I want Marlee Matlin to run for president

I've been a Marlee Matlin fan since Children of a Lesser God. She's great in just about everything she does. Her turn on Picket Fences was memorable and gay-friendly; she stole the show every time she strolled into The West Wing; and even if you want Bette and Tina to get back together on The L Word, you can't deny that Jodi has made things interesting. Plus, I just think she's hot.

A reader (thanks, tuckatangent) sent me a link to a fascinating Matlin-related drama. It seems Mo Rocca, media personality extraordinaire, recently said a pretty stupid thing on his blog. Here's the offending "joke," posted last week:

Mo Wants To Know: Why Was Marlee Matlin At American Idol Last Night?
I mean no disrespect to the Oscar-winning deaf actress. She can go anywhere she damn pleases.

But, the thing is ... she's deaf.

Uh, Mo? The thing is, you're an idiot. But at least you know it now. Rocca was immediately taken to task by Matlin's interpreter, Jack Jason, who explained (no doubt while cursing and gnashing his teeth) that deaf people are more than capable of enjoying American Idol and music generally. Rocca took it to heart, and he also took the opportunity to beg for a personal reply from Marlee. He got it, and it was brilliant. Here's the heart of Marlee's comment (for best results, read the whole thing!):

At the end of the day it's not the humor or the jokes that bother me, it's the real stuff like discrimination, lack of understanding, and inequality that ticks me off. Even more annoying are people who actually take the humor and use it to reinforce their prejudices. It's true some of your readers might have been sensitive to your comments but that's because they've been on the receiving end of ignorance — big time. So maybe that means we should choose our words carefully. At the same time, I think free speech and common sense are important too. So, you won't see me going Al Sharpton on you if you want to make a joke about me or my deafness. I'd just hope that people would just consider what they say and what they label as "humor" in this YouTube, Instant Message world where things get replayed over and over again until we're desensitized. And I'm referring to both pro and con arguments. Let's just lower the volume, I say. (Pun intended).

"Let's just lower the volume" is officially my new motto. I can't think of a better way to balance free speech with basic awareness and decency. Marlee, will you please run for president now? If not president of the whole country, then president of something. Hey, Hillary still needs a running mate. OK, maybe not.

Matlin ended her comment on Rocca's blog with a nod to my favorite art school dean:

... if you want to fawn at my feet and worship my Oscar, you're welcome to come on up to Vancouver. I'm having a great time being Jennifer Beals' main squeeze on "The L Word" but I'll make time for you. We'll have some milk and cookies.

You'd be crazy not to take her up on that offer, Mo. Four-eyed types should stick together.

    wow.

That reply was effing brilliant. I'm not of the Bette and Tina forever camp so this extra blog on Matlin is awesome. In my book she just got 10 more hot points.

    Impressive and admirable

I already loved the Bette and Jodi chemistry and now, I have even more reason to be awestruck with Marlee Matlin and how she handles such volatile situations. Where can I find a girl like that... confident, smart, worldly, beautiful, and just downright impressive.

p.s. Her picture with Jennifer Beals with their eyeglasses is HILARIOUS! I could NOT stop laughing. Thank you for that. ^_^

I have to admit, a smile

I have to admit, a smile came across my face when I saw her at American Idol. I thought it was really cool that she would go, and she could judge based on every other aspect of the singers other then their voices (because frankly, the weren't that great). I knew people would wonder why she was there. I'm blown away by her response, and I agree, she should run for Queen of, or President of SOMETHING. She needs to be calling more shots, because she's brilliant and wonderful. SWOON.

    Hee!

There was another pundit who made onscreen mention of Matlin's appearance at the Idol finale, but it was a much more subtle nudge, at least I thought anyway. It may have been The Soup.

They were focusing on the the celebs in the audience and came to Matlin, attentively enjoying and applauding, and quipped:

Also in attendance, Marlee Matlin.  She watches Idol the same way I do at home.

I admit it, I laughed, but mostly because I really do watch AI with the sound off.

