"The Catherine Tate Show": I'm not bovvered!

You know how sometimes you can love something even though you don't always understand it? That's how I felt about the PBS show Alive From Off Center in the '80s, and that's how I feel about The Catherine Tate Show now. The half-hour comedy sketch show recently started airing on BBC America, and so far, I like it.

My favorite thus far is Lauren, the cheerleader who is "not bovvered." The rapid-fire "Yeah, but no" exchanges make me gape and giggle.

I also like Derek Faye, the effeminate heterosexual who takes umbrage when people think he's gay. His catchphrases are "How very dare you!" and "Who, dear? Me, dear? Gay, dear? No, dear!" (I referenced him in the L Word recap, so if you were wondering WTF I was talking about, watch this!)

Not everyone's laughing, though. A couple of years ago, a viewer filed a complaint with the BBC, claiming that the Derek sketches are homophobic. The complaint said that the character invites people to "laugh at the character's campness and 'obvious' gayness."

Um, well, yeah.

That's pretty much what the BBC said too, when they decided Derek "met the required editorial standards and did not demonstrate homophobia." They also noted that "Derek was an extreme stereotype of a gay man but humour is often based on stereotypes. The purpose of the sketches was to be funny, not realistic."

I'm not bovvered!

The Catherine Tate Show airs Fridays at 9:20 p.m. ET on BBC America.

    I LOVE Lauren

I am so glad you posted about Lauren and the oh-so-talented Catherine Tate. I found Lauren on youtube and was hooked. I just never could seem to find the show on BBC America at a decent time. I hope that has now changed- i'll run home and look tonight. "Am I Bovvered" was the #1 catch phrase in England in 2006 and Comic Relief (in England) even had Tony Blair saying it in a sketch.

I have a very good friend in England who sent me a talking Lauren Christmas Card and it is one of my prize possessions. I encourage anyone who reads this to go immediately to youtube and check out Catherine Tate and the Lauren Sketches. If you don't know the references sometimes the comments help you understand them and spending some time on wikipedia. Thanks for posting this!

    Huzzay & Huzzah!!

SO great to see Catherine Tate mentioned on After Ellen! She is fantastic and so talented!

I'm surprised that only ONE viewer complained about Derek though, normally the beeb gets them in droves. Obviously didn't insult too many of the British public (me included!) Hilarious!! We even rewrote a pantomime we performed recently to get the dame to say the immortal 'who dear, me dear, no dear?' line - and it got a huge amount of laughs from the audience!

For those of you who can't wait to see more, search for 'Catherine Tate' on youtube - the 'french teacher' sketch is brilliant!!

    Catherine Tate is brilliant !

Catherine is brilliant and Derek is a fab character. She had a Christmas Special on this year and i believe there were a few complaints about that too, due to too much swearing. It's very funny and glad to see you guys over in the US have the chance to see her show. Good for afterellen for profiling the show.

    "Are you gay, sir?"

    "No"

"But then are you a homophobic, sir?!"

    "No!"

    "Then you're gay, sir"

"Lauren, I have a wife and children!"

    "Are you a homophobic, sir?!!"

"You don't even know what a homophobic is!"

    "I don't need to, I'm not gay."

I looove Lauren.  Lovelovelove.  She's my comedy girlfriend.  I don't always love the other characters, but Lauren is kickass.

Oh, by the way, isn't the "yeah, but no, but yeah, but no" bit from Little Britain (Vicky Pollard)?

    "Bite me, alien boy!"

    Is the same thing?

Hello, I never had the chance to see this Catherine Tate Show, but reading what you´d post about it it seems very similar to one great British show called "Little Britain", starred by two amazing actors! They have one charachter that is called Daffyd Thomas, who complains about being the only gay in his little town  and he seems to want to keep it that way. And there´s Vicky Pollard, a problematic teenager who always uses the phrase "yeah but no, but yeah, but no, etc..." in her dialogues. If not, I recommend "Little Britain" for you all. Enjoy!

    Little Britain!

It's called DVD, and it's my best friend :)

    you're havin' a laff!

my favourite Catherine Tate character is the filthy-mouthed Nan - "what a faaaackin' liberty"!!  genius!
    Vik's picture

    What are you like!

