.

The last three episodes of In Treatment (yes, just three) air this week, starting Wednesday. I hope I don't go into withdrawal next week — I might need that real-life Gina sooner than I think.

Past episodes are available on HBO On Demand and on the HBO site. Don't miss your appointment!

    IT

I typically approach psych therapy with trepidation, but I glommed onto this show for some reason. Probably, initially, because of Michelle Forbes. But then I stayed, adn stayed. One of my kids also watches the show, and we end up discussing in much detail what Paul's doing and how everyone's (people in general, not just characters on the show) f-ed up in their own unique way. And yes, dressed up in shoes. Preferrably sensible shoes, or better yet boots.

And finally, yes, Dianne Wiest is phenomenal in this roll, as if she's finally been allowed to unleash everything. Just like how restrained her character was in 'Independence Day' (not the Will Smith movie, totally different movie from 1983) until she finally exploded, it's kind of like that, and more, with different explosiveness.

    Psych major loves it

I've watched every episode. When I heard it was 5 nights a week I was turned off by it, but its only 30mins and it doesnt have new characters all the time (which was my misconception).

At first I didnt like it, Laura was just super annoying, I could tell she was manipulative from the get go. Then I saw Alex, he is just addictive, so interesting and charming (most of the time lol). I mostly wanted to watch Sophie and Alex, then the couple got interesting and I didnt really like GIna because Paul was creating such a bias against her (plus I got the feeling she was judgemental because of the expressions on her face).

Cant wait for the second season. I hear it was originally an Indian show? It's really good, mentally stimulating and my parents always wanna discuss it with me.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

    WOW

The writing on this show is amazing not to mention a great inside look into the human psyche, with each patient you get a glimpse of how we relate to one another and try to cope in a world that is chaotic...while also seeing glimpses of what really happens behind those psychiatrist's doors....if you never been....also...each character bring a unique problem to the table....that will hopefully resonate with some if not all of the public......I say the best therapy in life...would be watching a week of this show just to get hooked into watching the rest of the season.

    Finally, an In Treatment blog!!

I really enjoy watching the subtle changes in the characters’ appearances from week to week (though watching the gray disappear and reappear in Byrne’s hair distracts at times). Little touches, such as watching Wiest arrange chairs and adjust tissue boxes before Bryne’s arrival humanizes her “sleepy spider” character. The way she cocks her head while listening to a story, the hand gestures, her muted emotions: wow, I’m hooked. I enjoy all the storylines, but Laura’s the least because, well everyone knows/knew someone as destructive (self and otherwise) as she. Great writing, great deliveries, great show, and damn! It’s almost over!

It's back to the usual crap, I guess. We always watch all the episodes at once on the Monday they are released. Does anyone have the patience to watch the series one night at a time?

    In Treatment

Gabriel ByrneGabriel ByrneGabriel ByrneI love In Treatment and like one of the previous commentor's I too watch all the episodes on Monday evening on HBO On Demand - who can wait?  MY MAIN QUESTION - IS THE SHOW COMING BACK FOR A SECOND SEASON?  How can we find out?  I am going to miss it as I miss Big Love but at least I think Big Love is coming back for season 3.

Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Weist are fabulous!  I could watch them 24/7 and never tire of it.  The rest of the cast are just wonderful too.  If you don't find one of their shoes fit your foot, you'll relate anyway.  "When I find myself in times of trouble. . .Dr. Weston come to me, whisper words of wisdom..."

Please someone let me know if the show will return (in 2009?) oh God, that's such a long wait.  I have put in a Google Alert for Gabriel Byrne (who I have loved since Little Women) just to be able to see some other work he does before In Treament returns.  I hope it's going to return.

    No news on renewal, yet.

    Elaine,

I can't find any mention of In Treatment being renewed, probably because viewership was declining, though they began posting free episodes for downloading and interest is climbing again.(Keep your fingers crossed.)

Have you seen the last three episodes, yet? Mia Wasikowska was phenomenal; she shouldn't be being compared to Foster, Page, or Streep (no offense, scribegrrrl) because she is an original. So powerful. Kudos to all the writers, actors, and producers here (Mark Wahlberg? Melanie Mayron? [hence the Peter Horton guest spot]), what a great ensemble.