Nevertheless, as someone who was always labeled "the deaf kid" and endured the horror of promptly being moved to the front of every classroom, I totally <3 what Matlin had to say and relish knowing that she truly is a class act.

    i love marlee

I'm deaf and i agree with her everything she said with class. It shows that she can be funny too. that's why i love her. well, hillary clinton and i share same birthday and i thought it's funny for her to be running mate for hillary. lol. i agree with her about ignorance. most deaf people prefer to be called "deaf" or "Deaf", NOT NOT "deaf and mute" or "deaf and dumb" that last 2 phases offends people and I hate when the writers for magazine or newspaper or film uses that last 2 phases. deaf people can drive, go school at university with hearning people or deaf people, get phd degree, become lawyer or doctor. I don't like to see deaf as invisible or not existence and that's why i hope in future movies that deaf people can act or make movies like marlee and other deaf actors/actresses out there. i can go on but i better stop here. i admit i want to see marlee win other oscar in future cuz she's a cool lady.

    okay.

i have to admit that my first reaction when i saw marlee matlin sitting there at the american idos finale was "woah! is that marlee matlin? but... she's deaf!"

obviously i know that deaf people can still appreciate music. and marlee's response to mo rocca was great.

    but COME ON!

i do love marlee matlin, particularly with bette (booo tina!) and particularly when she wears strange jumpsuits of sorts.

    She's amazing!

That woman is so very awesome! She needs to be Queen of the world! She's witty, smart, funny, classy and so beautiful. Today's "IT" girls should learn from her.

Goofy pic of Marlee and Jennifer!

Where did you get that goofy pic??? Hilarious!

I also think Marlee is awesome, and I love her fashion style in the first pic.

    Hats Off!!!

I'm a die-hard Ti-Bette fan, but all that aside, that response has certainly evoked a true sense of admiration for Matlin - very level-headed, smart, tactful, intelligent and mature way to handle this.  It speaks volumes of her character.  I only know her from the L Word.  I've seen her in other works but never realy paid attention till then.

    Hats off to her!!

    Teejay's picture

    Excellent response

I admired Matlin in The West Wing (although I never found her hot - Alison Janney & Stockard Channing were much more to my taste). However her response to this clot  proves that she is a mature, intelligent, articulate woman. However, it does not make me any fonder of Jodie who imho is none of these things. Perhaps Matlin could be employed as a writer on the L Word? Then we wouldn't have the writers giving Bette dialogue that completely echoes what Mo Rocca came out with. (I refer to the scene in the Planet when Bette told Tina that Jodie had not come to Kit's gig because she was deaf).
    Anasazi's picture

Thanks for bringing that up, Teejay!

"I refer to the scene in the Planet when Bette told Tina that Jodie had not come to Kit's gig because she was deaf". Although we do not see eye to eye in terms of the character of Jodi (whom I find very intelligent, articulate, mature and emotional), we definitely thought the same thing about that scene: Bette Porter behaved like an asshole. That scene at the planet immediately came to my mind when I read the Mo Rocca blog. But unlike Mr. Rocca, Bette didn't show any growth as a person that would indicate that she acknowledged that what she had said was just wrong. Argh, I get worked up just thinking about it.

MM in '08 (either Marlee OR Modest Mouse)

Marlee’s hot and has a great sense of humor.  I’m glad she mentioned My Name is Earl, where the thoroughly un-PC and ridiculously funny Joy mocked her to no end.  And yes, it was hilarious.

For being hot and being able to laugh at herself, Marlee gets my vote for... anything.

    That photo is so cool!

    Thanks for posting it.

I looks like it was taken back in the 80's. Check out the poofy hair.

    To be honest...

It didn't even occur to me that there was anything strange about Marlee Matlin at American Idol. That might make me incredibly obtuse, but consider this: Everyone relies on their different external senses to different degrees.

For instance, I may not be able to see the big E on the eye chart without my glasses, but I can see that Marlee can listen just fine. (I find my mind's eye to be more reliable than my vision. I miss a lot of details, but the big picture is clearer.)

    My kind of girl

Definetely, Ms Matlin deserves all the respect and admiration. She proved that being a music lover doesn't end with being a deaf..She can do whatever she likes. She's a strong, intelligent, unique woman and hot too.

    Marlee

Before I was hearing impaired Marlee was something of a hero to me.  Now that I have a better knowledge of what it's like to lose even part of your ability to hear, what she's done is incredible.  I've always had something of a crush on her.  She's never been afraid to speak up, and to my knowledge has never publicly made an ass of herself.  Props to her for being a lady about it and not sinking low or playing the victim.

By the way, where did you find that pic of her and Jen Beals?  That's soooo old school!

    Amazing woman!

At the tender age of 16, my first job ever was at a movie theater. It was a small establish, nothing to write home to Mom about, and it catered more to the indie crowd. I loved working there and since we were so small I was blessed to meet many wonderful people. One woman came in with her husband almost every other week and she was blind. I never gave it a second though.

Disabilities only hinder you if you let them. Heroes like Marlee, Andrea Bocelli, Christopher Reeves, and the great Stephen Hawking are living proof of that.
