Coral from "The Real World" comes outCoral Smith, best known as a cast member on The Real World: Back to New York, is "venturing toward her lesbian qualities." Or at least that's what told Outlook Magazine, in an interview that makes the mind boggle — and not just because (as she herself notes) Coral has “very big boobs."
Gosh. What a lucky gal. But back to the "lesbian qualities" thing. "Lesbian tendencies" I've heard, but "qualities" is a new one to me. What are those, exactly? Does she mean her ring finger is longer than her index finger? Or perhaps she has a fondness for cats. Evidence definitely points to her not having much of a sense of humor. But we can all learn a lot from Coral about homophobia, which she attributes to the aging population:
This is exactly what I was telling the cabana girl in Rio last weekend! Interestingly, Coral calls herself "old" at 28. But she doesn't like other labels:
I guess for Coral, being "regular" means not doing anything crazy like questioning gender roles, speaking out against oppression or, uh, voting. She may not care whether the 2008 election yields a woman, a black man, a Mormon or a WASP as president, but she sure is supportive of her new community (because gay events "show we're capable and can run s---"). And she hopes to get some support in exchange, because she's a little nervous about coming out.
Coral, you’re not much for flowery language, but we’re still happy you decided to come out publicly. We’re all about visibility, even for has-been reality stars like you. Oops! That was mean. But, well, snarkiness is a lesbian quality, so I'm sure you understand. Submitted by on June 20, 2007 - 9:15am. |

Eep
oh silly you!
hehehehehe
This just makes me giggle... I used to think she'd be cool to kiss, since she is pretty intense. Heh... Coral plays for MY team, no wonder I am always so competitive.
" But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East and Juliet is the sun! Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon." - Sometimes I feel like Romeo.
...
I've always loved Coral...very intense...very funny...and very classy...LOL
Holy FRAK!
Now that is news for this MTV junkie. I'm not a reality television girl unless it is The Real World and/or Road Rules. I'm helpless when there is an Inferno marathon. I'm stuck for hours no matter whether I saw the episode the night before or not. Coral is kick ass crazy. All I can say is I really hope she'll do another round of the competition cause I'd love to see her "out" in that environment.
I will never knock The Real World because that show has done more for gay/lesbian visibility than any other teen targeted televison. Pedro changed my life. And the following seasons presented the first occurances of out lesbians being on my tv/in my living room.
Wow.
My sentiments, exactly. I love Coral and I'm a total (old-school) Real World junkie. I love the challenges. But, I miss Veronica and Rachel.
Yay, for Coral!
~It means pride.~
and I thought I was a big fan!
I could not agree with you more. How about that Coral and Evan duo? At the end of every missions they practically laughed about how easy it was to beat everyone. Yep.. she's "kick ass crazy", you said it all!
"When Willa turned and kissed her, Louie thought in her head, this is my first kiss. It wasn't, of course, she'd kissed a number of boys, and done more too, but she'd never, ever felt as if she were falling off a cliff." Dare Truth or Promise
Tatas!!
E-gaaad those are huge!!
In other news, I think the real world would do a great service to the community by having an out lesbian now, instead of the usual gay men. When those girls (Rachel and some other girl...) had that threesome and they were rumored to be lady lovas, I remember having a positive conversation about them with some friends, including my "best friend" since birth who told me that people who can't have children shouldn't get married and that she doesn't believe in lesbians (so I thiiink her [ultra conservative] parents maaay have installed some of these "holy" values into her since birth)!! But she wasn't part of the positive talk, more of the me hoping that she caves into the positive gay peer pressure. And I'm still "best friends" with this girl! Whadafuh...
Real World
wow...
I really did not see this coming!
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication
I'm not surprised
what the ...
"I’m attracted to beautiful women. Beautiful women tend to be attracted to me."
Best quote ever. So down to earth, that girl. And I'm so glad to know there is no homophobia in Brazil! Go Coral. Go go.
I Knew It!
Is it just me??
lesbian without borders
*smacks my forehead*
Australia gay friendly hey? Thats a new one!
We can't stop here, this is bat country!
I'm holding out on the headthumps until I know if she's kidding
I think that was a joke. I hope that was a joke, because if it wasn't then she's obviously never heard a word that's come out of John Howard's mouth...and by mouth, I do mean ass.

