News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

TV alert: "Five Days" on HBO tonight

I don't know anything about Five Days. Well, I know a couple of things: Entertainment Weekly gave it an A-, and Janet McTeer plays a detective in it. That last thing is more than enough to make me tune in.

You might know McTeer from Songcatcher, Daphne or Portrait of a Marriage, or maybe you saw her Tony Award–winning turn on Broadway in A Doll's House (in which case I shake my fist at you in sheer jealousy). If you haven't heard of McTeer, let me just tell you that she's tall, stunning and very gifted — and her voice and accent are goosebump-inducing.

But back to Five Days: It's a five-part mystery/miniseries, and it starts tonight on HBO (you can stream episode one on the HBO site today). And Janet McTeer is in it.

It's got to be on video

Hey scribegrrl, that production of A Doll's House was broadcast on PBS back in the day.  I remember watching it and being absolutely blown away by McTeer, developing a crush on her which has lasted to this day.  (And her role in Daphne had absolutely nothing to do with it.  I swear.)  Anyway, it's got to be available on video somewhere--doesn't PBS release those things on DVD?  Or if not then at the Musem of TV and Radio.

    FYI, Sarah Smart...

Sarah Smart, who was so great as lesbian Virginia in the British series At Home With the Braithwaites, is also in Five Days.

    the smart money

ooh yes!  that was fab, and it had the goygeous Amanda Redman in it as well.  it was kind of left dangling, wasn't it?  i always expected another series, but it never did materialise........sigh.........

    At Home With the Braithwaites

Yes, I'd heard that things were left unresolved at the end of the last series.  Even though I loved the show, I only watched the first two series of it (on BBC America and then DVD).  After having been hurt so badly by Season 6 of Buffy and the end of Xena around that same time, and the bits and pieces of the last two series that I'd heard about, I was very happy to leave off with the Braithwaites with Virginia and Tamsin happy and together.

You know, I think that Virginia and Tamsin are two of the best lesbian TV characters that we've had, yet I can't recall one mention of At Home With the Braithwaites on AfterEllen.  Am I right about that?

Anyway, the first two series/seasons of At Home With the Braithwaites are out here in the U.S. for those who are interested.

    what's it all about, Malfi?

ever since watching "Portrait Of A Marriage" on BBC2 in the early 90s, i've loved Janet McTeer (something about that cross-dressing swagger - i swear i almost fainted at the start of episode 2 when she hove into view dressed as a WWI soldier...).  that voice! those eyes! that mouth! those....erm....vowels!

anyhoo, such is my ardour (and, to be fair, that of my friends) that we went to see her on stage here in Edinburgh in a very full-blooded production of "The Duchess Of Malfi".  which was great, apart from it was a matinée full of pensioners, several of whom snored their way through the latter stages of the play.  but Janet, she's a trooper, and never once let on that she - and everybody else in the theatre - could hear the rattle of false teeth.  bless her.

    i approve.

janet mcteer is so amazing. portrait of a marriage was fantastic and so over the top in the best possible way. and she was the only good thing about that trashy daphne dumaurier movie. i also loved her in "the amazing mrs pritchard". if you can find it and are a fan of gardening (or even if you aren't) pick up the audiobook version of the vita sackville-west book "in your garden". janet mcteer reads it and even if you aren't a gardener its irresistible. vita's writing and janet's voice are the perfect combination.

    anyway, more janet mcteer please!!

Janet on Charlie Rose - delightful!

I LOVE Janet McTeer! I’m embarrassed to admit that I had seen many of her film and TV appearances before I realized they were all played by the same woman! She is an amazing chameleon.

I know it’s not the same as seeing her in A Doll’s House, but YouTube has a great interview Charlie Rose did with her when she was appearing in A Doll’s House on Broadway. She is charming. My favorite Janet quotation from the interview is “I’m not really a frock kind of girl.” She is interviewed in the second half of the show (the great cast of Chicago is the first half): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgZNdAUxgAo.
