"Bionic Woman": Good promo, bad casting

This morning I watched the new promo for Bionic Woman. I was ready to rave about it. I was psyched. Michelle Ryan looks pretty badass, and there are even a few glimpses of Katee Sackhoff this time. She plays Jaime Sommers' nemesis, Sarah Corvus.

But then my glee vanished in a puff of bad casting: Isaiah Washington will appear in at least five episodes of the series as — oh, who cares who he'll play or what he'll do? It's bad enough that Travolta's probably going to ruin Hairspray for me, but now this? What's next: Bill O'Reilly as a guestbian? (Actually, that would be fun. Jenny leads the DTO in a rumble!)

Anyway, you may have the technology, NBC, but I doubt you can rebuild Washington's career. But I've already given him more virtual ink than I wanted to, so here's the new trailer. Grumble. I mean, uh, enjoy?

In other sucky Bionic casting news, it seems Mae Whitman is no longer on the show at all. You might know Whitman better as Ann Veal on Arrested Development. She was originally cast as Jaime Sommers' deaf sister, but it seems a muckety-muck at NBC didn't like the casting or the character in general.

Hmm, maybe that's all I should have said about the Washington thing in the first place: Him?

i could care less about isaiah washington.

frakin' KATEE SACKHOFF!!!! kicking butt and full of snark...just the way i like her...

    Oh yes,...

...she's the reason for my user name. I adore her in Battlestar Galatica.

And I'm a sci-fi nut, so it works for me.

    WOW

That promo has got me hooked.
It looks like its going to be great.

    Um

I don't think I'll even notice Isaiah Washington with all the hotness going on.  Because, Michelle Ryan: *Swoon*; Katee Sackhoff: *Double Swoon*.  I'm happy.  But it is sad about Anne.

    the action

the action looks unbelievable and real.  i'm watching!

sure, isaiah washington's a whiner and has been pulling the race card, but that ain't much of a deterrent.  i've always liked him.  so he's got a temper problem.  so he pulls out derogatory words when he engages in temperamental name-calling.  who doesn't?

plus, i like that he spells his first name with two "a"s, as opposed to isiah thomas, whose spelling of his first name just bothers me because, phonetically, it doesn't work.

    IW

I have no love for IW, but what can you (I) do. If TPTB at NBC and Bionic Woman are smart they'll have him playing some sort of super villian. Why not parlay all of the negative press and his feelings of being scapegoated into the sort of character who feels justified in being evil because somehow the world owes him and his mother didn't change his diaper often enough.

    Poop!

Who needs the movie, the trailer pretty much wrapped it up.  They should have ended it after her horror of looking at her legs in the hospital.  That would have hooked me.   (Reminiscent of seeing my legs after a hike in the woods, same scream.) I think you may be right Scribe.  It's a bummer.  But, then again, it's a remake, so what should we expect?  nada.

    HOLY GUACAMOLEE!!!!!!!

Damn I got so hooked on the promo I didnt even Blink once..Im watching this show for sure.
    boganville's picture

    Promo might've looked nice but...

I still wish they hadn't done a remake of this show at all. I've seen some re-runs of the original here and there, and a huge part of its charm was the kitschy 80s special effects. There's so many more new ideas that need exploration and a TV time slot! :p

Did anyone get a Buffy/Faith *cough rip-off cough* from that fight scene in the rain? I guess the one good thing to come out of this remake is that hopefully there will be a tonne of homoerotic subtext all around.

Also, is it just me, or did your crush on Lindsay Wagner made your brain neatly rewrite the title as "The Lesbionic Woman" each time you saw it? :)

    MsWoo's picture

    here here

I hate to see it remade. I loved the original and the bad effects were half the fun. I still remember how all the girls would play "Bionic Woman" in the playground every week after the show. We would "run" in slow motion and make that horrible little ch-ch-ch-ch sound as we pretended to jump.

And yes MAJOR crush on Lindsay Wagner! So much so that I would almost buy a sleep number bed.

    cylonangel's picture

    My first crush..

..was Lindsey Wagner and all of that ass-kicking she did just sealed the deal for me.

Now she's a hundred years old and selling "Sleep Number Beds".

Alas, I still love her. Maybe I can convince her we're the same "number"?

i wish they would let michelle ryan use her real accent, that would be hot lol

I was just about to make a comment on the accent as well.  It's a pretty good job - if I hadn't watched her on EE for so long I'd be convinced.  I'm with you though, her real accent would have been great. ;)

noooo don't let zoe slater speak!

there's a love of british accents and there's "you ain't my mutha", trust me on this one.

