Happy Memorial Day!

Your intrepid AfterEllen.com bloggers will be otherwise occupied on Monday, May 28, celebrating Memorial Day in one way or another. You know: Barbecuing, soaking up the sun and counting votes for the list of hotties (grumble). We'll be back Tuesday, with all the pop culture news that's fit to print (or, rather, that small subset that strikes our fancy).

If you find yourself at a loss this weekend, here are some ways to while away the three days:

1. Call Sarah Silverman at 1-877-SARAH07. Just don't dial it wrong.
2. Make some Dharma labels for your picnic foodstuffs.
3. Try to track down a copy of the Peanuts Memorial Day special, What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown? (Does anyone remember this?!)
4. Do a Memorial Day word search or logic puzzle.

And in honor of all that is patriotic, here's a game that's guaranteed to waste several hours and brain cells: Name the 50 states in 10 minutes. Good luck: It's harder than it sounds.

I missed 12. Talk about brain freeze. In my defense my sister kept talking to me. :) I suggest warning people not to talk to you because the clock starts as soon as you click.

And I got interrupted 3 times by the phone!! So, it is better to be "incommunicado" to play!
The first time I played this game was a 6 minutes thing, not 10, and it was after they did it on a "Friends" Episode, around Thanksgiving, and Ross misses also 1 State. Joey got 55 States! LOL! Today I had to play by myself, because my girlfriend insisted that being German was a disadvantage!

The last state--Indiana--took about a minute and a half. And it took me about three tries to get Massachusetts spelled correctly.

It probably helped that took two long road trips last year and drove through about 20 states.

That map game you recommended is fantastic. It doesn't get much easier each time you play, because they give you the states in a different order each time. Sometimes I place 49 out of 51 (including DC) perfectly, and sometimes it's a lot less. I've always loved a challenge like this.

I placed 44 States perfectly! And m y average error was 44 miles... I guess is not that bad! The only thing that bothers me is that Alaska and Hawaii are NOT in the real place! But at least one can see the form of them.

I love this game. I feel less smart than a 5th grader though. :) If you have a laptop I highly recommend connecting a mouse. I have a hand cramp now.

I have a vhs copy of "What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown?". If you're a Linus fan like myself, this is a must have. I tear up everytime I hear him recite the poem "In Flanders Fields".

I remember doing it when I saw it on The Planet Cast Forums and I think I got 45-ish. I know I missed Texas and Massachusetts the first time. How, I have no clue. I shall do it again since I'm bored out of my mind right now.

I can't believe I forgot Nebraska!! I had 48 states in 3 minutes and hit a wall. I got Minnesota and went catatonic for the last six minutes. I just kept singing Oklahoma in my mind over and over again. When they finally said I forgot Nebraska, part of my mind rebelled and refused to accept it as a state. Good job to those who got them all. I feel like I let my third grade teacher down...

Did anyone else learn the states song in elementary school? You know, "Fifty nifty united states from thirteen original colonies..." and then it proceeds to list them all in alphabetical order? It's been 11 years, but I still remember most of it. I always forget the Os, however. I did manage to remember them after a few minutes for the game.

25 ... and I couldn't for the love of my life remember Alaska. But songs helped me along as well with the trickier states (like Home sweet home Alabama or Oh, Carolina). Should brush up on my American geography though (I'm German ^^)

Wehell, what's this memorial day about anyway? Is it the same as pentecost which is celebrated in Europe?

If you're from Germany and can name that many states...well...
let me just say that there are a number of US citizens who would not be able to name that many states. ;-)

You did GREAT!
(When I played this game...I was thinking that it wasn't fair to those living in other parts of the world.)

Oh...and Memorial Day is a day to commemorate those who have died in military service. It is a day of rememberance. People often visit cemeteries and decorate the graves of soldiers on Memorial Day. It's a time for people in the U.S. to say "thank you!" to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

I live in Omaha, and I used to work there, and I'll tell you, man we'd have taste testing and all that.. mm mm good. And I think they actually do deliver there. If I can remember, we've delivered overseas. Who knows, it was a year ago, I could be wrong..
