Gina Gershon rocks, or at least tries to

I kind of enjoyed Prey for Rock and Roll. Come on, admit it: You did too. A little bit, right? Especially when Gina Gershon was acting really gay. It's hard not to enjoy that just a tad.

In one of those ill-considered instances of life-imitating-pseudo-art, yesterday Gershon released an album called In Search of Cleo. The NewNowNext blog has the scoop.

I don't know about this. She seems like a rock star, but she just isn't. Something's missing. And the "Cleo" of the album title is her cat, which is not a rock-star-ish move at all. Neither is the fact that the CD is, and I quote, "beautifullly packaged in a digipak design that has a 12 page booklet with both lyrics handwritten and original illustrations by Gina." You can even pay extra for an autographed copy. Do I detect a hint of desperation, or is it just amateurism? The whole thing — especially the cover photo — seems like it's right out of a Christopher Guest mockumentary.

In Search of Cleo was released yesterday (on iTunes, eMusic and the usual other places), and so far the buzz is not exactly positive. I hate to say it, Gina, but looking good in headbanger accoutrements doesn't mean you can actually rock.

Here's the video for "Watch Over Me," in which Gershon sort of sounds like a drunken, congested Chrissie Hynde:

Any takers — think you'll download the album? Or is Gershon's dykon status (and rock star potential, such as it is) fading fast?

ew ew.. I'm sorry but I just don't like it.  It feels like she is trying to hard.  To me I think she is losing a little bit of credibility with this album out, does anyone else feel that way?

    These go to 11...

oh, it is NOT a mockumentary band? Ooops. Must have been the presence of Christopher Guest.

No, this is just bad. The Chrissy Hynde comment is close... but I think more like a bad Patsy Cline impersonator... or maybe someone trying too hard at karaoke.

If we did not know it is Gina, I would say it is utterly forgettable. Now it has a place right next to Showgirls on her resume.

That video was more boring than home movies. What was she thinking? The song is pretty bad too. I think I felt a little embarassed for her while watching it.

    You're kidding!

You all hated this? I absolutely loved it!

    ...

Okay, alright I'll admit it: I lied.

I actually hope never to have to watch/hear that again.

    Hmmm..

Oh dear, this really isn't very good is it? Like somebody else said, bad Patsy Cline. And the song is awful. I feel sad for her :(

    OK!

I think Gina is pretty hot but that video was awful and the song was pretty bad too.  Maybe I am just not into that kinda music .... I thought she would go for something a bit more edgy.  I saw her singing in a movie called Dreamland and though it was pretty good then and she doesn't have a bad voice but that song didn't do it for me at all!!!

    Gina <3

I SO enjoyed Prey for Rock & Roll, Gina Gershon was hot as hell.

I will admit that song is pretty boring, I really like House of Woe that you can hear on her myspace http://www.myspace.com/ginagershon

    to be honest......

I can’t stand this, and that is the nicest way I can put it! It sounds like a Karaoke version of the song. I mean I don’t mean to sound offensive its not like she has a bad voice its just very badly done! Is it me or by looking at Gina Gershon are you not expecting a different kind of sound than the one you get?

    song sucks...

Yeah, it's no good but Gina has a nice voice! She could win some serious karaoke money.

For one, it's not even a rock album, she's not going for Prey II with this album. I love the album and I think her voice is great, especially for the type of music she's doing now. But, if you guys don't like it? More for me, I guess.

    Sorry G.G...

Sorry G.G, I really wanted to like it, I really did, but I just can't sit through that again.

    Oh Gina...

I do love me some Gina... but this was not my cuppa tea.  I went back and listened to some of the stuff on Prey... much better, much more rock.  Much better on her. Much better for me :)

Cleo feels like an experimental foray for Ms. Gershon.  Like... she knows she can rock and stuff, so let's try some mellower, more offbeat fare.  "That'll REALLY cement my bad-ass status.  Keep 'em guessin'!"

    Just my opinion.

    something missing indeed....

Scribegrrrl sort of got to how I feel. There's just something missing from Gina's singing voice. God knows I love the girl, but the voice just doesn't do it for me. It's not bad by any means, I don't find it near as terrible as some of the comments on here suggests, it's just....meh. Like you expect the girl with all the strength and sexuality on screen to bring something more exciting to a song. It's a good base, I just wish there was more power there.
