In praise of female singer-songwritersYou know how sometimes you come across something online and it seems like it was written just for you? I mean, to the point that it's almost scary? EW.com has looked into my soul with a new feature called "Female Singer-Songwriters: The New Wave." (The print version is called "EW's Latest Aural Fixations," which is a way better title.) It highlights nine new artists, from Ingrid Michaelson to Yael Naim to Kate Walsh — and Missy Higgins, too. Sounds like a list of AfterEllen.com faves, doesn't it? Missy Higgins The feature includes links to the artists' MySpace pages, as well as brief bios and helpful artistic comparisons (e.g., you'll like Marié Digby if you like Vanessa Carlton). But there are no videos included, so allow me to provide a sampling!
I'm glad the singer-songwriter thing is cool again. Whether it's Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell, Jane Siberry or even someone whose name doesn't start with a J, I've always loved the genre, if you can call it that. And to me, it goes way beyond Lilith Fair, though that's what EW.com compares this "new wave" to. Female musicians who write and sing have definitely been rare lately, leaving capable songstresses like Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos to keep the fires burning. But now the whole forest is ablaze! (OK, clearly this metaphor is getting away from me.) Laura Marling Ingrid Michaelson It's interesting that female singer-songwriters seem to be charting their own courses — getting things done via MySpace and TV commercials, rather than record labels. Sisters still have to do it for themselves sometimes. Visit EW.com for more pretty pictures. I must say, though, that EW's list (and maybe the genre generally) is quite white. Where's the modern-day Joan Armatrading? Well, I guess that would still be Joan herself.
One more thing: Doesn't Kate Voegele (whose tracks were featured on One Tree Hill) totally look like Adele on The L Word? Kate Voegele OMG, maybe this is more than just one pair of doppelgangers — it could be a whole race of clones! Submitted by on March 5, 2008 - 3:53pm. |

omg!
Dawn!
I saw Dawn Landes last week, supporting Jason Isbell and (my favorite!) Will Hoge. I had never heard of Dawn before, but she definitely impressed me.
Read more about the show at my blog, the February 27th post:

kate voegele
i discovered Kate watching one tree hill and i have promised myself to download her music.
Anybody saw last weeks episode where they were shooting a music video of her song. I loved that song. Maybe this will prompt me to find it's title. Anybody know offhand?
I think the song is "No Good"
got it
with a little digging i found it. I think 'No good' was in an earlier episode.
This one was in episode 5.09 - title- " it's only life"

Tegan and Sara
I don't really think they
I don't really think they fit in this category; maybe if the list had been made say seven years ago, but not now.
On the other hand, ANY mention og Tegan and Sara is good - doesn't really matter how, why or where ;)
"Even in death Gabrielle, I will never leave you"- Xena

For all the Missy Higgins
Missy Higgins
I have recently discovered Missy Higgins and I'm a huge fan now. Her website is showing that her Bowery show is sold out, as is the only other one I'd be able to make in Baltimore.
Other artists:
Doria Roberts
Sherri Jackson
Tracy Chapman
if you really really want to
Rock n Roll...
I saw Missy Higgins perform last night and she is AMAZING live. You think she sounds good on her cd, hear (and see her) live!
During one break in the show a female fan threw a bra onstage with a note attatched to it. Missy then proceeded to not only pick up the bra but put it on over her clothers and sang an entire song with it on. Talk about a good singer. She did mention she felt, "so rock n roll".
Seriously, CHECK HER OUT!
Hotel Cafe Tour
If you're looking to see some of the best singer/songwriter talent out, I recommend checking out the Hotel Cafe Tour when it comes to a city near you. The line-up varies by leg, but some of the performers include: Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, Priscilla Ahn, Meiko, Kate Havnevik, Jessie Baylin, Jesca Hoop, Holly Conlan and William Fitzsimmons (alright, he doesn't really fit with the others I listed--not as cute--but his music is absolutely amazing).

Geoffrey: You fool! As if it matters how a man falls down.
Richard: When the fall is all that is left, it matters a great deal.

Missy Higgins
My heart started racing when I saw Missy's mug. I wanna be in NYC. :( Waaahhh! I missed her the one and probably only time she will ever be in my hometown. She's on my dream list of performers to see live.
I hope to catch Kate sometime soon. We'll see if I can make it happen.
ingrid michaelson and missy higs!!
I saw Ingrid perform at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston a few weeks ago. She was absolutely amazing! She is so hilarious and puts on an excellent show. I'm also going to see Missy Higgins at the same place on Marh 14th, soooo excited!
LOVE ALL THOSE LADIES MENTIONED IN THE POST!! =)
Hanne Hukkelberg...
I've always been into the singer-songwriter thing, but somehow I don't 'get' most of these here. Laura Marling's other songs bore me (I think it's the guitar), Missy Higgins is a bit too something, Ingrid Michaelson is too Feist-y, and Dawn Landes sounds like someone I really oughta be into, but no.
So I'll add Hanne Hukkelberg (go to http://aurgasm.us) to the list and say pretty much anything on the French lable Fargo Records is pretty good, though alas I guess Dawn Landes is a bit of an exception for me (there's something about Alela Diane's 'Pirate's gospel' though, even if I can't seem to stand any of her performance videos on youtube).
Sarah Slean
If you really like singer-songwriters check out Sarah Slean! She is like Canadas answer to Tori Amos ... and really hot to boot.

Duffy