Re Adoption by same-sex couples: 'Mr Howard said today he believed children should ideally have a mother and a father.
"It gives children the best opportunity in life," he said on Southern Cross radio.
"I know for some that sounds harsh, I don't think it's harsh, I think it's something that most people believe is the desired, the ideal outcome.'
Uhuh. I'm not entirely sure I just heard what you said, Johnno; I think your words were sorta muffled due to the placement of your nose, shoved up Bush's posterior.
However, http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,21310074-5005941,00.html it's getting somewhere without Howard. Kinda. I still think America has it better. I reckon it's better to have those views because they're yours rather than because you want to ingratiate yourself with someone with a little bit more power. At least give our country a little bit of dignity, hmm? Ah well, we'll get ours in the next election...Oh wait, no we won't, because every leader with a chance of getting in is a carbon copy of Howard! Who, in turn, is carbonated Bush! Haha, he's a carbonised tree.
Surprised, not so much
I'm am rather surprised by this interview, though. As a long-time Coral fan, she's usually much more articulate and witty. Bitchy, yes, but not generally incoherent.
Way back when, somewhere between her RW season and her first couple of RW/RR challenges, there were some heavy-duty rumors swirling about her "lesbian tendencies," but they were always to the "a friend of a friend of so-and-so hooked up with Coral" variety. At the time they seemed the garden-variety rumors that even a quasi-celeb such as Ms. Brown might have to endure. Sometimes where there's smoke, there actually is fire, or at least an ember.
This changes nothing, though because my favorite RW lesbian will always, always be Genesis Moss.
New York Mag
This "lesbian qualities" thing is (sort of) mentioned in an interesting article in this week's New York Mag entitled "The Science of Gaydar".
I suggest you check it out, scribe - and everyone else too.
Here: http://nymag.com/news/features/33520/
"In many other studies, though, lesbians have appeared less unique than gay men, leading some people to wonder if their sexual orientation is innate. Michael Bailey—who, as a heterosexual researcher, is a minority in this field—even doubts the existence of female sexual orientation, if by orientation we mean a fundamental drive that defies our conscious choices. He bases this provocative gambit on a sexual-arousal study he and his students conducted. When shown pornographic videos, men have an undeniable response either to gay or straight images but not both, according to sensitive gauges attached to their genitals—it’s that binary. Female sexual response is more democratic, opaque, and unpredictable"
“What I do think it’s time to do is admit that female sexuality looks in some ways very different from male sexuality, and that there is no clear analog in women of men’s directed sexual-arousal pattern, which I think is their sexual orientation. I am not sure that women don’t have a sexual orientation, but it is certainly unclear that they do.”

Thanks for posting this and linking to the article Marianna -- it was an interesting read. A gay hair whorl -- who knew?!
Coral gave this interview during a Gay Day event at a California amusement park, so it is very likely she was in the company of others when it was conducted, thus the "she's not my girlfriend" comment. In that context, it didn't come across as defensive, but more matter of fact. To me, anyway.
Some of the other comments though, still, oh vey.
Apparently some of these raised by MTV fauxlebrities will never learn that it is okay to walk by a microphone and not feel compelled to say something. I give major props to the ones who just walk away from their time and never look back, like Julie from S1/NY.
What The?
She’s not my girlfriend. I’m attracted to beautiful women. Beautiful women tend to be attracted to me. It really seems to work out for me. - Quoted...
How hard life must be for you, Coral. Beautiful people? Deary me! I hate to sound rather dreary, and what not, but seriously, if this is as deep as she gets.... because I honestly admit to not bothering with the rest of the article after reading that... then I daresay she'll turn out to be another Anne Heche. Aliens, anyone?
Back to RENT!
When she calls my name, I turn and in that instant I lose my heart. This is the love of my life.

Go figure
I couldn't stand Coral when she was on RW back to New York. Yet she grew on me with her
"I don't wrestle, I (expletive) beat b!tches up" quote. Ah I love a classy girl.
I won't make any snide comments about her interview though. It seems her ginormous breasts have beaten my snark into submission.
Anyway while we are talking RW, Melisa Howard from RW Orleans also needs to explore her "lesbian qualities".
I always thought Melissa and
My Homegirl!
I stand by the fact that if I ever met Coral, we would be homegirls. If any one here has ever read Melissa's blog and see Coral through her eyes you would fall in love with Coral in a completely platonic way of course. Coral is fiercely loyal, funny, generous, kind and compassionate. If you read the article she works at a rape conseling center and (I believe) she used her winnings from one of the challenges to set up a non-profit.
Seriously, Holla at ya girl, Coral!
Also AfterEllen is like 4 days late on this news.
Does anyone know?
Who's Melissa? her girlfriend?
In view of the fact that God limited the intelligence of man, it seems unfair that he did not also limit his stupidity.