Derek, really not gay? What on earth are you insinuating? ;)

[is this a spoiler? I don't know. I'm not familiar with proper spoiler etiquette! Here's a little warning gap, just in case.]

I thought he was closeted, because he has a male companion in some of the clips, if I remember correctly, by the name of 'Leonard Mincing'. In the one I remember, they're casting for a community play, and Derek gets a role that offends him horribly. He goes off on a rant, forces an apology from the play's director, and then says, come on, Leonard. And they both walk off in a huff.

     [End "spoiler."]

Nan's my favourite, the the cackling and the knee slapping and the shriek of "Faaaaaaaarking lib-er-ty!"

Also fun, the married couple that finds the most mundane things hilarious. "What am I like!" "What. Are. You. Like!"

    This show is catchphrase heaven!

    Nan

I definitely like Nan the best...some of the other characters kind of grate on me after awhile.

The "yeah but no but yeah but no.." is definitely Vicki Pollard on Little Britain, don't think it's been used on Catherine Tate's show. Also is Lauren really a cheerleader? I don't remember seeing her as one, I only remember another character with blonde hair and an American accent that I thought was one....hmm I'm not sure, I maybe haven't watched it closely enough, I'm usually just listening and doing other stuff at the same time.

    Catherine Tate

Catherine Tate is probably the top female comic here in the UK, and she had a prime slot on Christmas Day with her show this year (although it wasn't her best.)

Lauren and her "am I bovvered?" is a big favourite with a lot of people. As someone mentioned, her Comic Relief sketch with Tony Blair last year was a classic. However, Lauren fans saw her go over a waterfall in a canoe this Christmas! Has Lauren been killed off??!

Well Catherine Tate in the new companion on Doctor Who this year and has been doing quite a bit of straight acting, so I don't know if she's doing any more of her shows. If you haven't seen last Christmas' Doctor Who special, The Runaway Bride with her in, do look out for it. She's brilliant.

And no, Lauren is very definitely NOT a cheerleader. We don't have cheerleaders in the UK!

    nz 2 ca's picture

    Thought not.

Yeah I was pretty sure she wasn't a cheerleader, I just didn't want to get all bossy when I haven't watched every minute of the shows so couldn't be 100% sure but I'm glad you knew and said so.

    Cheerleader

Lauren does play a cheerleader in one episode though...i think its season 3 episode 2...her, her mate and Natalie Cassidy (sonia in Eastenders) all chant and dance to Hey Mickey. It was funny

    :)

    *shivers*

The idea of Lauren being a "cheerleader" chills me to my very core! ;-)

Oh and yes, it's Vicky Pollard of the wonderful Little Britain sketches that does the "yeah but no but" skits.

Lauren and Vicky DO share similar traits but their catchphrases are usually different enough to differentiate them clearly.

Did you guys know that Catherine Tate and friends 'did' Lauren on the Royal Variety show this year and she EVEN got away with shouting "are you disrespecting me?!" to THE QUEEN!!!!!

    Nice ;-)

yay! now i have another show to watch. it's been getting dull since the strike.

    cheerleader...

No, Lauren is not a cheerleader but there was one sketch where she was one and she batteled another cheerleader over Ryans attention (he was an american footballplayer). So yeah…

I don't know Ms. Catherine Tate but ...

I want to know who she is. Very funny lady. Geez, She has her own style yet she reminds me of my all time fav Lady comedian Ms. Tracey Ullman. Thanks  AE.com for introducing this lovely British comedian to American viewers. I will check out her show soon .

"yeah, but no" vs. "but I don't though"

I guess it wasn't "yeah, but no" but rather "no, but I don't though" and "yes, but you do though" -- I'm just talking about the one cheerleader sketch since that's all I've seen. The rapid-fire back-and-forth yes/no thing cracked me up.

Anyway. :) Whatever they say, it's funny!

Anyone remember Wild West a few years ago?

Catherine Tate and Dawn French played a couple living in a cornish village, Catherine tate was brilliant in it, but I think they only made two series.
