TV alert: "Ellen's Really Big Show" on TBS

Tonight on TBS (9:00 ET), Ellen DeGeneres recreates the magic of variety shows. If you love The Carol Burnett Show, Sonny & Cher or even American Idol, you'll probably enjoy Ellen's Really Big Show.

I'm definitely looking forward to this. When I was a wee thing, variety shows gave stars the chance to be artists in a broader sense. They could just do their thing — not necessarily the thing they were most famous for, but whatever they wanted to explore. Yeah, sometimes they chose to explore plate-spinning and finger puppets, but nowadays that might seem refreshing. They just don't make 'em like The Shields & Yarnell Show anymore. Not to mention Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters (Irlene!) or Pink Lady and Jeff.

Ellen's star-studded show features Mary J. Blige, Barry Manilow and Sheryl Crow, but presumably no WGA members or pet adoption agencies.

Here are some sneak peeks:

    She'll do a great job!

I like Ellen, and I think she'll do a good job with her big show. It definitely looks very BIG. The Peking Acrobats remind me of my childhood and a circus we went to see. What happened with her and the whole WGA thing? Is she doing the shows in NY even though the writer's strike?

    Thanks for the tip, Scribe!

It is hard to follow some stories from here, even though everything is on the net! I hope the strike ends soon so everybody can get back to work and get the money they deserve for their work!

    Weird

    That's a weird musical line-up isn't it?

Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow and Barry Manilow?!

I thought Ellen'd be looking for something more danceable.

The Peking Acrobats are amazing!  But a variety of them (I don't pun) have been on so many shows lately: AGT, Survivor, something else and I've seen some live a couple of times.  They're all really good.

Edit: Boo! I just realized that there's no TBS here anymore.  It's some PeachTree Channel now.  :(

    Heroes

It's on opposite Heroes. I can't miss Heroes. Even if I could, the whole time during the Really Big Shoo I'd be wondering what was happening on Heroes. So nothing I'd be watching would go beyond being an inverted image at the back of my eyeballs.

    I'll be watching!

TBS will be repeating the show...right after it is aired for the first time...so you should be able to enjoy Heroes and then Ellen's variety show!  = ]

    Journeyman

Thanks, Pye! Now if I can just pry the clicker away from a certain Journeyman addict I'll be all set :)

No need to wrestle for the remote!

Unless you like that kind of thing.  ; )

But anyway...Ellen's variety show is an hour and a half...so that means you all could watch Journeyman...missing just the 1st half hour of Ellen's show...and then settle in to watch the rest of Ellen's version of Sonny and Cher...minus Sonny...and Cher...but with a hint of Chastity.  : )

Why oh why don't I have

Why oh why don't I have cable!?!?!? :( :( I barely even get the basics... I am going to have to just hope for youtube clips and such.

    I'm sure it'll be a fantastic show!

    Awesome

So glad you mentioned this. I had totally spaced on this being on tonight.

It will be interesting to see how it is. I've always felt like the variety show died out because there were so few triple threats left to host or star in this style of show. Ellen should have Nathan Lane on, or Bernadette, but then I guess most people wouldn't know who they are.

    Is it just me

or is she using the same font as the big gay/straight sketch show?

I suspect Ellen has jumped the shark for me...

I can't watch her shows anymore. I find her insane over the top audience quite creepy. Then Iggy...then WGA...just pushed it over the edge for me.

    I'm so over her.

    solesister's picture

Ellen - so over her too

I'm with nososhane on this one, she's kind of getting on my nerves now and have really gone off her big time......such a shame, you always like a lesbian to be up there supporting the little guy - the WGA did it for me too !