Part Bitch, Part Comic
I was joking about her not having a sense of humor.
It was like oh, let's check off the qualities; yep, this one and this one and this one ... it was all snark. Sorry if that was unclear.
It's really too bad...
This is my last Coral stanning post.
I don't know if I'm down with calling an opinionated black woman a bitch so effortlessly. How many people have called Rosie O'Donnell a cunt for her decidedly cunty behaviour? Right people would use different terminology for that behaviour.
And if anybody has seen her shows, she's not really serious. It's obvious when she's being serious and joking around as mentioned by the kind poster above.
Captain Save a Ho is Here
You forgot stupid, they think she is stupid too.
Apparently few here have enough of a sense of humor to realize many of her comments were jokes in true Coral fashion
If there were more lesbians like Coral I think I would actually associate with the “lesbian community” rather than visit from time to time.
Also notice how the writer of this article gracefully omits the serious notes of the full article, such as the fact that she does indeed work in a rape crisis center.
Or what she was saying before she mentioned old people should die so we can have a party.
To quote the interview:
“At the time I came out, I was dating someone really special. I wanted to introduce them. That was my thing: If I’m dating someone really, really, really special, that was the time to come out. I wanted to introduce them to the woman I love. It was all about timing for me…We have to have an excuse, that relationship to “validate” us. It becomes, “It’s because I love her, as a person. It doesn’t anything to do with me being gay . . .”
And I’m glad she mentioned that last part because I always told myself the same thing. That I would come out to my family when I was in a serious relationship, never mind the fact that I hoped this wouldn’t occur until I turn 40. So of course it was a cop out and I should have just jumped out waving a big flaming gay flag! no not really but you catch my drift.
This blog post is pure spin and it doesn’t take much for some people to be spun.
as the illustrious Flavor Flav would say : /
Don’t believe the hype----boooy
It's a bird. It's a plane. It's a Honda Hybrid on some 24's
Why thanks Captain Save A Ho. You're so dreamy. Lol. Let me stop.
I cosign your sentiments.
try a chevy nova on 18's
Subwoofers!? Better put some 808's on that Bitch!
Why am I showing out today?
If you are a Captain Save A Ho remember the words of the illustrious Project Pat.
"Don't save her. She don't want to be saved."
I just worked my way up from a Hello Kitty boom box
Ah yes my arch enemy, Project Pat
If it weren't for his "bald headed skally wags" I wouldn't be in this
Now if you'll excuse me, I hear someone calling my name.
It's official
Ha! Tangent much?.
Ha! Tangent much?.
*grins stupidly*
I stand by what I said earlier, but add that my tone is almost always sarcastic here. I should have read the whole article, I'm a bit addicted to Scribe and I like the snark. It goes over my head, but there you have it.
*does geeky Xena dance, you know, from A Tale Of Two Muses* Respect the Geek.
When she calls my name, I turn and in that instant I lose my heart. This is the love of my life.

so...is lack of articulate intelligence a lesbian quality...
ouch...coral...
We're all judging her
We're all judging her intelligence by a couple of quotes. Hilarious.
www.myspace.com/emmahuntermusic
She was on The Real World...
it just seems...
Hey!
JBLuver you make a good point
I shouldn't be so quick to label her a bitch. It's really a result of her allowing herself to be typecast by the producers in that role. Bitchiness is a defense mechanism. I am sure that when she was first on MTV for Real World Back to New York, it was probably just a way to stem off the frightening concept that is "being portrayed on reality TV for all the world to see." But in subsequent shows she had to play up the character people were expecting. I really don't think she is as hard as she makes out, because I remember one of the challenges where Julie (the mormon) wanted to wrestle her, and Coral basically copped out and said if Julie touched her she'd have her kicked off the show. Her attitude is probably all a big front.
And yeah, I also find it funny that a lot of people have swarmed in and labelled her dumb because of the quotes that were picked out and the tone of the article.
Coral, is that chick!
Maybe I'm a gay man at heart but Coral is fabulous on like 18 different levels. Plus one now that I know that at the very least she's bisexual and proud. We totally need to get some apple tini's and hang out.
I Love Coral!
This interview isn't the best reflection of her, but it doesn't override the impression of her that I've developed after watching her on the Real World (and subsequent challenges) and reading about her hijinks on Melissa's blog.
I've said before that of all the people on the RW/RR, Coral is the one I'd mostly likely be friends with, if I met her in real life...and well...this explains that...though it might also have something to do with her willingness to get into fights with her fellow castmates that I'm not particularly fond of (*cough*Julie Stoffer*cough*). Whatever.
I hope she comes back and does future challenges (assuming her knee is better) because I think she can still kick the butt of what young chicks they throw in her way.
Coral is just snarky
Classic
"I don't wrestle, I beat bitches up."
YES!
and why does...
Please turn the sanctimony down 3 notches. It's not that serious
Clearly you don't know the context of the quote. Some crazy chick wanted to wrestle her. Wanted to be agressive with her. Her reply was "I don't wrestle I beat bitches up" In that sarcastic witty tone she has.
I must stop stanning for Coral like I'm getting paid.
i see differently
