Golden Globes: at least they didn't run long

The writers' strike certainly made an impact on the Golden Globe Awards this year. No glitz, no glamour, no stars, no oops-Christine-Lahti-is-in-the-bathroom moments. Shots of the red carpet were replaced by shots of those red-and-black WGA picket signs. But, as cohost (and pinhead) Billy Bush noted, the winners still deserved recognition, so some sort of show had to go on. Here are some highlights of last night's Golden Globes Winners Special on NBC. (Images are from the press conference rather than the broadcast, but you get the idea.)

MOVIES

Best Actress, Comedy or Musical: Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose

Best Actress, Drama: Julie Christie, Away From Her
Best Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There

Best Actor, Comedy or Musical: Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Best Actor, Drama: Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Best Picture, Comedy or Musical: Sweeney Todd
Best Picture, Drama: Atonement
Best Director: Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

TELEVISION

Best Actress, Drama: Glenn Close, Damages
Best Actress, Comedy: Tina Fey, 30 Rock

Best Supporting Actress: Samantha Morton, Longford
Best Actress, Miniseries or TV movie: Queen Latifah, Life Support

Best Actor, Drama: Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Best Actor, Comedy: David Duchovny, Californication
Best Supporting Actor: Jeremy Piven, Entourage
Best Comedy: Extras (HBO)
Best Drama: Mad Men

And now, my awards:

Stupidest comment of the awards special: Cohost Billy Bush, who thought it was strange for Cate Blanchett to win for I'm Not There — "because at the end of the day, it's a woman imitating a man." Well, it's a lot more believable than Billy Bush imitating someone who knows something about TV and film.

Most painfully missed opportunity to see a hot actress make a clever, heartfelt speech: Glenn Close's win for Damages

Biggest "what's that?" moment: Samantha Morton's win for Longford — not just because few people have heard of Longford, but because she looked nothing like herself (and sort of like Dark Willow)

Biggest "he was robbed!" moment: Alec Baldwin's loss to David Duchovny for Best Actor in a TV Comedy

Biggest "they were robbed!" moment: 30 Rock losing to Extras for Best TV Comedy

Best fond memories of a movie: Every mention of Juno

Overall, the Winners Special was like an extended episode of Access Hollywood. Which is OK, unless you were hoping to see something else, like ... hmm, I dunno ... an awards show. The victories felt a little hollow, didn't they? On the other hand, they also felt a lot more concise. That's three hours of my life I got back!

    Sorry but Best Actress,

Sorry but Best Actress, Comedy or Musical should had went to helen bonham carter she was like four to six months pregnant filming that movie.

Oh and best award show ever! non of that blah blah blah crud. lol

Oh and EXTRAS winning was just BULLSH*T!!!!!!!! Fist the show is called Extras but in the last season the two "extras" where not extras one had his own TV show and the girl was a waitress or something. Really any show should had bet out Extras that was bullsh*t.

    Yay

I'm so excited that Marion Cotillard won!  I always thought she deserved the win, but I didn't think they'd actually give it to her.  Also, yay for "Extras" (one of the best shows ever), Cate Blanchette, and Julie Christie.

I've never been a fan of

I've never been a fan of David Duchovny's work, but Californication is my exception. He deserved that win.

And Billy Bush has never proven to be anything more than a dipshit.

    Golden Globes

The thing I missed the most about the lack of a Golden Globes "awards" show was what most people (I think) tune in for... to see who is wearing what and who everyone came with.  I also enjoy the shots around the event to show who is sitting at which table with what other celebrities.

The thing I did not miss was the often long winded boring speeches and the awkwardness of the host to keep the show moving along and the often terrible job of the presenters to simply present without the awful attempts at humor.

There are certainly some winners who I would have loved to have seen up on stage accepting their awards and hearing what they had to say (it's rare, but there are truly some "golden" moments that have happened over the years).

All in all a lot could be learned from this year - it was one of the few times an awards show didn't run overtime, didn't bore me to tears and cause me to fast forward through 75% of it, and didn't have some awful unnecessary musical number.  It was fast and did the job that it was supposed to do... announce the nominees and then announce the winner, period!

Frankly, I'm uncertain why writers are needed for awards shows at all... show us the red carpet and who everyone is with, then get one or more people to announce the nominees for each category (one at a time), announce the winner, let the winner speak,  and end the show.  Then let us see coverage of the after-parties, whether the same night or seeing it the next night and I for one would be good to go!

    It wasn't lack of writers

It wasn't lack of writers that cut it short, it was the actors refusing to cross the picketline to attend.

    little boxes

Award ceremonies aren't that big (I think) over here in the UK anyway...

I don't think I know anyone who watches any of them, sure we see the results but that about the extent of our relationship with the awards. Whats more sorry than the awards not going ahead is that whats being done about the writers strike?? So the celebs don't have a party and a slap on the back? Big deal. Its time to sort out why they even have the awards!!!

the results wern't surprising to me, the only thing I would have changed, is a win for Weeds and Mary Louise Parker; they are the funniest thing i've seen on tv and so she's my personal winner.

    I whole heartedly agree

I whole heartedly agree with you. Awards show have become fashion shows these days and it's pointless. I wish peole were more passionate about the work the actors do rather than what  they're wearing. On that note I'm glad the actors didn't want to cross the picket lines and I support the writers. Hopefully they can make a decent living if any negotiations go through. Also I wish Mary-Louise Parker won but she won a while ago. Yes she should have gotten it but I have a feeling she's content and being that she seems very professional I think she just loves her job. I wish more people had jobs they loved. Lastly I don't care for Extras and I likely never will. I think Alec Baldwin is intelligent and great in his role. But I have a feeling he doesn't mind that he didn't win either. Also I was a TA last semester and I had to read people's work. Dozens of the students said that Cate Blachett was amazing. If I had the time I would have seen it.

    winners!

