Cat Power and Tina Fey get some respect

Cat Power is officially the first woman to win the Shortlist Music Prize, which honors "acts who have made sterling albums but have not hit the mainstream." Finalists for this year's award included Regina Spektor and Joanna Newsom, while the judges included KT Tunstall. That's a lot of coolness in one paragraph; I need a moment.

This isn't Power's first nomination for the award, but it's her first win. If you ask me, any sort of recognition is long overdue. (Power's real name is Chan Marshall, by the way. And Chan is pronounced "Shawn." OK, I'm done with that.)

In celebration of her win, iTunes is featuring an exclusive Cat Power track, "Up and Gone." While you're there, download The Greatest (also on eMusic) — you won't be sorry.

Congratulations, Cat!

Meanwhile, last night, Tina Fey received a Made in New York award for her contributions to the entertainment industry. TVGuide.com took the opportunity to interview her. Here are my favorite bits:

TVGuide.com: What do you consider TV's worst affront to simulating New York City? Seinfeld's clean, sunbaked "Upper West Side" sidewalks?
Fey: No, Seinfeld is pretty realistic, I think. Friends is pretty insane, the apartment size and all .... Friends might be the most egregious.

Tina. I'm already ga-ga for you, but you just lobbed a vocabulary bomb at Friends. That is so hot, it's almost egregious.

TVGuide.com: What's more important to you, the funny or the story?
Fey: Well, the funny is more important, obviously, but I feel like our chance of survival will only be helped if we can get our story and our characters real enough that people care about them. If people don't care about the characters, they won't stick around.

Right on. And we care, Tina: We really, really care.

    The Greatest

I got Caty 'The Greatest' cd for Groundhog Day. I love Chan's voice every bit as much as Beth Orton's.

    Third thing I noticed

After how gorgeous she is and her great voice, is that she isn't wearing shoes. People that do little dances on stage without shoes are awesome in my book =).

    Cat Power

Don't know where I've been but I've never heard of her until now.  Just finished watching the YouTube video and I love her voice! I wish I found her sooner.  And she's pretty cute too especially the picture with the guitar.

    Tina

I like to think that Tina Fey was a librarian in a past life.

    Perfect.

That's so strange. As I was

That's so strange. As I was browsing through the internets, I saw Cat Power for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Who knew I'd be seeing her on AE soon after?

And well, what can be said about Tina Fey? Except, y'know. The usual praise and worship.

    Sounds like

Fiona Apple on that clip, but less heavy.

    I can't say enough about

I can't say enough about Chan Marshall and Tina Fey. As Cat Power, Chan seriously rocks my effin' socks. Her rendition of the Velvet Underground's "I Found A Reason" is terrific (it was in V for Vendetta and Saving Face). She definitely deserves her award, as does Tina.

    i completely agree with Suhrr...

chan marshall has always been brilliant, but her cover of "i found a reason" is downright incredible. finally she gets some recognition!

    Wonderful!

Some of us older folks will remember Toni Childs' voice.  Very similar.  Had to go dig out her CD.  I will definitely be listening to more Cat Power!

    Chan Marshall Rocks

I found Cat Power last year when I heard a song on a commercial that I really liked. So I looked up the artist and have been a fan ever since. Lived in Bars is one that hits a cord for me.

    Glad you guys found her!
