Golden Globe nominations: Jodie, Cate, "Juno," Tina and more

The nominations for the 2008 Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, and there are many AfterEllen.com favorites among the nominees. Here are the highlights:

MOVIES

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama

I'm thrilled to see Jodie on that list (especially considering the lukewarm reviews for The Brave One), but I'm even happier about Angelina's nomination. A Mighty Heart deserves a bigger audience, and Angelina deserves much more credit for her performance in it. I thought it was some of her finest work yet. Meanwhile, I can't wait to see Atonement — everybody's raving about it.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical

Oh — Ellen Page. Yes! Guess that movie got released just in time.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
  • Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There
  • Julia Roberts, Charlie Wilson's War
  • Saoirse Ronan, Atonement
  • Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
  • Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton

Wow. Julia's the only "normal" one here, if normal is a big Hollywood actress in a big Hollywood film. And Cate should have her own special award this year, for Best Performance by an Actress Playing a Guy. Otherwise, this is the category of People Who Aren't Household Names but Are Incredibly Awesome.

The Best Motion Picure — Drama category is quite male-oriented, with the notable (and exciting) exception of Atonement:

  • American Gangster
  • Atonement
  • Eastern Promises
  • The Great Debaters
  • Michael Clayton
  • No Country for Old Men
  • There Will Be Bood

And the Best Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical category includes some surprises:

Yay, Juno! Yay, Hairspray! And Across the Universe ... wha? Sorry, I guess I'm just a philistine when it comes to filmic interpretations of the Beatles catalogue. But hooray, that means there's a lesbian character in one of the nominated movies!

Other notable movie nominations include Diablo Cody for Best Screenplay (Juno), Persepolis for Best Foreign Language Film and Shakira for Best Original Song — Motion Picture ("Despedida," Love in the Time of Cholera).

TELEVISION

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama

I think they must have accidentally read my list of nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in My Most Erotic Dream Ever.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Comedy or Musical

Tina, America and Mary-Louise always get my love, but I'm so thrilled to see Christina Applegate here. If you haven't been watching Samantha Who? you must give it a try. It's surprisingly good.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Will The Starter Wife never die? Meanwhile, I bet AfterEllen.com is the only site you'll visit today that already has a post about Pictures of Hollis Woods. Our fingers are on the pulse, people!

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Hang in there, Jamie Pressly. You're the only good thing on that show.

Best Television Series — Drama

Yay for Damages! But, uh, The Tudors? Who knew that aggressive advertising during The L Word would pay off?

Best Television Series — Comedy or Musical

Californication?! Ick. Just give this to 30 Rock already.

The big surprise overall is that Atonement led all motion picture nominees, with seven nominations. Charlie Wilson's War is next with five, and Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men and Sweeney Todd each got four. In the television categories, Damages and Longford lead with four nominations, and 30 Rock got three.

The Golden Globe Awards presentation airs Jan. 13 on NBC.

Samantha Who and Christina Applegate...yes its a really good show, Applegate is hilariuos! I'm a fan :-P

Angelina Jolie, Helena Bonham Carter, Sally Fields....Good choices...Too bad that there are so many movies that I haven't seen...well good luck to all!

    Personally...

... rooting for the amazing Jodie Foster and Helena Bonham Carter like it's nobody's business.

And Mary-Louise Parker and Katherine Heigl. Well, really, it's Jodie Foster, all the time, for me - all the way until the bitter end :D

    i'm not dissappointed

i watched the nominations get announced this morning and i was suprisingly happy. yeh 30 rock. some really great nominations. i love awards season.  i'm going to make it my mission to watch the movies nominated for best movie comedy/drama... i know i might be in for a snoozefest but i'm determined. i actually just saw Waitress and thought it would get a nomination for best movie comedy.

I'm just cringing at the thought that Mad Men could actually win best tv drama series considering what i've heard about it here, but it seems to have alot of buzz.

    Nominations

i think Samantha Who is really funny. And Christina Applegate is hilarious. As for the films, I need to leave my computer long enough to see one. None of the dramas I watch made it unfortunately. :( CSI and Criminal Minds.

Angelina being nominated is important though, because I think people have forgotten that can be a really great actress when everything messes together right. After all she did win consecutive Golden Globes from 97-99. (George Wallace, Gia, and Girl, Interrupted)

    I'm really pleased with a

I'm really pleased with a number of the names and titles i see on this nomination list. I simply wish i'd have the chance to see more of them; i always feel a little odd when i regonize a name on a nominations list, but haven't seen the movie. I never know whether or not to cheer for them. Atonement, for instance, is a movie i've been waiting for with baited breath. I love the book and i'm a fan of Joe Wright and the movie's stars, but the movie is playing on a limited release, which means i probably won't get to see it until it's out on DVD. So do i cheer for Jodi Foster or Keira Knightley? I've seen the Brave One and i know Foster is amazing in it, but i also know that Knightley is a good actress and her role in Atonement is a good one.

    Where's the love?

I haven't seen all of the dramas for which the actresses were nominated, but man...I was really hoping to see Ashley Judd get a nod for Bug. The film itself might be a little weird for all the nominating committees, but hers was absolutely one of the best perfomances I've seen since...I don't know, Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream, I think.

I'm so shaking my fist in the air right now!  These damn kids.

I'm sure Jolie did a good

I'm sure Jolie did a good job in "A Mighty Heart", but I don't see how anyone can consciously back the film, since the producers decided to darken her skin and give her kinky hair for the role.  I have no problem with Jolie playing the part of Miriam Pearl, if she was the best actress for the role, then that's all that matters.  But there was no need to harken back to the days of blackface with the makeover that Jolie was given.  I don't understand why this little fact is not a big deal with those who report on the film, regardless of how good Jolie was.

