Five great goodbyes

So, as I mentioned in the L Word recap this week, today is my last day as an AfterEllen.com staffer. (I just have a new job; there’s no big drama here.) I’ll miss this place! To commemorate the day (yes, I’m commemorating myself — so?), here are some goodbye scenes and songs that say farewell better than I ever could.

The Way We Were, final scene

It’s the laughter we’ll remember. And the greatness of Barbra.

Casablanca, “We’ll always have Paris”

We’ll always have AfterEllen.com. Somehow that doesn’t have the same ring to it.

The Carol Burnett Show, “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together”

She’s a genius. I’m tugging my ear.

The Wizard of Oz, “You’ve always had the power”

Everyone loves the heel-clicking, but Dorothy’s speech just before that is even better.

The Sound of Music, “So Long, Farewell”

I love this movie. I love Julie Andrews. I love nuns who sabotage cars and play guitars. And when the audience sings “goodbye” back to the kids, I get a little choked up. I can think of no better note to go out on!

And here’s one more goodbye: So long and thanks, everybody. Drop me a line (scribegrrrl at gmail.com) once in a while. And expect me to show up here again from time to time, wondering what I’ve missed and whether Queen Latifah has come out yet.

P.S. I still don’t know whether I’ll have time to do the recaps for the final season of The L Word — I’ll have to see how things go. And no amount of cajoling or promises of Bette Porter on my doorstep will hasten my decision. OK, maybe that last thing would.
