Hidden Palms: a summertime hidden gem?

During the past couple of weeks, we've had our sights set on the fall TV season. There's just one problem with that (well, other than the complete lack of lesbians on network TV): It's not even June. What, for the love of all that is not National Bingo Night, are we supposed to watch for the next three months? This week we'll try to give you some options for summer viewing.

I may hate myself for it in the morning, but I'll probably give Hidden Palms a try. It starts May 30 on the CW and is brought to us by Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson's Creek), which means it will either be pretty great or pretty awful. The photos of blonde beauties on the website would seem to tip the scales toward awful, but the characters' stories seem to be a little darker than their tresses. (Actually, the word "dark" seems to show up in every description of this show, which is a good sign.)

Johnny (Taylor Handley of The O.C.) is fresh out of rehab, while Greta (Amber Heard) is pretty much raising herself. And then there's Liza (Ellary Porterfield), a "gifted but awkward high school student who conducts explosive science experiments in her garage."

And Veronica Mars fans will be happy to see Tessa Thompson as Nikki, another rehab survivor.

Throw in Leslie Jordan (Beverly Leslie on Will and Grace) as a drag queen, and I'm intrigued.

Oh, and joining Williamson as an executive producer on Hidden Palms is Scott Winant, who just happened to be involved in a little show called My So-Called Life. I'm a fool to get my hopes up even a little bit, aren't I?

    Grrrr

I really don't want to give any new CW shows a chance.  I'm still grieving apparently.  Is bitter one of the phases?  It should be.  I fear I might cave out of lack of viable options.  I think my DVD player will get a lot of play this summer.  The last 6 episodes of Studio will be bittersweet, but at least I have those to look forward to viewing.

I am right there with you. We need to make support group.

    Totally Bitter

My offical stance is other than the finale on tuesday (wouldn't it be great if it got a huge number.... I still believe, it's not completely dead yet, the show could pull a meredith) I will not watch any CW show, and if by chance i feel an irkling to, it will not be through tv watching

btw, doesn't Tessa Thompson totally look like Sharon Leal there.  Well at least how I remember her from my beloved Boston Public (Seasons 1 & 2 only)

    Agreed

Manda - that's exatly who I thought it was, to the point that I wondered if the wrong picture had been posted along with the blog! I love Leal! Whatever happened to Boston Public, anyway?

Another great past-time when there's nothing to watch on television is to reminisce about the days of old. You know, the good story lines on ER, Boston Public, Third Watch, Laverne & Shirley. You know what I mean!

    yikes

From the looks of it, that Ben Lee song might just be the high point of the whole show. and why does that Asian actress play the same character in everything she's in?

    Cookie

Don't forget, "The Closer" starts back up on TNT June 18th. And in July we'll also get Holly Hunter in "Saving Grace". I don't know anything about the latter show, but the former is one of the best dramas on tv. Kyra Sedgwick is so wonderful that if I ever ran into her on the street I'd give her a cookie.

We also have a hotter than usual season of Degrassi

I am personally glad to NOT have so many things to watch on TV for the next few months! Nevertheless, I'll be tuned into Degrassi...watched some very intriguing episode clips on YouTube...courtesy of a link from here that led to another clip that led to another clip...and so on...and so forth...

On another note, very bummed out about Veronica Mars not being renewed. Do they think without the Gilmore Girls to lead in there won't be an audience??? Almost no reason to tune into the CW and by the way the viewer they use on their website for missed episodes SUCKS! (Kind of anti-CW right now...)

    What about another option?

Maybe I've been in Europe too long, but I think that when there is nothing on TV, the best option is to get together with friends and just have a nice conversation or even a game or two of whatever your favorite game is! Since here TV is not that great, I have detached myself from TV... And c'mon, there are many people here that might be living in the same city! What about promoting some AfterEllen get together? Go to a cafe, meet, make new "real friends"... or am I too off on this one???

    Nice thought

I very much enjoy a game of cards with my friends, however entertainment junkie is a part of my DNA.  I am quite sure of it.

Have they made a Whedonesque Scene It, yet?