I'm a die hard fan of the Six Million Dollar man and The Bionic Woman therefore I'm kind of meh about this new show. Oh I'll watch, but I won't be happy about it. Does anyone remember when Sandra Bulloch was the new Bionic Woman back in the late 80s? Gotta love those TV Movies of the week!

    Wow...

im more than just a little bit disapointed that you all were so willing to overlook the casting of isaah just because theres "hotness on the show". i was really excited about the remake and was definately willing to give it a chance. when i heard earlier today that he was going to be in at least 5 episodes that did it for me. im all for forgiving and moving on but after he was let go on greys he went on this spree of blaming everything from his race to other actors. there is no way in heck he means a word of what hes saying and im not going to watch the bionic woman if they are going to choose to let him be a part of their show.

    NLL's picture

    She's too young

to play the part. The original bionic woman looked like a grown woman not a college sophomore. I'm sure if Charlie's Angels were cast today the average age of the three "women" would be 17 and half.
    wickedgrrl's picture

    *raises hand*

*points at self*  < Is nerd.  Just for the record.

The average age of the recast Angels in 2000 was 28.33 yrs old.  Thank you, Drew.  You rock.

I have no intention of giving Isaiah that much power.  He doesn't get to sway anything for me.  I think once I get past the premise of the show I'll probably enjoy it.  We shall see what kind of chemistry they either make on the show or don't.

    godsbedamned's picture

    I agree she's too young

While TV roles for female actors are improving, especially for women in their 40s, it seems like roles in action genres -- be they on TV or in film, where, across the board, they're scant -- are all calling for very young women and girls. Of course, this relates to the backlash that has been going on for the last 25 or so years. It's sad, and it's unrealistic. Something about seeing adult women has become profane in this society.
    Omega II's picture

    Devil's Advocate

Given the action nature of these shows, younger would give the show(if it makes it) longevity. Younger actresses would stay in there physical prime longer, and more likely to be more career driven(good ones anyway).

    Hmm

Looks interesting -- I don't mind the Galactica girl. "Ta da." I like. Ha-ha. I like this trend of powerful, kick ass, female action stars. Ex: Dark Angel, Pain Killer Jane, this show, Heros, the different crime female lead shows, -- looks good to me. :) -Rachel

    I don't care

I loved the original show ( I even had the Lindsay Wagner doll with the roll-up arm skin and the Bionic Woman board game) and I'm looking forward to this version as well.  Think of all the different things that could "roll-up" on a Michelle Ryan doll...

    wickedgrrl's picture

    Wow. Wow, indeed.

I just finally got a chance to watch the whole preview.  I'm a little nervous because I don't often get my hopes up for a show, but I think they just sored past my walls.  That was a great promo/trailer.  I hope it was really indicative of what the show will be.

I can already see the slash fiction emerging.  :P  The fight sequences totally made me think Buffy/Faith, for whom I obviously have a weak spot.

    Lindsay Wagner

The original Jaime Sommers was my very first little-girl crush.  I was absolutely hooked on that show as a young 'un.  I'm thinking the new show looks promising, but I have to say I was almost as disappointed to hear about I.W. being on it as I was to find out recently that the Bionic Woman playset I had was not, in fact, a secret Bionic laboratory as I had imagined, but the "Bionic Beauty Shop."  What the hell?  She was getting tune-ups in there, not having her hair done!

    Big Mistake NBC!

Back in 1979 when NBC had the orig. series they screwed it up royally by sticking it on Saturday nights at 8, back then a massive strong nite of tv, and the ratings suffered because of the day, instead of putting it back to it's orig. Wednesday at 8 ratings winning slot..then they just cancelled it without even giving it a move in time slot.

Did they really think we fans of the old show would forget that??not a chance idiots!

The new show looks like all the rest of the lame supposed ass kicking shows that come out..just as dumb , and with no heart or real feeling in the characters, beside that the casting is horrible..a brunette Jamie?? and a Brit at that>> give me a break...nothin against Brits, but Jamie is no Brit!

A friend told me the other day that Lindsay Wagner has just agreed to do some guest appearances on the show, and i was surprised, but that would be the only way i would watch...just to see her..and thats it..i have no interest in the show , and would much rather have liked to see Jennifer Aniston do the role like was first planned from the USA network.

Let me say this once ..all you kiddies out there listen up..no matter how cool you think this show looks..it is a total ripoff, the orig show was and is a classic, an no actress..NO ACTRESS will ever be better than LINDSAY WAGNER in this part!

The orig show was a huge hit because of Lindsay Wagner's down to earth real acting talents and the true human warmth she brought to the character..sure it was a simpler time..but this fast action tuff version lacks all the total charm that the fans of the orig loved so much an grew up with..when will TV and the networks ever get a clue that lame immitations will never work...

The worst of all is adding that creep Washington to the cast..that is a real joke!
