Nancy Botwin gets a new BFF on "Weeds"

The current season of Weeds disappointed me at first. I found myself longing for the innocence and quirk of seasons past. (BTW, to enhance that kind of long-term appreciation, you might try Kera Bolonik's new book In the Weeds. It's the best kind of companion book — reading it is like chatting with a fellow fan, albeit an extremely well-informed one.)

But with the demise of U-Turn (a particularly loathsome character, if you ask me) and the arrival of Brooke Smith, I'm back on the Weeds bandwagon. I've been a Smith fan for a long time, since The Silence of the Lambs and Vanya on 42nd Street. She's so ... steady. Intense. She can really hold a gaze or say a line in a way that makes it linger in the air for a while.

That's why it's pretty funny that she's playing someone rather unhinged on Weeds. [Warning: slight spoilers] Smith plays a DEA agent's widow, er, surviving ex-wife. Yes, the same DEA agent Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) was shagging. And now the other woman is very intrigued by the ex-wife. Waaayyy intrigued, to the point of stalking. The story line has only just begun, so who knows what will happen. But Weeds is great because it's actually complex enough to support a relationship like this: A strange, obsessive friendship that probably isn't going to turn into a disappointing lesbianish stunt. Here's hoping, anyway. Enjoy the clip, if not the grating background music:

Tune in for more Brooke Smith (and more Mary-Louise, of course) on Monday.

    Brooke Smith!

I don't watch Weeds, mostly b/c I don't have Showtime (much to my dismay), but I've heard wonderful things about it... I'm gonna have to check it out on DVD. I just wanted to show some Brooke Smith love - she was great in "Iron Jawed Angels" and "Grey's Anatomy". Mary Louis-Parker was a good reason to watch Weeds and now I have a second reason lol

    Love Weeds! hehehe

Oh, Nancy Nancy Nancy...you are never as slick as you think you are!  lol

Thanks for the link to the clip and the heads up about the show.  I don't have Showtime so I wait until the DVDs are out...so it is a bit spoilerish for me...but I don't care!

It gives me something to look forward to...like the Weeds vlogs here do!

    Mary Louise Parker's lesbian potential

WHY isnt anyone talking about the amazing potential for an awsome lesbian fling in this episode?!

during the stalking scene and the mamogram scene you couldn't find more lesbian chemistry if melissa etheridge tought chem 101 at an all girl school in the middle of san francisco... Or some other really gay city, i cant think of any right now, but you get the point im making, so why NO BUZZ???!?!!?!, WTF???!?!?!?!

    but that's what I liked

That's kinda what I meant -- despite the potential for a stunt and a lot of hype, I actually didn't think there was any kind of chemistry or lesbian vibe between them. You could read it that way, of course, but to me it just seemed like a fascination thing and the potential for friendship. Which I found even more impressive! :)

Yeah, I'm with you, Lady. That entire sequence was smoking. The subtext was enhanced by the scenes that bookended the Nancy/Valerie scenes and Modine's voiceover. Can't wait to see where this goes.

    Spoiler alert

I just think that when you are stalking someone you shouldn't let them put your breast in a vice.

    Sure, but...

It's a story they can tell others (a judge, mental health professionals) for the rest of their lives.

    Grey's Anatomy

I still think she should join Grey's Anatomy, fill in Burke's spot and have an affair with Cristina. But I suppose I should settle for Weeds. Mary-Louise makes everything seem gayer.

She was on Grey's in season

She was on Grey's in season 2 (maybe season 3 as well, but I don't remember...) playing Burke's "school rival" of sorts. She was fantastic on the show... I would love to see her character return.

Involved with Christina? Yes please *grin*

    the "vibe"

just watch the newest episode... i got the vibe. i'd quote something from it, but there's so much subtext that it'd be impossible to pick just one scene? ...or maybe i'm imagining things. anyone else seen the newest ep?

    Tonight's Episode

In tonight's episode, "the vibe" was too hard to ignore--they were virtually beating audiences over the head with it.

The scene where they're both laying outside on the patio...

    Andy: How drunk are we?

Nancy: We're not drunk, Andy, we're...

    Valerie: ...lubricated!

Yeah, kinda hard to ignore that.