I'm so glad Marion Cotillard and Cate Blanchett won!!! (even if i think marion cotillard should have been in the category drama...).... too bad it was not on television, because the golden globes are usually a big thing, and it's very rare for a foreign (non english native speaker in a non english movie) actor/actress to win... it's a big recognition that didn't really happen since it was not broadcasted... but well, i understand the strike.

    I agree

I totally agree with you about Marion Cotillard. She was amazing as Edith Piaf. I think she will be nominated for an academy award and I hope she wins. Though Julie Christie was very good in Away from Her.
    deathbyblonde's picture

    I know!

The one year someone I was really pulling for won a major award, I didn't get to see her win it!  Damn.  I still love Marion Cotillard forever.

Who is this Marion Cotillard? I checked IMDB and the only thing I think I may had seen her in was that one Highlander episode. lol

    Word

That girl was a force of nature.  I mean, Helena Bonham Carter is awesome and I loved her in Sweeny Todd, but there was no contest between her and Marion.  Her Edith Piaf was probably the best thing I saw all year.

"Cohost Billy Bush, who thought it was strange for Cate Blanchett to win for I'm Not There — 'because at the end of the day, it's a woman imitating a man.'"

Right...and I suppose Linda Hunt didn't deserve that Oscar for The Year of Living Dangerously, either. Male impersonation aside, isn't all acting imitating something or someone? Otherwise, it's...you know...a documentary.

    rawr :/

ok so i'm so happy that Tina Fey won a golden globe :D best woman on television for sure :] even though she totally got snubbed on best tv comedy -_- but what upsets me most is Ellen Page's loss :/ she totally got robbed! her performance was spectacular but i guess giving a golden globe to an actress who played a happy pregnant teenager is just too much for "the academy" to handle -_- *sighes*
    Captain Jax Havok's picture

    ^^and another thing! :O

diablo cody got COMPLETELY robbed for not winning best screenplay for Juno! :O i mean, come ON. at least give the movie that! :[ there's no doubt that was the best writing all year but...adkfjhakjfa! ahhh frustration :/ haha

I'm gonna get shot for this

anna friel was seriously robbed. maybe it's because i don't watch 30 rock, but anna friel is seriously the best. she goes from quirky to serious back to quirky believably and just makes you root for her character. don't care, anna was robbed.
    Ediana's picture

    When something is robbed,

When something is robbed, this would tend to mean that something of extremely high quality lost to something significantly inferior.  Extras in 2007 (it's 6 episodes and 1 1/2 hour finale) was to at a level that few television comedies have ever reached.  It reached that special stratosphere that Simpsons season 4, Seinfeld season 4, and Arrested Development season 2 did.  I love 30 Rock but I would never pretend that 30 Rock is in the same class as Extras is because it is not.  That isn't meant to be mean but honest.  However if the situation was reversed I would not state that Extras got robbed.  While 30 Rock may not be close to Extras level I don't consider it something overwhelmingly inferior.  So to use a win by Extras as an example of robbery is rather overdone.

Samantha Morton's performance is as Myra Hindley, the infamous child killer, and the hairstyle is copied from photographs of Hindley in jail. That heavily praised film is very much worth seeing and contains terrific performances from Morton, Andy Serkis and especially Jim Broadbent.

The thought of Juno, a poorly written film, winning anything is hard to think of especially in a great year of film.  I like Ellen Page but that is a sad excuse for a film.  It's filmmaking 101, a real piece of junk.  It's also a shame that Cody and Reitman are getting a free pass on it, considering it's dodgy politics and shameful glossing over of the emotional toll of teen pregnancy and giving up one's child for adoption.

    Oh please EXTRA'S sucked

Oh please EXTRA'S sucked last season. It did not deserve to win any damn award other then most Dry Humor.

    P.S.

Just a little postscript to my earlier post... I in no way want anyone to believe that I think more of the fashion and the celeb factor than the art itself.  I was simply saying that I don't need an "awards show" to tell me what is good and not, because as others have mentioned awards show are pretty much a "pat on the back" to Hollywood.

I love and have always loved movies and I love seeing actors who are truly dedicated to their craft give their all and shine through with a performance that when you see it stays with you long after the film is done.  Even most actors acknowledge that they don't make movies for the awards they may receive but for the love of the work itself.  Therefore you could give me a news conference type setup every year and announce who won and let the winners give their thank you speeches and be done with it... I don't need the glitz and glamour to appreciate the work they have put into the performance.

But being honest, an awards show is 75% red carpet glitz and glamour and after parties when it really comes down to it, otherwise every entertainment show (ET, EXTRA, etc), wouldn't be around anymore, as it's exactly that... the fashion and the "gossip" that they cover-they certainly wouldn't be watched if all they covered were the craft of the actor.  So if you are going to have an awards show with the red carpet arrivals and such, well then...

I'm frankly not that impressed with awards shows as I (and surely scores of others) who have watched them over the years get incensed when someone wins in a category and we think that someone else should have won.  It seems that far too often awards shows come down to popularity and politics rather than the most deserving actor winning-though there are other times when exactly the right person wins and it leaves you feeling that all is right in the strange world of Hollywood.
