An "Idol" who's neither American nor undiscovered

Today on the Chicago Tribune blog The Watcher, TV critic Maureen Ryan exposes an American Idol contestant who has already made an album. Carly Smithson, highlighted on last night's episode of Idol, released a major-label album in 2001 under her maiden name, Carly Hennessy. She got through to the Hollywood round on Idol in 2005, but had visa issues (she's Irish) and had to leave the show.

Apparently her MCA-backed album failed to launch her career: It sold only 378 copies in its first week. So she's still trying to get that big break.

Is this a cover-up on the producers' part, or no big deal? Says Ryan,

True, the singing contest is inevitably going to feature people who have had professional careers and recording contracts. But there’s a difference between someone who’s been a backup singer or had a few self-released or indie albums and someone who’s had major backing from one of the biggest record labels in the world.

Isn’t this competition about discovering fresh new talents? Smithson was hardly undiscovered. Fine. Just tell people that.

I guess that's just it; it depends on what the competition is about and how you define fresh. Yeah, she made a record, but not many people heard it — it's like that tree falling in the forest. Only more tuneful. How "undiscovered" can you be, anyway, in the MySpace age?

If American Idol exists to give worthy talent a boost, maybe it shouldn't matter how elevated the singers already are when they audition. It's still a boost; just a less hefty one. But I agree with Ryan that the producers should "just tell people that" instead of pretending we're still in a guileless age of community talent shows.

Apparently there are a lot of contestants with professional backgrounds this year, so the producers should probably address the issue now rather than later. (Ryan suggests they're hoping it will really blow up, so they can reap the ratings benefits of another controversy.) They could even divide the contestants into two tiers — I'll bet viewers would still end up voting for the ones they like best. And experience is only one factor in likability (see Melinda Doolittle).

Here's that video Smithson made several years ago:

I didn't make it through the first minute of that (it is decidedly not my groove), but I wouldn't mind seeing whether she can sing other things. She can keep a tune and has a fairly decent voice. And that's what I really want to see on American Idol, especially after last year! Wait, speaking of last year, maybe Carly is too much like a Haley Scarnato. Ick.

I suppose this is more evidence that American Idol is totally fixed from day one. That's what my dad always said — but he also said, "Doesn't mean they can't sing. Just means there's no point."

    26 seconds

that's how far I managed to watch the video :D

    Me neither

I didn't make it through the first 35 seconds.  I see why she only sold 300 albums.  But American Idol really does need to specify, because those hometown backers won't like having to compete with a record label monster fan base!

    Wrong song

She has a decent voice.  The song, on the other hand, is all wrong.  My first impression was that she kind of sounds like Amy Grant.  I think with a better song, she might do alright.  The song just sucks.

    I hadn't even noticed the

I hadn't even noticed the time until I looked at the comments. And then I scrolled up and I, too, only made it to 26 seconds.

I don't know what to say about her voice. Didn't care for the song at all. I didn't see her audition on Idol.

    I win :D

I made it through the whole video!

Do i get a cookie? 'cause i totally deserve one after that..

Oh wait this was about Idol huh? I can only ever make it through the audition stages of idol before I lose interest.

    Not fair

I recall that name too. That's not fair. It doesn't matter if she sold only 300 albums not her fault that's the record company's fault. She is considered a professional since she had taste of rise and fall in the music industry. Lot of these contestants never had a nibble of oppurtunity of the music biz. If she weren't meant to go through the first time; it probably meant she shouldn't gone through the second time.  We'll see why she went through maybe she got better signing skillz.

Look at Chris Daughtry, his band is one of my favs. One of my friends pointed out he was on Rockstar , rock version of AI, but didn't make it and so he audition for AI and made it the top 5.  He was never offered a record deal until he blew up on AI. Now he's got his own band and has sold over a million copies of his albums and is doing quite well.

This chick, man, it's like given her an extra boost when she really doesn't need it. I tell you, the more I sense fixed shows like AI, the more I will keep saying all reality shows aren't reality-they're  fixed  I mean scripted.

No offense. Carly's cute and got a voice but she'll give the other contestants a run for her money. This season of  AI will be interesting.

    Speaking of Chris Daughtry

Any time people say AI is fixed I point out Chris Daughtry. If AI is fixed he would've won it that year. I don't think the voting is fixed, but the talent they put through in the first rounds is questionable. Hopefully they will get rid of her since she's already been offered a contract, just like they did with the one guy who got into the top group and was discovered to be too old.

    Re: AI being fixed

I totally agree with that.  They (the judges and the Nigel) hated Taylor Hicks and loved Chris Daughtry, Kat McPhee and Elliot Yamin yet he still won.

And regarding the people who aren't so undiscovered, I don't care either way.  As long as they can sing, then I'm fine.

    Um

Whoever cooked up the 'concept' for that video should be pool noodle whipped - and not in a fun way! I can't believe that I watched those four seconds. Wind machines?

    hehehe

Your comment made me want to watch the video...for a laugh.  And I got it!  Thanks.  :)

It was like watching a SNL skit making fun of music videos...it was so cliche.

    Funny because....

The minute I heard this song I knew who she was..it was over-played on the radios here in Ireland.  Also didn't Kelly Clackson cover one of her songs on one of her albums? The fact that she was not born in America shouldn't matter either, the real problem is that she already had a record deal.
