Glenn Close and Rose Byrne collect "Damages"

On basic cable, July is busting out all over. We'll soon be able to enjoy not just one, but four — four! — shows with strong female leads. The Closer has set the tone, and soon State of Mind (on Lifetime July 15, starring Lili Taylor) and Saving Grace (on TNT July 23, starring Holly Hunter) will join the fray. We're spoilt for choice.

But guess which new show I'm anticipating most eagerly? That would be Damages, premiering July 24 on FX. Glenn Close plays hot-shot New York litigator Patty Hewes, who, along with her protégé Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne, Marie Antoinette, The Dead Girl, 28 Weeks Later), takes on an allegedly corrupt CEO.

Of her character, Close has this to say:

"She has a marriage with a sexy man, and it's very unexpected and great. I'm blessed to have this, it's fun, it's flexing my creative muscle."

Uh, yeah. The marriage with the sexy man. Totally the part I'm looking forward to. But I get what she's saying:

"I think it's problematic, when a woman leaves her 30s in Hollywood, to get really good parts. The great irony for women is we only get better, but I think we don't become as clearly sexual objects. That's just the way it is."

Better. Sexual. Sold! As if the prospect of Close in her prime weren't enough, we also get Byrne in her bloom:

Close's character is ambitious and ruthless — and refreshingly unapologetic — while Byrne's character is a little naive but just as driven. Maybe the mentor-mentee thing isn't a new idea in the land of legal thrillers, but how often are both parties female?

And the other characters seem interesting too, even Ted Danson's (can't say I'm a fan). He plays the CEO in question. In all the clips and trailers I've seen, Damages looks both fierce and funny. Here's a preview:

And here's a closer look at Patty and Ellen:

    Damages

There's something in the manner in which Close levels a gaze at you and sets a harsh line to her mouth that is entirely unnerving. From what I've seen of Damages this is the perfect role and show for her.

    Awesome promo pic

Based on the homoerotic subtext of that promo pic alone, I would watch this series! And yes, it's extremely rare to see a TV series focusing on the relationship between two female leads these days. This can be like "Xena: Warrior Princess", except everyone is in business suits.

    I guess I can hope,

Pray, and dream for some action. I'm not talking about the the gun fighting and violent action either. Either way it looks sexy. -Rachel

    wow

looks like at great show, which would normally mean we wont get in here in Australia. However, considering Rose one of ours, there may be a chance ;-)

Was it just me or did the promos of Patty and Ellen relationship show a darker version of Miranda and Andi?

    damaged, I tell ya

The very definition of ‘bittersweet’:  coming home 2 wks ago to find they’re filming an epi of “Damages” on my block.  Not just on my block – Right. Outside. My. Window.  I grabbed my phone to snap a pic of Ms. Close.

And found out she wasn’t on set that day.

    Yes, ‘bittersweet.’  Emphasis on bitter...

    But the show looks sweet!

    so excited for this

I am so, so excited for Damages. It looks fantastic! I love this trend toward having strong interesting female leads carrying shows, and as I love love love Glenn Close, I can't imagine a better actress to put in this part, it seems like a tailor-made role for her too. I am so happy she's going to be on my TV on a weekly basis.

    Seems like a very

Seems like a very interesting series, to say the least! I always liked Glen Close, even when she was the crazy nut of Fatal Attraction! LOL... and this one looks promising.  I need to get back to the US, if only to watch better TV!

    close

    Close is an utter genius.

I still find her slightly..well...terrifying though! I cant quite seem to shake off the startling image of the frazzled, frustrated and fightening  face of Cruella De Vil out of my mind. But still, Serving in Silence was on TV here this week and as i had the house to myself i watched it on the big TV downstairs and WOW!!! She is amazing. I have a new found respect for her and she can act a hell of a lot better than i ever gave her credit for.

    Go Glenn!!!

    glenn close

Oh yeah she can act. You should see her in "The Lion In Winter". And I love her in "Serving in Silence". I don't know how many times i watched this movie (maybe 20  in one month)

    Anastasia Griffith *melts*

I've been waiting for this show to come out ever since I found out that Anastasia Griffith was going to be in it... she's the baby sister of uber-GLBT-friendly Jamie Bamber of Battlestar Galactica and Horatio Hornblower fame, and someone I've been tracking for quite a while (ok, well, ever since I figured out that I was a lesbian and that Jamie Bamber would be /perfect/ if he was only a woman, and then I saw pictures of his sister and saw her act, and realised my wish had come true.... er yes. Off-topic.). But Anastasia + Glen + Rose makes for a /wonderful/ cast so far, even if I do end up wanting to throw up every now and then with the flash-forwards. ;-)

    Anastasia

puts Rose Byrne to shame in this show.  I find Kate's character far more interesting and compelling than Rose's.  And, oh yeah, Anastasia acts the SHIT outta that role.  In contrast, I find myself wanting to check Rose's wrist to see if she's even got a pulse....

Glenn?  Always amazing and a pleasure to watch.