    Actually her name is

Actually her name is Mariane and have you seen pictures of this woman? All they did was make her look more like the real person. I don't see the difference between that or any other make up look-a-like job when an actress or actor is portraying a real life person. Also I understand Mariane was closely involved with the movie herself so if she saw no problem....

    Huh?

I'll celebrate some of these nominees, but I'm a little taken aback by a few of these

I fail to understand what Katherine Heigl's done on Grey's Anatomy that warrants such recognition. Where's the nomination for Chandra Bailey or Sara Ramirez, both of whom had outstanding performances on the series this year?

And...no Best Comedy nomination for Ugly Betty?! I agree with the guys at After Elton who said...

angelina, jodie and cate in one category...

I have to agree with you, I think that katherine is a great actress, but chandra and sara and sandra oh are at least equally good. personally, I think that chandra and sara generally don't get enough requognition for their work on grey's - exept maybe here at afterellen.

yeay for rachel griffiths, she really deserved it - I love her on brothers & sisters!!

I won't be able to pick my favourite in the best actress in a drama category - I just loved jodie in the brave one, I am going to watch a mighty heart this weekend, but I know that angie is a great actress when the script is good and cate is just great as well. so, what am I gonna do???

    Grey's

I'm not a big fan of Katherine Heigl's admittedly, but even I thought she deserved recognition in her post-Denny performances. She was great. But I don't think Heigl's done anything that remarkable lately.

And when you compare her to Sandra Oh's performance at the end of Season 3 or the stellar performances of Chandra Wilson and Sara Ramirez this season...

    ...I just don't understand.

    two nominations for pushing daisies!

i wasn't really impressed with anna friel at first, but she's really come through and become one of the most heartwarming and loveable characters on the show. after ned of course. :)

    pushing dasies

I too am suprised about Anna Friel's nomination because she hasn't wowed me as much as kristen chenowith or Chi Macbride, especially Chi. they deserved to be nominated also but Lee Pace's nomination was well earned.

It was just pointed out to me that Desperate Housewives was not nominated ( yes the show has gone downhill) but Pushing daises was, and it reminded me of a prediction Sarah made in one of her vblog's earlier this year that Brian Fuller would be the new-hot-sought after producer/creator surpassing Marc Cherry. How true was that.

    Samantha Who?

I love this show I'm so pleased to see it up there.

Christina applegate rocks I used to love the show Jesse, I miss it so much. :(

    Yay for Shaki!

I'm wicked thrilled to see Despedida getting a nomination. The song makes my spine turn to jelly..in the most delightful way possible. She better win. The song deserves it. :)

heeeee heeee heeee! Christmas came early to me!

I smile, I grin, when the gal with a touch of sin walks in
I hope, and I pray, for a Hester to win just one more "A"

    thoughts

    on noms:

Actress/film/drama: seen every film except Atonement. And I've never been impressed with Keira.

My pick - Julie Christie , who was luminous in Away from Her, altho there were great moment from Jodie and Angelina. Cate wasn't brilliant in Elizabeth.

    Actress:film /comedy/musical: Ellen Page HURRAH!

Cate Blanchett should be in the Guy category for comedy/musical. She'd give Johnny Depp etal a run for their money. She nailed it in I'm Not There.

Best Pic - Comedy/musical: Juno Bravo!

Best Screen play: Diablo Cody YAY!

Supporting Actress TV drama: Katherine Heigl @#$%^&*(WTF! I totally disagree. Katherine's a total amatuer compared to Chandra or Sandra.

ANd where's Life? Is it too new a series?

    So many choices...

Argh... I was a bit stressed when the nominations came out today, as there were so many good choices in a variety of nominated categories that I'll either be happy no matter who wins or be completely upset by who wins, as I was secretly hoping it would be the other person.

Case in point... Best Actress is a category rich in great acting.  I'm thrilled Jodie Foster got a nom, but Angelina Jolie in A Mighty Heart was so great, but then again try to find fault in the work of Julie Christie (that was a brilliant acting job as well)... at least with Cate, she's up for Best Supporting Actress in what I understand to be a role that she just owns.  As for Atonement I'm hearing major buzz on that one and Keira as well, so...

I was hoping to head out to LA for The Golden Globes, but then I heard that if the writers strike isn't resolved many of the actors won't cross the picket lines, so the show will be sorely lacking.  I guess I'll bide my time and head out to LA for the Spirit Awards and the Oscars... hopefully the writers strike will be resolved by that time.

No matter what, it'll be interesting to see who wins in each category this year. While there were so many great nominees this year there were once again a great many well deserving movies/directors/actors/actresses that were snubbed in many of the categories as well.  I guess you can't please everyone.

    angie and 30 rock

i was pleasantly surprised with this year's nominations. i like that some obscure films are getting recognized, but there is a great balance of that with the more mainstream stuff.

i thought some of this year's mainstream stuff was just magical. i happened to love "across the universe" and "hairspray" is a gem. but i have to say that angelina jolie's performance in "a mighty heart" was by far the best of the year. she's had her moments of popcorn fluffy movies, and just plain tripe lately...but this performance was gut wrenching and truly harks back the early days, and all of those fine performances she had.

i also have to express my sheer joy at seeing "30 rock" getting the recognition it SO deserves. i just hope this means more people are watching it...and we don't have another "arrested development" on our hands. if "30 rock" went off the air i would be devastated!

also...has anyone noticed the constant lesbian references on the show lately? i love it!!!

ANGIE AND TINA ALL THE WAY!
